BlogHer SL ‘07: Combining blogging and Second Life

July 27, 2007 5:39 pm

‘Shoe up ass’

BlogHer 07: Queen Tureaud andBlogHer 07: Queen Tureaud (Queen Of Spain)The Second Life BlogHer conference started out in ‘Second Life Style’: everything went slick, except for leading lady Queen Tureaud having a bit of a shoe problem. Well, this is Second Life after all, and worse things then ’shoe up ass’ can happen.

Nice to meet you

BlogHer 07: Mygdala MarchThings got even more fun when Myg forced us to IMing all our fellow participants and reading all their profiles - for the ‘get to know your fellow avatar game’ - to fill up a notecard with ten avatar names. I admit. I cheated. But just a little bit. For the ‘name an avatar with over 5k inventory’, I listed Myg. Without asking her first. Just a wild guess. *grins* The question I got asked most was if I’m a furry. Whereupon I had to answer negative. Actuelly, there were no furries present. Well, I did add they could list me as a Neko. Ow, did I mention I won? =)

Combining Blogging and Second Life

BlogHer07: Combining Blogging and Second Life panelAnd then, the ‘Combining blogging and Second Life’ panel. What?! That early?!! *Panics* Yes. AM and PM are difficult when it involves 00’s and 12’s. Will all time zones use the 24 hours in a day time format starting today, please? SLCN.TV recorded the whole session so if you missed it, you can watch the re-runs. ;) And it seems Grace McDunnough can do more then just play great music, as she as some excellent notes from the session over at Phasing Grace.

BlogHer07: TheDiva Rockin and guyI’m sorry for the swinging my arms/swimming during the whole footage, but again - this is Second Life after all. Killing the AO, detaching my tail and ’stop all animations’ did not work. And with ‘no scripts’ enabled I could not use a scripted object to control my movements. Well, I was never good at sitting still anyway. ;)

WhyMommy Babii

I had a lot of positive comments in IM and met some more interesting avatars. Yet none of them could beat the ‘neat’ factor of this blogpost over at Toddler Planet:

BlogHer 07: WhyMommy BabiiThis is amazing. Although in reality, I am at home, in bed, in pain (and in my pajamas), I am still able to attend the BlogHer Conference virtually using this program called Second Life. They’re streaming audio this morning while the attendees sit in chairs. Soon we will get up and walk around and “talk” to each other, making connections and renewing friendships that we’ve made through blogging. …

If you see this lady on the grid - her SL name is WhyMommy Babii - don’t hesitate to talk to her! And, see! Second Life isn’t there just for SLex and gambling.

Millions of Us give away land: SL Blogland?

4:37 pm

All the talks about SL Blogland up to now? Maybe this is not such a bad solution: Millions of Us is supplying land on eight sims (Past, Present, Future, Tunes, Biz, Film, Style and Playground) for those with interesting ideas. SL Bloggers, maybe we can put together some good ideas, and try for some land to experiment with importing RSS into Second Life, Flickr API’s, in-world browsers like the SLbrowser, … .

Let’s put our heads avatars and RSS feeds together and come up with a cunning proposal and get ourself an in-world SL Bloggers headquarters? Zoe? Veyron? Dinee? DesertWolf? Bella? Dalien? Kris? Myg? Wrath? Tiana? Shockwave? Timothy? Nadine? Loki? Dolmere? Tobie? Chloe? …? Anybody thinks this is a good idea?

From the Millions of Us blog:

Social media is all about participation, right? In that spirit, Millions of Us will be opening up land on several of its sims in order to host the coolest projects you can come up with. We own 8 perimeter sims, clustered around the central eponymous sim — and that’s where we invite interested and motivated residents to help us fill those sims with fantastic Second Life content.

Each sim has a thematic name, clockwise from left are Past, Present, Future, Tunes, Biz, Film, Style and Playground. What we’re looking for:

  • A proposal from a single person or a team which fits the theme of a perimeter sim
  • The proposal should detail the concept, a timeline for building and construction and promotional plans
  • The proposal should be a concept that generally benefits the Second Life community, but commercial projects with content and items for sale are OK — if you sell things on our land, you can keep the money.
  • Your project should provide an idea of how you might continue with your concept beyond an initial build. It is critical that your proposal include ongoing programming as opposed to a one-off build.
  • Proposals should be emailed to celebrity@millionsofus.com
  • There’s no hard deadline for submissions — we will continue to evaluate ideas as they are proposed to us and we have space available to house the project.

What you get:

  • An appropriately sized land parcel at absolutely no cost to you for a 3 month term, renewable at our discretion for up to 12 months.Typically we expect each parcel will be approximately 4000 square meters. But if your idea needs 10,000 square meters, we’re still willing to consider the idea. Don’t be afraid to think boldly. We love vision and boldness.

Blogher SL ‘07: Thursday Night Mixer

4:34 am

BlogHer 07: WhyMommy BabiiBlogHer 07: Grace McDunnoughThe first SL BlogHer event has passed and it was good: great music, a lot of familiar avies and names, not to much lag and an IM OD. I got to meet the lady behind Second Sex, Lillie Yifu. It was my first time hearing Dalien playing live in Second Life - wow - and also Grace McDunnough I didn’t hear before. Wow, too! Great song choice with ‘Here comes the rain again’ and even greater ‘Hey, look, I can sing!’ statement with ‘Dear Mr. President’.

BlogHer 07: Sarina Janus and unknown avieTheQueen forced us all to wear our BlogHer tags, and after some acting difficult of mine - ‘I do prefer my Propaganda Mistress tag!!!’ - I got the Mistress Speaker tag. *grins* So behold for that one.

So: lot’s of interesting people there, awesome music, neat dance partner… It was a great starting party!

BlogHer 07: Dalien TalbotThe only complaint I have, is that the whole hyperstring.net region is no script and no rez. Thus no (functioning) guns! Now, tell me, an ‘SL bloggers event’ without guns?!! Now that aign’t right!

I’m sure Myg - who is doing the ‘Meet your avatar’ welcome session at 7 AM SLT today - agrees with me on that one. What better way to get to know eachother then to point a gun at eachother and test defense? Maybe we should search for a battle zone… :p

BlogHer 07: Malburns WriterFor more pictures of last night, see my BlogHer SL ‘07 Flickr Set or the BlogHer SL ‘07 Flickr pool. For the program for today - I will surely be there at 8.44PM SLT -, see the SL schedule.

And for those who aren’t able to get there. Metaversed’ 57 Miles will podcast the SL sessions.

BlogHer 2007 Second Life kicks off (my) tonight

July 26, 2007 9:17 am

BlogHer Second Life 2007: Texas TimTamblogherI did the VOIP soundcheck with Texas Timtam today and 1. I actually sort of know what I’m doing now with X-lite and 2. it worked! :p

And yes, that delay they always talk about when streaming sound into Second Life is really there and horrible.

Anyway, I should be all set for the Combining Blogging and Second Life panel. That is, if PC & laptop do not die on me, my internet connection doesn’t fail and I succeed at returning from the party on time/staying awake. ;)

But first, for my tonight this evening we get some great music and a party:

6:00PM CST / 4:00PM SLT / 1:00AM CET
Thursday Night mixer
Various artists perform to kick off BlogHer in Second Life 07 at Hyperstring.net Island including Dalien Talbot (Red: W00000t!!! :p), Grace McDunnough and Montian Gilruth.

Second Life Walkie Talkie Walks

8:13 am

second life walkie talkie walk - sander veenhofOn September 13th the ‘Second Life Walkie Talkie Walks‘ mixed reality project by Dutch artist Sander Veenhof will take place in Brooklyn, NY. SLwalkietalkie is a part of the Conflux Festival 2007.

This is not Sander Veenhof’s first project involving mixed reality and Second Life, as there were already the avatar trap and a way to meet your SL avatar.

I wonder, are they going to rebuild a Brooklyn in SL for this? Or which ‘blocks’ are we talking about?

A simultaneous walking tour for Second Life avatars and real people, connected to each other using a pair of walkie talkies. One operating from Second Life, the other running on an internet enabled mobile phone. Connect to a Second Life avatar and make a simultaneous walk in both real life and the virtual world, using a specially developed pair of walkie talkie devices.

Second Life residents can pick up an in-world walkie talkie at the 0031 area in Second Life. A list of currently activated walkie talkies being carried around can be found on the mobile version of the site.

second life walkie talkie walks - sander veenhofThe list of walkie talkies can be browsed on a mobile phone to select a walking companion. First agree on a duration and a direction for the walk. One block? Two blocks? Five blocks? Clockwise or not? Coffee break included? Choose one of the suggested photographic tasks, and start walking. Keep in touch by by typing on and ‘listening’ to your walkie talkie. Be curious.

Avatars are requested not to fly, but to keep a NY pace. People are requested not to fly either.

Photo assignments will vary from “Spot the ultimate virtual sight” to “Show what’s even better than reality”. After finishing your walk and having fulfilled your photo task, both of you submit your digital snapshots to the the project website by email or upload. Optionally, you might have agreed on a title for the walk? The received pictures will be united and shown side by side in a gallery of simultaneous walks.

SLaddiction

7:27 am

Yes. / Euh? Huh? / Yes. / Yes. As breakfast is usually merged with lunch. / No way! / No. After evening bath: yes. / Yes / Yes / Yes / Yes. See evening bath. / No. Arrived late: yes. / No. / No. / No. / Dunno. Still waiting for my first rezzday. / Probably. / No

Which makes me think I might need to update the ‘you know you are addicted to SL when…‘ list.

You know you’re addicted to Second Life…

  • When you point out camping area’s at a brand boot at a real life festival. (As in campers, not as in ‘tent and sleep’.)
  • When you can’t have sex without the appropriate poseballs. (Zoe Connolly)
  • When you walk up to a woman and ask her where she bought her great skin. (Tiessa Montgolfier)
  • When you are constantly frustrated at not being able to zoom and rotate on firefox, your TV, in your backyard, while driving… (Alexander Burgess)
  • When you refer to your clothes wardrobe as your inventory. (Shockwave Plasma)
  • When you wonder why there are no furries on the streets. (Shockwave Plasma)
  • When you are surprised your genitals don’t detach. (Shockwave Plasma)
  • When you walk into a good friend and say /hug (persons name) and waits still she/he accept. (Bloodhex)
  • When you say ao off when you gonna sit on the dinertable. (Bloodhex)
  • When you start to use alt+0 and alt+8 as zoom commands in Photoshop. (Chloe Streeter)
  • When you constantly threaten to shoot people. In First Life.
  • When you complain about the lag in a traffic jam. (Max Malick)
  • When you almost think of de-rezzing your car at the mall when you can’t find a parking space. (Stellaarbandid)
  • When you stop buying art supplies. (Siyu Suen)
  • When you accidently tell someone in real life that you have to go and rez dinner now. (Phoenixa Sol)
  • When you mistake a hungover blurriness for textures Z-fighting each other. (Kisa Naumova)
  • When you refer to changing clothes in First Life as ‘editing appearance’. (Gislain Knibber)
  • … ?

Voila. Done.

Casino’s outlawed, Topgol reliefed, SL economy endangered?

5:40 am

sl business opportunities (screenshot from secondlife.com)I won’t miss the games - Baccarat, Blackjack, Craps, Faro, Keno, Pachinko, Pai Goi, Poker, Roulette, Sib Bo, Slots and others -, as I never played them in SL anyway. It will be ackward though, stepping into a club and seeing no money sploders. But shall I miss the channel 0 spam those things were causing? Nah.

So with the gambling gone, the casino’s will disappear too and Topgol shall be lag free with less lag again? Woot! Strange though, I would protest when LL would outlaw pr0n (or what they think of as pr0n) and become SL would become all PG but I feel indifferent and even a bit reliefed about casino’s being finally closed down?

And the SLeconomy?

Lestat over at VTOR points to the most interesting part of all this: what will happen with the land prices and linden dollar now the casino’s can not return any money to the owners anymore. There is no need for them to keep this land and L$, as they do not get a return out of it anymore. So lot’s of land and Linden Dollars for sale in the near future? Making both land prices and the Lindex drop? Second Life economy’s going into regression? Or will the (ex) casino owners find other means to make money from those assets?

Business Opportunities?

And as TD Goodlife notes: Linden Labs - consequent in communication as ever - still lists ‘casino operater’ as one of the business opportunities on secondlife.com.

OnRez is rezzed

1:15 am

Aha. It’s there. Finally. I was already that curious by now. Honestly, after a first quick glance, I must say that I expected ‘more’. Things to do for me:

  • Update items to add the category and department that have mysteriously disappeard on all my items. Oh, I pity the ones with +100 items listed! No ’swimwear’ category anymore? Then where do I put bikini’s? (done)
  • Confirm that I’m mature. (done)
  • Find a ‘this are the main differences between SLboutique.com and onrez.com’ page or blogpost. The short ’slboutique’ FAQ doesn’t really cut it, imho.
  • Find a ‘this functionality we added’ page or blogpost.
  • Check if they changed anything in their policy.
  • Check out what the in-world vendors exactly are, do and offer.
  • Find out why I’m not listed in the Seller’s List between Vindi Vindaloo and and Vinyl Candour. Nvm. I think I should start highlighting ‘quick glance. *blush*
  • See if they have improved Selling Reports: can I now see reports for individual items over the last month? Or see which one sold (gave away) best? Etc.
  • Complain that I want customisation options for my webshop. Tagline, banner, order of the items, … . You know, the usual. Ok. Sometimes I should just keep my mouth/keyboard. My mistake. Although. It was fairly well hidden? ;)
  • Consider changing all links on this blog to items on slboutique.com as they now only refer to OnRez.com and not to the correct item there.

And this is my shop at OnRez (which strangely enough shows no items found) (which works half of the time). Did you fetch your pair of free Pink Neko Eyes with Paw (links to individual items do work) yet?

Photography Contest: Second Life Foto.com

12:35 am

Aha. Another SL photography contest that I failed to notice in time: SLfoto.com contest at secondlife.foto.com. From Foto.com to support their inworld presence at Foto.com, Riviera (211, 41, 26). During the summer they will have 8 photography contests which each last a week with each a 10k l$ price.

Feel free to ‘battle me’ there (submit a photo) or to vote for me. Don’t feel obliged to do the latter, though. I don’t really believe in unregistered web based voting on SL photographs anymore. *cynical grin*

Foto.com organizes a summer photo contest in Second Life from July 9th 2007 to September 2nd 2007. Second Life residents are invited to send us their favourite landscapes or avatars pictures. All pictures which respect the submissions requirements below are displayed on the SL Foto Contest weblog and are submitted to the visitors’ votes.

Each week the author of the top ranked picture will be granted a Linden $ 10,000 prize, a printed album of his work and a 100 free photos development package on Foto.com to print his/her Second Life pictures.

After the last week of contest, Foto.com will hold a special event in-world to exhibit the 8 weekly winners’ artworks (date to be determined).

Ow, and they even thought of having a .pdf SL photo guide written by Yann Mip.

Second Life web resources for July 25th 2007

July 25, 2007 4:30 pm
  1. Game Operators Receive Anti-Addiction System Warnings - Metaversed - The system itself involves limiting users to three hours of play per day, or five hours in the case of people over 18 who have registered real names and ID cards with the system and are willing to be monitored.
  2. Clickable Culture - Playboy Pulls Out of Second Life? - By the sounds of it, Playboy’s beer-goggles wore off, it discovered who it was sleeping with, and snuck out the door before dawn. The problem is that the brand left its pants behind.
  3. THiNC SL - THiNC Printing Press - The THiNC Printing Press v2.0 works in conjunction with the THiNC Book 2.0 (which is required) where you can publish your very own book to give out or even sell.
