in-world browser or html on a prim (do I need to spell that out? ;))

August 31, 2007 1:52 pm

OpenSim + genius + dedication - nipples = in-world browser aka html on a prim. (And frankly, I must say, they picked a great test subject. ;))

opensim - in-world browser

opensim - in-world browser

It does not seem to like .gif’s, so I suggest we try to accomodate and switch to .png? =)

(Fineprints: html => texture => prim. But still. =d)

Nipplegate activism clothing (freebie)

7:29 am

Well, after this post I did some thinking: I do really want to go Burning Life. But how to do that when I can not walk around with nipples in the PG areas. So I removed them from my breasts completely. It was a bit painfull, and I’m not sure it’s healing well, but at least I won’t offend anybody at Burning Life. *grins*

The whole package is copy, trans and the tat’s are full mod and you can fetch it from SLexchange for free or from somebody who has already gotten it from me in-world (Laetizia, Dandellion, …). There’s one standing at the entrance of my skybox too. Have fun! ;)

Philo Sion, f*ck u!

August 30, 2007 4:13 pm

Today, I’ve send a friendly instant message to Philo Sion, asking about a way I could get permission to use the skin I bought from Hybrids for personal use only on OpenSim:

Hello. I hope this reaches you. I had a question for you, if I could take my skin out of SL to opensim for personal use. I’d love to chat or mail or so for a moment if it’s possible. Greetz, Vint Falken

This is the reply (one and only) I got:

[14:53] Philo Sion: No you can’t, that’s against TOS and is considered stealing.

Geeh. I know it’s against ToS. I know it is considered stealing. Would I have been asking otherwise? But I also know it’s not that hard to do - be it with or without permission of the creator. I don’t get it. If I had any dishonest intentions, I would not have asked. So if I’m willing to ask her and to figure out a way that it is legally correct - which probably would have ment paying her the amount she asks for custom skins or so - and she can’t be just a bit friendly? She just mainly tells me to sod off?! The human in me says: ‘Well, next time I don’t ask and just do. F*ck you!’. The Neko in me just wants to fire some guns at a certain lady and then rip the texture. Dead people don’t complain about copyright violations. =d

Gosh. I now wish I had chosen another manufacturer then Hybrids when I first decided to ‘try the Neko thingie’. *sobs* (And yes, now I also have a tag ‘SL assholes’.)

The Irony: Nipplegate SL

The Irony: Nipplegate SL

Iridium Linden to Gavin Leigh:

Or perhaps you can make the breast without so much detail.

I wonder if someone ever said that Botticelli when looking at his ‘Venus’. Or about Michelangelo’s David. The latter - with private parts rather exposed - is to been seen on a very public, PG sim in Firenze. Teachers take their students there to see it. Parents take their kids there. Two nipples and a dick. On the market square, in Firenze. And we can’t even have artistic, statue-nipples on a grid where everybody is over 18?!

I agree with Laetizia and Dandellion on this one:

I demand an official apology on the Second Life blog, containing the words overzealous, overstepped, clear and boundary. I demand that the statue be allowed to stand on the intended spot, in her full nude glory, with a notecard giver next to it to give out the full text of said blog.

Although I would rephrase it a bit to: ‘For once dear Lindens, admit you have fucked up!’ How on the grid earth do you expect business people to take us, the residents of Second Life, serious if you think we can’t even handle seeing an exposed nipple? *scratches behind her ears*

Update: VintLabs just released some freebie Nipplegate activism clothing. ;)

SLart at the Cannery opening - Woot!

4:18 am

Cannery: October Hush*Tries to TP to the Cannery* Could not teleport?! Wtf? Full sim! W00t! When I get in, it will be partytime! And so we did. I was so glad to hear the many ‘Wow! Great!’, ‘Love this sim!’ and ‘Awesome photographs!’s. I got to hug Shoshana and scream ‘We did it!’. I’ve met a lot of people from Flickr I did not see before. *Waves at Katharina Malthus amongst others.* I also took advantage of the evening to leave the (Flickr) ‘contact’ status I had with some avatars behind me and to move on to what hopefully will become a long lasting friendship. *Waves at Sofia London, Arteer Oliva and Claudia Mantis.*

Nephie’s tunes were great as ever at the SLart at the Cannery opening, dancing animations were fluent and SLart was everpresent. Not only because of the photographs, but also because of the time and effort people put in their avatar looks, their clothing and even their conversation. I said my ‘thank you!!!’s to a lot of persons that helped me by creating, previewing and reviewing, listening to my rants, etc. but I did not get to talk to them all. Still that many to thank. And not at least the participating photographers!

Cannery: Pach VoomStrangely enough, for a Second Life photography event, a lot of people started talking to me about the blogpost I made on open sim. When I’m on SL and you want to test the Ruth OpenSim, feel free to IM me, and we can go together. =) I’ve set up my ‘crash container’ on the Rezzable Cannery sim, and will probably use it as a temporary home location. Looks a whole lot more cosy now I’ve put in a wall from my skybox, no? :d

Cannery: Vint's hide-out (ft. Gany)This afternoon (tonight) at 1 PM SLT (22h CET) we - RightAsRain and I - will be giving a guided tour on the Cannery grounds to the metaTravellers, so if you’re interested, feel free to join in. We’ll meet at the Cannery landing point at 1pm SLT sharp. If it will be a ‘voiced’ or ‘typed’ tour, that will depend on what the ‘tourees’ want, but my preference goes out to the first, as I did already a lot of typing passed days. =)

Rik Riel - ricomatic.com - wrote what I consider the most interesting review on SLart at the Cannery up to now - not just re-chewing the press release, but actually doing some thinking - titled ‘The Cannery Art Gallery: merging Web2.0 and virtual world communities‘ on how a Flickr community could grow out of Second Life photography and how then again that Flickr community organises something as big as SLart at the Cannery in-world. Worth a read (and comment)!

But enough said, as they claim a snapshot says more than a thousand words, check out the SLart at the Cannery Flickr Pool. My personal favorite for the evening is from Stephen Venkman :

WindLight: Reflection ON the water, not under.

1:38 am

Jeska Linden shows us WindLight:

WindLight sunset by Jeska Linden

Yeah yeah, clouds were already reflected in shiny surfaces. But the trees? And the avie and mountains? All reflected in the water without having to look under water? =d Woot! *jumps in the air* *makes a salto* *lands and says: ‘Great, now give me my toy back!’*

And then Torley Linden mentions on his Project page that we’ll be able to change the map for the ‘ripples’ of the water. Woot! again:

adjusting ripple water values custom ripple water settings

Expect seeing water that says ‘Vint Falken’ as soon as WindLight is in FirstLook again. :) The only thing I fear for, is that with better skies and overall lightning, the Second Life photographers that spend as much time on a photograph in Photoshop as they do in-world - me amongst others -, are out of jobs. Are we safe until they start working on avatar appearance and all objects too? Or should I consider starting a SLescort business anyway? ;)

From Veyron Supercharge:

Anyhow, as promised…. I give to Vint Falken, one gift certificate of appreciation. Lifelong modeling slave for whatever the bearer needs, wearing whatever (or less) the photographer needs. I can’t thank her enough. When I have the new blog up, I think you’ll all like the look of it.

I like Veyron. But when she goes through the hassle of creating something goodlooking for me using Powerpoint(!!!) and says such nice things, I like her even more. Just look at that cute blogpost title ‘Vint, my Heroine’. *grins and puts ego slider a bit more to the right* I wonder: ‘lifelong modeling slave’, does that mean I can rent her out now? ;)

SLart at the Cannery Wear and Cannery varia

11:01 am

*Looks at the clock* 4 hours until big opening party. Woot! *looks at to do list* What sound do stressed kitties make again? :d

Cannery Wear: UnisexI’ve redone my SLart at the Cannery Wear clothing textures for the males, this time minding lenght, shadow and color. I like how they turned out. Actually I like them that much that I even prefer to wear those over the female tops. So I’ve labeled them ‘UniSex’. 4 in a box, all textures on a shirt as well as jacket layer, for the male fashionistas - if those exist, that is. So Smiley, how do you want yours delivered? Launching a rocket over grid borders? ;)

Cannery: Foolish FrostIf all goes well, my sleeping bag is being spread out on Cannery grounds as we speak I type. Not being very sure if I’ll still be able to TP back to the Paradise Lost after this night’s party, I decided it was better to prepare for me spending the night on the sim. So I’ve squatted a container and Foolish Frost promised me a sleeping bag to keep me warm at night. I still need to work on the luxury a bit though and add some other stuff to my temporary home, as I’ll probably camp there more often when I’m tired tired to TP home.

Cannery: Big Fish catches Something Smelly (rightasrain rimbaud)We all know - or should know - I’m not the most patient kitty on the grid, so when the boss was awayish just when I needed him to answer some questions, I decided to have some fun. Lack of wool made me do this: ‘Big Fish’ catches ‘Something Fishy’. Good advice: never leave your avie unattended when I’m nervous. *grins*

And the thing I am looking forward to the most? The moment Shoshana will come online, teleports into the Rezzable Cannery sim and I can hug her and scream ‘We did it!’. That amongst others. =d

PS. Yes I tend to rant at such exciting times.

My first visit to OpenSim

4:11 am

Now, if a dear friend gets a new place, you go to visit, right? If a hawt dear friend gets a whole (open) sim, you surely drop by, no? So last night, I logged in on Dalien Talbot’s Ruth. Maybe it was the late hour, or maybe it was my looks there, but I felt that noobish. And TestA User and Dalien chatting away using a terminology that is ‘far over my head’ didn’t help to that either. But as exploring new things is fun, I had a blast anyway. And the noobish look even caused some feelings of nostalgia.

Until somebody else proves I’m not intitled to this one, I claim to be the first (really) female user on OpenSim. =d It seems Nadine Nozaki as well as Dandellion Kimban have beaten me to it. *sobs* And for those who want to skip the travel report and connect to OpenSim Ruth themselves, driving directions in human language at the bottom of this blogpost! ;)

OpenSim Ruth: underwater reflectionConcerning the looks, the first thing I did was uploading a decent top texture. Rejeanne did not look that bad together with the red pants, but after a while I felt like I needed a more sexy pair of pants too. The standard skin for females is ok-ish, but I do think the guys (and girls/ruths) can use some more clothing and (hawt male) skins. So dear designers, if you have some old textures lying around, or freebie textures, please talk to the guys. That way if you ever go to opensim, at least you’ll have something decent to wear. As far my shape, Vint Falken is a self created shape, so I need to write down my slider values in Second Life, so I can adjust those next time I go to Ruth. I’ll also drop the people at Hybrids a note to ask if I may have my skin to export, if it’s for personal use on OpenSim only. (Update: Got a very non-positive reaction from Hybrids’ Philo Sion on that question.) Yes, there are other means to do that, but I prefer the legal, friendly way. ;)

OpenSim Ruth: SunsetI think I’ll be hanging out more on Ruth, especially if I want to test my clothing textures. The 3D preview programs I use at the moment let you only preview the textures on a standard sized avie. If I upload them to OpenSim - for the neat upload fee of -1L$ - I can test them on all different kind of sliders values in peace. (That is, if I ignore the guys and their terminology in main chat. ;))

The plywood in OpenSim is strange. It’s reddish and less plywoodish. *grins* It was shocking to notice how much confusion I felt when rezzing a new cube and seeing it appear, more red tinted and more classic looking then our modern, cheap looking plywood. It felt like a disturbance in routine.

OpenSim Ruth: Sitting on mountainAs I already knew, terraforming is fun, although the project ‘write Vint’s name in the sand’ was quickly abandonned. I ended up with only a small mountain. Which was a good resting spot though.

It was neat to see how my avatar instantly decided to assume sitting pose on the mountain. I wonder if it would do the same in Second Life. As for as I recall, I always fall off mountains there.

OpenSim Ruth: No physics

As physics is not enabled on Ruth, I was unable to push someone. At all. You just walk through the person or the object. Strange thing, but it does make things look funny from time to time.

For instance, if two users rezz in exactly the same beginning spot, it seems like Ganesha just entered the open sim. :p

And last but not least, I was able to pose the familiar question: ‘does my butt look normal to you?’ They might not have prim shoes to end up in your ass (yet), but Dalien’s client took care of the necessary SLoddity to feel right at home.

OpenSim Ruth: SLoddity (aka 'Edit my butt')If you want to try Ruth out for yourself, and test the OpenSim, Testa User to Testz User are available for your exploration pleasures. This is how you do it:

  • If you have a shortcut to the Second Life client on your desktop, copy it and name it ‘Second Life OpenSim Ruth’. If not, create one.
  • Right click it and look at it it’s properties. Normally under ‘Target’ it says: “C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe” -set SystemLanguage en-us. Just add -loginuri http://ruth.petitbe.be:9000/ to the end of it, so you get “C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe” -set SystemLanguage en-us -loginuri http://ruth.petitbe.be:9000/.
  • Use that shortcut to open the Second Life client. You should automatically connect to Ruth. As user name you can choose from Testa User up to Testz User, and the pass for all is ‘test’.

If you see any Vint Falken running around, you can assume safely that’s me, so say ‘hi’. ;)

Zion - run by me (Dalien Talbot). Should be not too laggy (well, minus bugs, if they are there) - good server not doing much more than just opensim, and fast connectivity. At the moment no physics to keep it more stable. Loginuri: http://ruth.petitbe.be:9000/; usernames: “Testa User” through “Testz User”, password “test” .
