From the sweatshop: SLart at the Cannery Tshirts.

August 28, 2007 2:50 pm

Making Tshirts in SL is easy, right? There are dozens of tutorials about how to do it right. Yet, today, I do not refer to Photoshop with my prefered, loving nickname for it ‘PS’, but as ’sweatshop’. Why so? Well, for starters, it crashed on me twice. Of course we regularely save our work. Not. And then there is the frustration of adding all sorts of detail to your clothing, although you know it will only show up half because of small textures. Pfff.

SLart at the Cannery Tshirts: you better heart Vint! ;)For girly Tshirts there is always the problem of the ‘what do I put on the front’. It’s almost impossible to put any text on the front side, because even if you take into account the breasts mesh, there’s no way to know which size and shape of breasts the avatars will have. So no text there. Some fishes then? We all seem to love fishes lately, so why not. =)

And then, what do I put on the back? No artwork, as somebody else is already doing that. So what’s typically about the cannery? Fish! And SLartists! Because although SLartists and RLartists have a lot in common - creativity, passion, a certain view upon the world - they do differ, if only because the worlds they represent differ. And a free ‘I <heart> Vint’. *grins* I hope people will see the humor of that, and will not think I’ve put the ego slider to the max. =)

(And then I did not mention the hassle of uploading all textures, creating the shirts, labelling, wearing them for the ad, creating the ad, … . I pity people who do mass Tshirt production in Second Life.)

SLart at the Cannery Tshirts: washed to hotAnd if you already thought girly Tshirts were a pain, here come the gent’s. Now I know why they are that hard to dress. I knew about the short tshirt layer and actually needing to use the jacket layer. But I did not realise it would be this bad. Looks like the wrong washing machine program was used. Several times.

Shading is hard compared to girlie tops - upper part of breasts shiny, belower part more dark - too. Now, I want the tshirts to be tight. But how tight? And how can I know if the avie wearing the tshirt will have washboard abs or just plum pudding? And - of course - going for the abs, how do I shade such things? And how do I do the breasts without letting them look like lady’s breasts. And maybe the washed out yellow is a bit to un-manly too. But the smiling shark is neat, no?

Anyway, I think the male version will need some more work tomorrow - or shrunken Tshirts should become fashionable again overnight. And sadly enough, I think neither male or female version beats my ‘Rejeanne’ top in quality. And now I’m a bit afraid that top turning out that good was just ‘luck’. *sobs*

Second Life web resources for August 26th 2007

August 26, 2007 4:30 pm
  1. The ‘Nicholaz Edition’ of the Second Life Browser: Linux Version of 18i - SL client, Nicholaz Edition for Linux. No more info needed. ;) Ow. And Nicholaz Beresford got the ‘contributor of the year’ title over at SLCC. Duh! Totally deserved recognition. =)
  2. GigaOM A First-Hand Look at a Chinese Second Life - HiPiHi - Xu told me he is working with Creative Commons China to create a CC-licensing system for user creations in time for HiPiHi’s commercial launch.
  3. Brace Yourself: Italian IBMers to Strike in Second Life Next Month - Your2ndPlace - Meta-strike. IBM employees organise a virtual strike in Second Life. The author is right when he points out that is a ‘digital world first’ IBM did not plan.
  4. Reuters/Second Life - Exclusive: Philip Rosedale interview from SLCC - LL shall eventually open their grid to privat sims connections and sharing a fee. That’s what I understand of it. Woot?!

Second Life is the Garden of Eden: W00t!

August 25, 2007 4:27 pm

Religious Self (Part 1)Our love for online gaming reveals to us our inherent longing for the Garden. Virtual worlds imitate the purity of life before the Fall by pretending to remove the immediate consequences of sin. However, we must remember we will not find an ideal world apart from the crucifixion. The cross guarantees for us a coming new world removed of every hint of sin. (Rom 8:18-30) In the meantime, everything we touch will continue to be affected by sin–even it is by the click of a mouse.

I responded on both posts. Couldn’t help myself. I don’t think it will pass moderation, so here we go:

LMAO.

“Our love for online gaming reveals to us our inherent longing for the Garden.”

Let me see, we have SLex. Most are not very happy with gambling being abolished. I’m not in there for God’s sake, but for mine. It’s a world without limits, especially no ‘moral’ ones. You can experiment to your liking, be it with gender or with scripting or with social interaction, or with design, or with lack of gravity or with…

Those virtual worlds are about creativity, exploring - others and yourself -, creating, sharing, experiencing, … but, luckily, not about God.

We have Linden Gods, not Christian Gods. We don’t need Him. Really. Please! I think he has still a mess to clean up in First Life, before He starts to interfere in Second.

If Second Life were the Garden of Eden, Eve would have never been kicked out. She would be making RL money out of it though. =d

Edit multiple object’s properties at once: can it be done?

4:02 pm

What I had to do:

[In my inventory, one by one, click object (or texture), right click, ‘properties’, click ‘mod’, click ‘copy’, close properties.]x56. Which totals at 336 clicks. Auwch!

What I wanted to do:

In my inventory, click first object, alt+shift last object, right click selection, ‘properties’, click ‘mod’, click ‘copy’, close properties. Which would total at 7 clicks.

Why can’t I? What did I miss? Or is there really no way around doing a lot of clicking, in Second Life?

PS. I did find out that it takes waaaay long to edit objects if they are inside another object. Change modify. Waaaaaiiit. Change  copy. Waaaaaaiiittt. Open properties for next one. So inventory was the smartest move. But still… there must be another way?

SLart at the Cannery: Invitation

Slash Quit Slash

August 24, 2007 11:06 am

Let us hope this official anounce will mean the end of using the slash at live music performances in Second Life, so that Dolmere can finally find peace of mind. For those to lazy to even click: in the Client Menu go to Debug Settings and set ‘PlayTypingAnim’ to False to stop the typing animation and typing sound when you type in main chat. Is there also a ‘PlaySnapshottingAnim’ option?

I find myself asking two questions after this blogpost:

  1. What grid problems are we facing tomorrow - or right now - as you call in Torley to colorfully distract us?
  2. Debug Menu settings, all fun, but when do we get WindLight back?

It’s just that the next best thing RenderGlow = True really really really confuses my graphics card. Find the flaws:

Rezzable's Cannery ft. RenderGlow is True: Hangar

Rezzable's Cannery ft. RenderGlow is True: Roof View

PS. Although I have ‘local lights’ enabled in my graphics preferences, RenderLight = True still makes a difference. *confused Neko scratching behind her ears*

SLart at the Cannery: just didn’t make it.

4:06 am

I’ve complained a lot to in-world friends - and even did some complaining to outer-world friends - that it’s *insert swearword* hard to decide on which pictures to display if you can only pick a total of 20. I wanted to show an overview of Second Life. I wanted to not disappoint anyone. I wanted to make sure we’d let all great artists participate. I wanted to keep the themes consistent. I wanted no fuss about ‘you didn’t choose my picture because you dislike me’. I wanted to choose photographs not only I, but a majority of Second Life residents would appreciate. Shortly put: I probably wanted to much.

And yes, we have put a great collection that is representative for SL photography. And yes, we have a lot of kick ass artist’s participating in the exhibition. And yes, I’m sure about the choices I’ve made. Yet I feel bad about not finding a way to include the following pictures, as they ‘rocked my SL world’ too. So, trying to make up for it a bit, these photographs were ‘in the running’ until the last minutes before uploading and certainly deserve an honorary mentioning:

(*click* the pictures to go to their Flickr page)

Andromega Volare - Last GuestAndromega Volare’s ‘Last Guest’: Taken at the Van Gogh pub, it has a tremendious feeling of lonelyness over it. The cold blue color certainly helps to that. Makes me wonder, if we are alone in this virtual world, or is it just like first life: despite the large friendlist, we need time for ourselves, to think. Because, despite the abandoned feeling of the place, the pose is not that ’sad’ is it?

Loki Popinjay - Reflections‘Even Avatars once in a while feel blue.’ Yes, we do. That and we import ‘the owner’s’ bad mood from time to time. Again the need for isolement, to contemplate from time to time, even in the virtual world that Second Life is. Meta-booze, someone? Self portrait by Loki Popinjay titled ‘Reflections’.

Foxy Lady by Shoshana Epsilon shows a cute - and almost sexy - female from one of Second Life’s most spoken about race: the Furries. If you look at this two beauties - both the foxxy lady and the photograph - wouldn’t you reconsider any prejudgements agains the Furries?

Looker Lumet - RockstarWinner of the RockStar contest, Julitcha strikes a daring and self certain pose. Taken by Looker Lumet, this photograph sure has a rock attitude and stays intersting because of the spots deviding the picture in half. It screams out ‘I’m having a great time’ without loosing it’s dreamy feeling. SL life music kicks ass! ;)

Decor Disaster - Rob Danton (Flickr.com)Not really a viewer trick, but more the SL viewer or client playing tricks on us. All the bugs we complain about, sometimes lead to great photographs and even can serve as inspiration for design, clothing, … . The original way to handle SL bugs - not whining about the deco disaster, but making the best out of it -, strong pose and the ‘My Linden Gods, why me’ feeling is why I love this photograph by Rob Danton.

Kean Kelly - Testing WindLight vol3Kean Kelly’s Windlight vol 3 is impressive as well. Constantly testing and experiencing is one of the things ‘typical’ for Second Life, and we all have our hopes up that high for the return of WindLight. Combine that feeling of experimenting with a great composition and lovely color scheme and you get a photograph that ‘has it all’.

Tober - October HushThe selfportraits ‘Tober’ and ‘I think I took the wrong pill‘ by October Hush are great examples of the effects you can achieve using alt+0 and alt+9 in combination with good post processing. Yet, that talented Neko lady had pictures I liked even more. ;)

Aaargh! Cannery, AdSense, 2k comments and spam

7:39 am
  • Very busy working on the website for SLart at the Cannery, thus neglecting vintfalken.com for a day. ;) PS. I’ll never claim WP makes an excellent CMS again! :p)
  • Gave AdSense a second change, although planning on trying this ‘let users hide ads’ thingie out. With a CTR of 0.54% I think I might as well not have ads, though. =) Like, you’re all to smart to click those things? Damned! ;)
  • Spam is annoying me and probably causes me to smoke two extra cigarettes a day. Askimet - although doing a good job - can’t handle everything, so the comments on vintfalken.com switch to ‘moderated’. Don’t worry, comments from people who previously commented on this blog should get through without a problem - if not containing any urls. But new visitors will have to wait a while for their comment to be approved and to appear.
  • VintFalken.com has reached over 2k comments now. *applauds to self* Trying to arrange a date for an in-world photoshoot with the lovely lady that made comment n° 2000. And no, it does not count the spam.
