Extinction for Second Life Dinosaurs?

February 25, 2008 6:31 pm

Rezzable's Dinosaurs

THE DINOSAUR TIMES
Special Edition
ARE WE TO BE EXTINCT?

Panic arises at Rezzable’s Dino sim as more and more dinosaurs wearing apocalyptic sandwich boards are spotted. Rumours about the ‘Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event’ were already overall present, but now fear is starting to take over. Can’t you feel something is about to happen’, whispers Mr. T. Rex.

Do those fears make sense? Is the end of the Mesozic near, and the Cenozoic upcoming? We asked Mr. Brontosaurus, renowned professor and head dino of the Dino-sim’s metrological & astrological department: ‘Were a week ago we still had doubts, there now is nothing but a striking certainty that on Thursday, February 28th an UFO - Unidentified Flying Object - is going to collide with our precious sim’, says Mr. Brontosaurus. Softly he adds: ‘And no, no solution or way to stop this from happening is found as up to now’.

The UFO - or flying saucer - is rumoured to be the type of spaceship the Greenies are known to use, but official sources are refusing to acknowledge this, and are saying that they are still trying to contact the spaceship’s crew. They do admit that since yesterday, they are sure it’s not just an asteroid, that’s moving at high speed towards us. In an unofficial interview, President Stechosaurus said she was not panicking, but suggest to bury all unhatched eggs to guarantee the survival of our species.

Evacuating plans are taking form, but we need to urgently invent oil refinery before those can happen. In the mean while, humans, neko’s and other species are gathering on the nearby sims to watch this disaster taking place and to machinima it.

I can understand. There’s nothing much they can do about this. We’re on our own here, hoping we can arrange contact with the ship’, says President Stechosaurus.

The Inside Scoop & SL Bloggers Meet tonight

February 24, 2008 3:13 pm

Yeey, I made it on the Inside Scoop! A brief notion, but still… =d *bows to Wrath* At the end he reminds us all of the monthly SL Blogmeet that’s planned for to(euro)night and is hosted by the lovely GoSpeed Racer. See you to(euro)night or this (US)afternoon at Sailer’s Cove? (I’ll be a bit - fashionably - late, though.)

Who’s attending? And will we be able to fit the whole SL Blogosphere on a single sim? ;)

Learning Chinese in Second Life

February 23, 2008 5:57 pm

3jLife: Learning Chinese in Second Life3jLife - now this is how the Chinese get in Second Life? - does not only provide Second Life accounts, an L$ exchange service and a Chinese SL community, no together with 3immersions, an SL developing company, they also offer to teach you Mandarin Chinese using Second Life as a virtual classroom. The classes take place in-world on regular times and class notes are even provided if you would - wish to, or be obliged to - skip a lesson.

If I wanted to attempt learning Chinese, this would be great. As for now, I’m just glad they don’t teach English. ;)

Linden Calling - The Lyrics

February 22, 2008 3:15 pm

Ak Yip at SLrank watch set the tone with these ‘Linden Calling’ lyrics:

Linden calling to the faraway SIMs
Now that regulation is declared-and VAT come down

Linden calling to the virtual world
Come out of the Real Life, all you boys and girls

Mind that I fall in? Let’s pretend I can write lyrics and sing. *grins*

Linden calling, now don’t look at WoW
World of Warcraft has bitten the dust
Linden calling, see we ain’t got no lag
‘cept for on popular sims, but please, let me brag!

CHORUS
The metaverse is coming, alt+0 is zooming in
Meltdown expected, the scaling is growing thin
Clients stop running, but I have no fear
Cause Linden is drowning, but if needed we’ll find a way to out of here!

Still 3 verses left for those who want to give butchering the Clash’s lyrics for London Calling a try themselves!

SL2MV - Moving from Second Life to Multiverse

February 20, 2008 10:14 pm

It’s not that I want to encourage anybody to do so - although having two virtual worlds can do no harm? - but this is one of the things that are ‘way beyond my cup of tea but highly fascinating to watch’. I suggest you IM Mike Sutton’s avie Lightninboy Snook with any questions. =p

What does SL2MV - short for Second Life to Multiverse Content Pipeline - do?

  1. Set of integrated programs to take static 3D Models from Second Life to Multiverse
  2. Creates DAE Model that can be imported into most 3D Modeling tools (3D Max, Maya, Blender)
  3. Creates OGRE 3D Mesh and Material Files for Multiverse
  4. Creates Texture Files
  5. Imports mesh, materials and textures into Multiverse World listed in Repository

And what do you need?

  1. Linden llScript
  2. DOS Batch Files
  3. GL Intercept by Damian Trebilco
  4. Modified Open GL Extractor (OGLE) by Eyebeam OpenLab
  5. 2 Python scripts using the Blender API
  6. 4 AUtoHotkey Keyboard Macros
  7. Multiverse Conversion Tool
  8. Multivese Asset Importer

And just from Second Life to Blender:

Fashion, virtual and RL side by side

6:26 pm

I know. This is not a fashion blog. Yet three things I could not ‘not mention‘:

  1. There is a real life ‘Virtual Fashion’ summit upcoming for June 2008: The Virtual Fashion Summit is a real-life event meant to bring together virtual fashion designers, texture artists, prim sculptors, committed virtual fashion watchers and shoppers for a weekend in June 2008. Read more at virtualfashionsummit.com. Why does that have to be on the other side of the ocean again? :( And anybody submitting papers? Or will mention the primskirtbuilder?
  2. At 11.30 AM SLT on the 25th of February 2008, the Ewing Fashion Agency and the Amsterdam-based real-world talent managers, The Artist Advice will hold a simultaneous real-world and Second Life fashion show called First Fusion. The show in Amsterdam will be held at the uber fashionable De Balie on the world-famous Leidseplein, where as the Second Life event will take place on the sim of the event’s premiere sponsor, First Meta. SL designers participating: Nicky Ree, Aphrodite Outlander , Sysy Chapman and EFA Design Awards finalist, Indira Bekkers. I’m a bit sceptical about the sponsor - First Meta, an SL credit card company - but besides that, lovely initiative, and I can’t wait to see footage. I wonder if the SL show will be streamed in-world and vice versa.
  3. Bernadette Duponchel was recently at the National Retail Federation conference with the rest of her team, presenting IBM’s take on virtual worlds for the fashion design industry. This is the second consecutive year IBM has demonstrated the use of virtual worlds at the NRF. The brief demo highlights the benefits of real-time collaborative design, short feedback loops when tweaking materials and costs, and even pre-selling the item before it is physically manufactured. AO notecard missing from database: Advice needed

6:13 pm

aargI have a ZHAO AO and wanted to add some more - feminine - poses. Guess what happened? Right, when trying to edit the notecard inside that determines which poses the AO chooses from, I get a ‘notecard missing from database’. So there the notecard is, in the AO, but I just can’t open it/see what’s in it anymore.

Strangely enough, the ZHAO still functions as it should, reading the information from exact that notecard that is so-called missing from database, as it still displays the poses I’ve listed in the notecard. If I’m trying to access the copy of the notecard I have in my inventory, it gives the same ‘missing from database’ error message.

Me is now highly confused and wonders:

  • If somebody knows how I can still find out what was written in my poses notecard. So I can copy paste that, make the necessary changes and insert it in my ZHAO again.
  • Will I be able to delete the current notecard(s), if it’s missing from database?
  • If someone can hand me a copy of their ZHAO notecards, so I can see how things were to be written again.

Update: Takuan and his alts are experiencing the exact same problem. Anybody else? Take a quick peep into your AO’s (right click, edit, last tab) and try to open the notecards to see if they are still there/allocated right?

RL to Flickr to in-world Greenies TV

4:00 pm

greenies interceptsI did not believe they could pull this off - being just cute green extraterrestrials - but look, with some help from Miss LittleToe the Greenies, they did as promised: mobile phone or computer to e-mail to Flickr stream to in-world Second Life Greenie TV. Yeah, some minor bugs - the media stream did not always cooperate and 8MB photographs were not always well received - but beside those everything went great.

I had a great time at the Pyjama party with things as ‘the weirdest thing in your fridge‘ photo hunt, Miss Gwen’s butt blocking the remote control button and toe socks. Must do again soon! :d

New voice features? London.. euh… Linden calling.

1:48 pm

Belgacom Telco in Second LifeAmerica’s Network writes about telecommunication companies in Second Life, and throws this in: According to Informationweek (dec 2007), Linden Lab is working on upgrades for the voice communications feature it added in August 2007 that will allow avatars to get their own SL number and receive voice calls from real-world phones sometime in Q1 2008. Voicemail is included.

Getting our own country code sounds nifty, no? What else will we get according to ‘Joe Linden’?

  1. Standalone desktop client for chat.
  2. Voice support for Linux. (Should be here already?)
  3. The ability to get real-world phone numbers assigned to our avatars and corresponding voice mail.
  4. New controls for group chat: group owners can moderate, silencing a few or all avatars if needed.
  5. Voice fonts’, to thoroughly and neatly transform your voice if wanted.

I assume n°3 and n°5 will be ‘paid for services’. So the logical questions follows, would you pay for this? I hardly ever use the real life phone with persons that also have Skype - well, not when both of us are at home - and everybody says my tutorial-voice is cute so I shouldn’t go changing that one either? ;)
