10 Ways Online Gaming Will Change The Future
March 24, 2008 6:00 pm‘It was only a matter of time. Humans got fed up with this world, and so we invented a new one. I suspect some theologian will come forward in the future to suggest that, in fact, our world was created in the same way. The gods got sick of their boring spiritual realm and made a more exciting, physical one to replace it.‘ says David Wong on ‘A World Of Warcraft World‘. (Don’t get instantly fed up, it’s a humour site after all! ;))
Where Mr. Wong takes World of Warcraft as an example for the future of online gaming and virtual world, a lot of his funny statements are dead on target and are proven true also when you adjust them to be a bit more SLish. We would get this:
For his arguments to these statements, go and read Mr. Wong’s blogpost, have a chuckle and give his ideas a few thoughts. Please! ;)

After the fear first kicked in and then the non-discussion started somewhat here on Wired Faerie’s Inventory System Changes - Take 2 and also a bit here where I listed Katarina’s outline I decided to check out Cala’s link. Jopsy Pendragon build a - simple - in-world 3D representation of how the whole Second Life server thingie works. I did not learn much new - although I never imagined asset servers would be pink and contain that much missing textures - but it’s cute to look at.
Funny thing is, that when visiting Teal, Loki Popinjay was there too. Great minds think rezz alike? ;)
Update: Dandellion has an opinion too! Go and be prosperous read. ;)

Update:
- Backup in place.
- Updated WP Install.
- Most blogposts and comments back in place.
If anything - besides your lunch - acts up,
please, let me know!
When I was enjoying good company and a movie, my plugins and WP pages seem to have gone on a holiday: I fixed a lot of the damage by re-activating the plugins, but the pages, well they are still gone. I hope to fix that tomorrow. (Happy Easter, grmbl.) This for now leaves me with an only partly functioning blog, a lot of content lost and the song ‘Die Computer Verlassen Die Welt’ stuck in my head. So we have a new temporary 404 message: Enjoy it, while it lasts. Did I say *grmbl* already? And what caused this to happen? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Changed a lot of passwords, though. Just to be sure.

Second Life web resources for March 20th 2008 through March 22nd 2008
March 22, 2008 8:07 pm- LL screws its users silently, yet again. on Flickr - Katarina Malthus, points to the ‘Additional internal web service infrastructure work to remove dependencies on central databases (initially disabled, weâll then slowly start flipping services on) ‘ sentence on LL’s latest blogpost. Not good news? :(
- Arahan’s photographs decorating the in-world LL recruiting center - In doubt? No, it’s really Arahan Claveau! (See the pink hair.) Woot! ;)
- Weekend Knack blog - BBC documentaire ‘Virtual Love’ op Koppen - Dutch ‘opinion’ blogpost on the BBC Documentary ‘Virtual Love’ that recently was displayed on Belgium TV. Conclusion: It does not paint a very realistic image of Second Life, or relationships in our virtual world.

Now we all know about TheSixtyOne.com’s Second Life community it’s time to look at who’s on there, how they are ‘received’ by the average human 61 users and the best… which amazing in-world live music schedule has sprung out of this.
Linkage to SL artists on the 61:
Dolmere Talamasca has written out a nice overview of all Second Life artists currently on TheSixtyOne.com, including links to their profiles. If you are a member of The 61 and did not hear yet of the organised 61 bump bombs to encourage and support SL artists, I suggest you IM him and say ‘Hi. I want to bump!’ If you are not a member yet, and want to join, I kindly suggest you list me as a referrer. That way, I automatically subscribe to you - seeing what music you like and what you think worthy of bumping - and I get more points to bump SL artists. Well, frankly, I bump any song I like. Latest giddy discovery: Miranda Rensch - I like making Faces.
Second Life avatars, whatyathink?
Apparently, not all what is 61 ‘diggs’ Second Life avatars on ‘their’ website. On MaxBumps for instance, they think ‘What do you think of Second Life Avatars for musicians and users?’ is one of the 10 things you should really know about your fellow 61′ers. *sighs* Some funny, stupid and enervating responses to that question after the break.
*****************************************
100th 61 Bump Bomp Party starting today at 8 AM
*****************************************
Some of the highly insightful reactions of fellow 61′ers:
I don’t think about them very much - I find the variety of avatars on t61 fun and interesting, so too much of any one kind gets boring. I mean, if three dozen people chose adorable hedgepigs as their avatars, that’d get boring too, no matter how adorable they were. OK, maybe four dozen. (Iyzie)
Is that what those avatars are? I had no idea. I guess they’re alright. It kind of takes the humanity out of the interaction aspect of the site, but then again if it wasn’t Second Life avatars, it would be random pictures, so I guess as long as they feel it portrays their personalities, it works for me. (KeithWarrensEa…)
Those avatars inspired me to make a podcast dedicated to their work. Apparently T61 has a pretty large group of Second Life players … and who am I to judge? I’ve got the artistic abilities of a doorstop. (PuntSpeedChunk…)
The whole Second Life concept creeps me out personally, but people can pick whatever avatars they want. (Shayborg)
Now, really does this need to be an issue? Off to the interesting part… PARTYING! ;)
61 Bump Group and Get It Together Party
Today there is an enormous and amazing musical line up dedicated to ‘The 61 Bump Group’ and the ‘Get it Together’ song. The ‘Get it Together’ song? That’s a musical cooperation between different artists to raise awaress about the splendid work some of the free in-world musical locations are doing. A sort of ‘thank you, for getting us heard’:
Get It Together is a collaborative recording created by musicians who regularly stream live shows into SL. Conceived and written by UK singer songwriter Djai Skjellerup the recording features the talents of the following musicians; Toby Lancaster, Zak Claxton, Norris Shepherd, BabbleGrabble Swindlehurst, Rich Desoto, Jambalaya Fonck, Lyn Carlberg, Kim Seifert, Jean Munro, the Professor, Freestar Tammas and Mimi Carpenter. To be freely distributed throughout all live music venues and other sites in SL, the purpose of Get It Together is to raise the awareness of live music amoungst SL residents.
Update: listen to the song here.
But I’m sure you will find out all about it - and get a listen - at the party location, which is at Bree Berke’s ‘Nitida Ridge’.
The Party Schedule for today:
08.00am Kourosh Eusebio
09.00am Beth Odets (FishFryBingo on 61)

10.30am Leslee McCarey
11.00am Neil Morrison (Spinning Mule on 61)

Get It Together Launch Party Artist Schedule

1.30pm Rich Desoto (Rich Palmer on 61)
2.00pm Lyn Carlberg
2.30pm Mimi Carpenter
3.00pm Kim Seifert (Kim Robben/Seifert on 61)
3.30pm Djai Skjellerup and Toby Lancaster
4.00pm Premiere of “Get It Together”
4.30pm the Professor
5.00pm Von Johin
6.00pm Closing act (A special three way relay event! Mimi Carpenter will be live at Nitida Ridge for the 61 bump party with a special mid-set treat. Mimi will be joined by her bandmates Dolmere Talamasca and Max Kleene. As an added bonus Dol will remain at his show on SoHo island and Max will remain at his show at the Bellagio. All three audiences on all three separate sims will be able to listen in to this special relaycast event!)
Photographs with this blogpost are of Dolmere Talamasca performing at the Second Life Relay for Life event. It has cost me dearly - 5k l$ donated to SLRFL - but he said it… twice! And there was even an unsollicited added ‘… and neko’ part. Yeey! :D

Myrl - Social Networking over Virtual World Borders
March 21, 2008 1:15 pmAfter a very, very, very long beta period*, Myrl has hatched. Tagline? ‘Connecting worlds’. Malheuresement it does not connect the virtual worlds, but rather their inhabitans. Myrl indeed offers social networking abilities for Avatars / Residents, from ‘Second Life’, ‘There’, ‘All’ and ‘Cross Worlds’ but so do Facebook, MSN, SLProfiles, Koinup, Ning… . But probably on Myrl, no annoying humans who want to share the last photograph of their - assumed cute - kids with us. Yeey! ;)
What I found to be most interesting about the Myrl concept, where you ‘Myrl’ someone or something if you want to vote for it, is that the amount of Myrls you get to give out depends on your Karma. And that Karma also takes in-world time in account to determine your authority. ‘Life scrobbler: how much time you’ve spent inworld (60 mins=6 points).‘ The ‘leverage’ it has is minimal, of course participating on Myrl is still the most important, but still, it’s an interesting concept. Because, probably, those who spend the most world in-time are the best people to judge what or who is hot, interesting, … ? *goes to find an attachment spot to attach the Myrl button*
Social networking facilities are most closely to Ning’s, with an added function that you can rate - ‘Myrl’ - everything from persons over groups to events and businesses:
- Sort to show all or just from ‘Second Life’, ‘There’ or ‘Cross Worlds’.
- The ability to tag everything. (And thus also easily browse by tags.)
- Room for groups and organisations.
- The ability to submit an event, place, business, news (to your blog), image or video.
Will I use it? A lot? Honestly, I don’t think so. I already blog on vintfalken.com, I post my photographs to Flickr and/or Koinup, I have my feedreader to keep track of SLnews and avatar friends to send me event invites and even more news. So, let me link my Myrl blog to VintFalken.com’s RSS feed, read my photographs from my Flickr account, … and I might consider being a bit more active.
But most important reason why I don’t feel comfortable on Myrl yet? I feel lonely there. I would invite some friends over, if only I could find the ’send out invitations’ button. You know, the probably most important button on a social networking site? That button that gets them people, because they either want to be first, or after a while, just want to blend in with the crowd? I haven’t localized that one yet. I hope - for their sakes - they have one and I just overlooked.
* Yikes. Nvm that. Still in private beta mode. *Blushes incredibly hard*

Working for Rezzable…
March 20, 2008 4:00 pm… is definitely diverse!
One moment, you’re freezing your - pretty - virtual ass off at Cascade…
… next thing you know, you find out your soft, sensitive white skin is not the best one to wear at the Surfline sims…
… only to end up at a staff meeting where company hierarchy reorganisations are taking place…
. ;)

- Unmassed - Challenges for Any New Linden Lab CEO - Joel Greenberg lists what he thinks a any new Linden Lab CEO should definitively take care off. Good read. =)
- Digital Urban: Import Any Model into Second Life: AC3D - Importing models into Second Life is still for various reasons a difficult task - the people from http://www.inivis.com/ however have just made it a whole lot easier with their plugin for AC3D.
- Supercharged by Veyron - De-Ruthing Trick - Title says it all. What’s great, is is that easy that I could sum it up here. Of course, it would take the use of linking to it away, so I’m not going to tell… ;)

Copybot 2.0 … Myth, Rumour or Reality?
March 19, 2008 4:58 pmCopybot 2.0, a myth?
Copybot 2.0 is what all designers fear: one click only, and the ‘thief’ has their content, ready to re-sell. It’s the worst case scenario they can think off. It’s a copybot that has no limits. Not even those imposed by the nature of Second Life.
It’s the fact that ‘copybots’ can’t be avoided without giving up freedom. And that some kind of theft will always be there, how many freedom we sacrifice:
Chris on a Town Hall talk with Philip, 2006 (comment 110):
The current gen CopyBot works by pretending to be a client and listening to what the server sends it. The server sends it prims and textures so it can display them for a user. Instead, it creates and uploads identical prims and textures of its own. As far as the server is concerned it is a builder who just built something.
Assume LL goes full scale lock down. They tell LSL to get stuffed, forget about open source, change the protocol, and encrypt the data path via SSL or something like it. This prevents copybot from connecting and makes reverse engineering difficult as you can’t just listen to the data on the wire.
Okay, so now you have copybot 2.0. It reads the prim / texture data directly out of SecondLife.exe’s memory (remember, it’s YOUR computer).
LL responds by randomizing the locations of stored data.
Copybot 3.0 sits between the program and the graphics card and listens to what the card is being told to draw. From that it tries to extrapolate the prims (although this is harder) but still gets the textures. It can’t connect to SL directly so it posts the data to a web page and a companion script in-game uses RPC or http to get the data and build accordingly.
Copybot 2.0, a rumour?
Rumours all over the gird that Copybot 2.0 has been released. People enabled ‘no-build’ to stop them (not that that works, a CopyBot just needs to sit around) and I have received numerous IM’s saying that ‘it’ is there. Only nobody could say more than ‘I heard Copybot 2.0 is out’. Until…
Copybot 2.0, a reality?
Until I talked to someone I do trust on this. No sources here either, though. But I got:
- A ‘functionality’ list for Copybot 2.0. And yeah, it is what all designers fear.
- The news +-20 avatars were already banned for use of Copybot 2.0 by Linden and their inventories and L$ balances were confiscated.
I trust the guy. I really do. Yet I can’t be 100% sure. But if this is true, I’m anxious to hear Linden Lab on this. And some people who have more rumours maybe? Two uncertainties added together don’t make one certainty for sure, but it might take some of my doubts away.
