Age Verficiation - Did you?
August 9, 2008 11:54 am
Despite all the buzz within the Second Life Community and blogosphere when first announced, we haven’t heard from the Linden Department of Age Verification for ages. Not since Robin Linden’s last post on it 6 months ago. Oh yes, there a few minor ‘mentionings’ on blog.secondlife.com, but all refer to client or server side code changes related to Age Verification, no big news. No news, actually. Hmmm. Was Age Verification not the predicted success after all? Or was it never a ‘high goal’, just something Lindens thought they would need to counter ‘ya’ll ar korruptin ma kids’ fanatics: ‘But look, sir, m’am, Second Life has Age Verification in place. No way your kid can access content that would seriously traumatize him or her!
What happened to Age Verficiation?! Dandellion asked this already in May, and I’m going to repeat the questions. I would have assumed some details on age verification amounts and percentages in the last metrics post, but no. None what-so-e-vah. I would like to know though, how much residents are ‘age verified’ and which percentage of the sims need you to be age verifiable before you can get in? I think the latter number can’t be high, as I’ve never been stopped from entering a sim or parcel by banlines - which don’t work all to well - for not having ‘age verification details on file’. But could be I don’t frequent the right (or wrong, depends on how you look at it ;)) places in our Brave New Virtual World, so I would like to hear from you. Did you Age Verify yourself? And did you encounter sims that are locked for those who didn’t already? Please, satisfy my curiosity! ;)

Actually, when it came out first time around, I did age verify. But I can no longer remember what the process was like, if it was a beta, an alpha or what.
But I remember registering as an 86 year old woman from Kazakhstan, this from an internet cafe in a small Eastern European country.
It did seem to work, as I received a confirmation that I was now age verified. The confirmation arrived to a disposable yahoo mail addy, though, so I can’t go back and check. :)
ROTFWL. You’re serious?!! Awesome. Can I call you ‘Granny’ starting today? :d
It also seem that some Californian driving licenses available by Google image search worked too. At east for a while.
Only time I saw ban lines was on the edge of that experimental 16sqm parcel that was to prove one can do almost anything through that fence.
And no, I am not going to verify.
Granny.. LOL Hmmmm.. I need to make me a new avie.
Maybe that can be seen as a statement in teh ongoing discussion about realistic avatars. (I assume realistic meaning they correlate to you. In this case I would have an avie that looks realistic, but not exaxtly like me, I’d say).

I age verified with my drivers license on the SL site when they had the option to. It doesn’t bother me to give that sort of information, but it’s obvious that verification like that isn’t going to accomplish anything as it’s easy to fake.
I also got age verified.
But considering the success rate of age verification with Europeans - I’ll leave it to you to decide whether it was a proper verification or not.
I have not age verified, believing that asking for the information they apparently require is probably an illegal act in my country. I’m waiting to see what happens.
i refuse to verify until they give me an option which doesn’t require my social security number. i cannot use the drivers license option since our license numbers in my state the the same as our social security numbers.
I am age verified with my real data. Guess most of us Europeans did it. However it has come to my knowledge that Under Age Abuse Reports on non-verified residents are being used by people who want to be mean to someone. Those ARs have priority at LL and the residents have their accounts suspended and a time limit to prove they are over 18 by sending copies of their documents (not only the numbers) to a fax number provided by LL.
This happened to 2 friends of mine, one of which owns 6 sims and is inworld for 2 years now.
[…] main change to the code was the implementation of age verification which, as Dandelion and others have pointed out, was seemingly abandoned as quickly as it was […]
I did, sort of age verify, well my alt did, just show them my Drivers Licence, I promice Im the vampire after Tupac in RL. I promise….
