Arahan Claveau on Channel4.com

March 21, 2007 4:09 pm

Arahan Claveau / Steve MillerW00t, ‘our’ Arahan Claveau - those on Flickr will definitely know him - got mentioned on Channel4.com’s microsite about SecondLife.

And silly me was thinking Steve Miller was nothing but a hawt cyborg showing off his cute butt whilst pretending to be a gay gangster that is constantly snapshotting good looking girls in nazi uniforms, if he’s not - totally undressed - taking us to all sorts of interesting places on the grid.

Mr Claveau, could you please give us the SLurl to the ‘Sick Cat’ installation? Somehow Channel4 links are rather messed up. (Just tried, not working in IE either.)

Ok, the Sick Cat installation is old news and demolished, but a new one arrised and it’s called ‘the Super Fun Happy Club’. Do check it out.

Yes Arahan, I speak that fluently, if I may say so myself! *grins*

I’m probably missing the whole point if I say I love that cute pink bunny hupping around in the installation? :D

To Encore:

Sorry te be rude, but reading such inane comments about such a courageous and dedicated artist makes me see Red.

It exactly confirms that Arahan did NOT make his point here, at least not in your head. The fact that you escape your reality into a vitual bubble and isolate in your skybox to have sex with your perfect boyfriend does not make neither RL or SL better, more livable places.

Intolerance, bigotry, ostracism, homophobia, sexism, are all things that still exists in game or out game. What SL suffers the most, IMOHO, is being filled with people that are completely apathetic, like you are. Yes we all need a break, sometimes. Believe me, I do too. But you were not forced to see his installation, nor forced to do such disgraceful and insensitive comments about his efforts to cope with homophobia.

If I were not polite I would tell you to go and shove your head in the sand(box). Peace and quiet seems awfully linked to ignorance, apathy and disrespect nowdays.

*looks up bigotry and ostracism* (Really. Serious. Not being native English speaking has it’s disadvantages.) *Looks up the quote too.*

To Vint:

bigotry = fanaticism
ostracism = general discriminatory behaviour

the quote is from the song Seeing Red from the hardcore punk american band Minor Threat:

Oh Codie!

Thank you for that.

I never spoke to that person before so their rudeness was a bit of a surprise. There will always be a “point” to make as long as prejudice and intolerance are alive and kicking. ’super fun happy club’ is 600 metres in the sky in a mature sim, hardly in peoples faces, I could put it down at ground level if I wanted to, my last installation was in the sky to purely because lag is less of an issue .

Fortunately, individual residents are not responsible for what we can and cannot see or do in SL, not everyone uses it in the same way. Diversity and freedom are extremely important to keep this vibrant virtual world alive and prevent it from turning into a sanitised celebration of mediocrity.

aside from code’s “out there” miss as it regards my comments it seems as if we are referring to two distinctly separate installations, arahan. (i’m sorry if you agree with code that my comments were rude. i just thought since i saw you referenced here i would use vint’s blog to try to open up a public forum about the point we might have formulated more concretely.)

unfortunately, it looks like we’ve been sidelined into assumptions of my personality. you can believe whatever you want about me from these comments, my blog, my forum posts, inworld, however. i’m not sure you’ve done an adequate looksee as to my character (if either you or codered have even bothered). i do not bear you any ill will whatsoever. i do truly love you and the freedom established in yourself for its expression in our world. however, in that freedom, that i hope you defend as much as i, we are all allowed an equal freedom to express our opinions in response to one another’s inworld representations.

it was my hope that your installation on the ground level, right next to the Help Brasil parcel might need some further articulation than what i found on the notecard at the top of the spinning blocks. the point being made, so close to the Brasil parcel being hacked and object spammed, DJ moving out, and your banning of both Brasil owners from your parcel kind of gave my neighbourly concerns a rise. chatting with DJ and other SIM residents added a further measure of intrique. i thought we would address some of these concerns for the benefit of a more coherent community understanding. i suppose that opportunity was not to be (as our freedom allows). we’ll have to find another instance for discussion some other time or place perhaps.

sorry if i’ve swayed vint’s phenomenal blog into matters skewed from its purpose. please IM me if you’d like to discuss matters you’re comfortable communicating.

Ok Ms Mayne,

Need to put you straight on a few things.

There was and never has been any installation on ground level, the blocks were an advert for the venue that is in the air above.

How can DJ Magenta have any complaints about pictures of naked men when he was selling penises!? I find naked men and penises very pleasing to the eye and so do many others, it’s a matter of taste.

And what are you suggesting by the “parcel being hacked and object spammed”? Trust me I have had numerous attacks on my property and I have the evidence to prove it, what do you have anymore than gossip and hearsay?

Frankly, DJ Magenta Wilder was an idiot, he wanted to buy my land and when I politely declined he became pushy and aggressive, he instigated the bad feeling. I have the chat logs, they make revealing reading.

Frankly, I do not owe you or anyone else an explanation but you have been sneaking around whispering and gathering evidence against me from a bunch of people who find penises offensive. It’s a joke. Get a grip.

If you are or anyone else are so easily offended then really you should not be living in a mature sim. I am offended by shopping malls, casinos and ugly architecture but it is none of my business what people erect (no pun intended) on their own property and I have no right to ask them to remove anything or complain and I never have.

Basically, you’re a bunch of bullies, thinly disguising this with talk of love and being a good neighbour.

Good day to you. I am not discussing this any further.

*Codie can smell bullshit miles away, I wish you luck if you try to take her on.

EnCore:

At no point did Arahan ever do anything to the Help Brazil people; Arahan was there first, indeed many, many months before they arrived. The moment they came they set about a concerted orchestration of attacks motivated to have him shut up the installation and leave. They went everywhere from griefing him with IMs and object spam to leaving super prims littered covering up the installation. I know this to be 100% unequivocally the case because at many points I was involved in helping him deal with these punks. Furthermore he even rode out attempts by Linden Lab themselves to silence him based on the constant abuse reports faked by Help Brazil and their cohorts.

I’m immensely proud of him for standing his ground and refusing to acquiesce to their attacks and threats. In a world of vapidness and material concerns, Arahan brought to light issues that don’t get the mainstream attention they deserve. If all you saw were flying penises, you completely missed the point of the installation. There’s a photograph of two young men, not even 18 years old, who were killed in Iran several years ago because they were lovers. This story barely broke the gay press in the US and UK– forget about hearing about it on CNN or the BBC. Two young boys murdered by their government because of who they loved. That’s a lot more disgusting than what happens in a video game, don’t you think?

Thanks Josh.

Lucky I have witnesses (and friends) like you that know the reality of the situation.

I doubt she or any of her cronies care what the work is about. I am not going to compromise that message for any of these people.

Just one of the many people that have been affected by ’super fun happy club’. This is what I have to hang onto :

“I visited Arahan’s work today and was really and truly appalled by what I saw. It was hideous and terrifying but beautiful all at the same time. The build upset me so much that even after I logged out, it stuck with me for hours and I started crying, especially thinking about the Iranian youths.

Art is meant to evoke emotions. Arahan’s work definitely did that for me, and it also inspired me to try and do something about it.”

Ah, yes. I advise anyone who has not seen Daddy’s installation to see it, before passing judgement. Everything in it has a meaning, a story. I cannot control what your emotions will be, but only request a deeper look into the Super Fun Happy Club.

Can I add to that advice? Of course I can, it’s my blog. :d

If you know yourself to be not very open-minded and a very uptight person, don’t go and take a look. And if you do so anyway, don’t complain on this blog, please.
