Cannery and Dump: a Memorial
November 5, 2008 2:22 amAs I start typing this, Lindens should be deleting, erasing for good from the Grid Second Life, ‘The Dump’ and ‘Cannery’ sims, together with the 6 remaining Rezzable owned voids. Decommissioning is ordered for November 4th, although I assume Lindens are very busy deleting and converting voids anyway - cause to the recent happenings -, so nobody really knows when exactly they will *poof*. Anyway, the rest of this post is not Rezzable’s point of view on the removal of both sims, it’s my personal one, as a Resident that has great memories of these sims and the people I met there, even before I became part of the Rezzable team. (On the bright side: Greenies Lawn gets upgraded!)
Just to make things clear, official Rezzable announcement: go here; Vint on a nostalgia trip, read on!
My Second Life profile still reads: ‘I’m still a youngster as it comes to SL, but willing to learn and open to (almost) everything. Don’t hesistate to talk to me. I speak Dutch, English and French and have slight notices of German.‘ Guess what? I really need to change that. The willing to learn and open… now seems a bit dubious at least, and I am not really a youngster anymore either. I have met the most interesting avatars & their humans, of which some disappeared from the metaverse again. I have watched the creation of some of the most impressive sims in Second Life from terraforming on, I tremendously enjoyed noticing the community grow on them, together achieving things that would not be possible with only a handful of avatars, and then now… I am present at some of those simulators’ virtual death. Murder? Maybe. But it’s not Rezzable I hold responsible for their premature deletion. Anyway, I feel old. Where I felt so enthusiast about dino destory, I now think Vint would cry, if we would have fluids physics inworld. I can’t even imagine how Beatrix Newt & the others that put all their building skills into these areas now feel.
A major part of my ‘past’ at the Cannery, I shared with Miss Shoshana Epsilon - who has just opened her shop inworld, which you should really check out. But where was I? Oh yes, nostalgia trip. Guess it all started when I met RaR at the Paradise Lost (Lots changed there too, but it’s still ours!), and Greenies which back then did not have a home yet. Somehow I ended up working on the first SLart at the Cannery SL photography show with Sho. It was maybe, probably the first SL photography exhibition of such magnitude on the Grid. I must admit, the second show might have been a bit less of a success, but still great. Me to blame for that, btw, not Miss Shoshana!
In both cases, what we achieved there was amazing, got me some great ‘virtual’ & ‘real’ friends, and learned me a whole lot about the fact that organising things in a virtual worlds is just as difficult (if not more difficult than) as in ‘first life’. It also grew my fondness for ‘Second Life photography’ and ‘SLart‘ (<- this is still ongoing btw) in general. Christ! I even took my first WindLightâ„¢ photographs at the Cannery. I got to see Sho’s nipple. Ok, Photoshop, I admit! I attended great parties & live shows at Cannery, and even got to work with the Koinup peepz! And all that before this.
After that I met the lovely Miss Angelina Rhode on Cannery & Dump, admired amongst other Prad Prathivi’s work at Cannery, it hosted Live music & a photo exhibition for Relay for Life (credit to Claudia Mantis), there was the dagger eye gallery with it’s famous moaning, sexy whispering and holograms to support Melodious Source’s work, Verde had it’s love affair with Miss Kryptonia there and _so_ much more… .
No wonder I feel ‘auwch’, right? All my friends & family think I suffer from PMS since October 27th, how do I explain to them it’s not female hormones, just some weird state of the mourning process?
On the bright side of things, I’m seriously lobbying to keep the Giant Floating Pig inworld. Anyone got bright ideas on that? And errr… as I was doing ‘remember’ cards anyway, and people - mainly real humans - keep pointing out to me that there are far more serious ‘first life’ issues:
(Wow! You’re still reading? Say ‘yes, I am!’ in the comments, I’m curious how many people got this far on such a ‘Second Life Drama’ post. Not our land anymore, not our world anymore, but at least we still own our drama! ;))

Yes, I am! ;-D
I’ve yet to explore anything of Rezzable’s yet. But, I can tell from the way you write about it how much it means to you. It’s tragic to see anything that can affect someone so emotionally disappear like this, whatever the reason.
*hugz*
Hahahah - yes, I am Vint ~
It is sad to see something go *sigh* With LL latest decisions I don’t want to think of all the projects that are going to stop - simply disappear from the Grid.
I still haven’t cried about it. Somewhere I feel comfort in the fact I’m not the only one who will lose something that even though it’s pixels has been important to me. I start to laugh when I think about the RL interview I gave to a magazine and talked with so much enthusiasm about all the possibilities in Second Life … now, I just don’t know what to think of it all. It’s not about not about losing creative ideas, the desire to build & create - organize and meet great people along the way. I just don’t wat to be a puppet of Linden Lab *sigh*
Ok ok back on topic. I’m sorry you have to see one of your favorite places closing. But … in this virtual world where there isn’t a real substance. We are still able to cherish memories and experiences, and celebrate the new friends we made!
Yes. I’m reading too. I’m fairly new to these sims, but with my work blogging for you mob I’ve gotten to explore the Cannery first as just a cool background for photos… then a growing realisation of just how wonderful it is as a creation. Loss is valid no matter whether it be mourning for a person, an animal, a memory or dream.
Yes, I am too! :-P
Read about the deletion in the Rezzable blog, very sad. But, Vint, seriously, “Decommissioning is ordered for November 4th, although I assume Lindens are very busy deleting and converting voids anyway”?? Is it me, or they are taking routinely TWO MONTHS MINIMUM to fulfill the slightlest administrative petition (read: ticket), even when by being so slow they are losing big money? The most realistic scenario is that you’ll get your sims incapacitated (i.e., dismantled and unusable, waiting for the “really inminent” change to happen) for a month or more, then get a Linden on you “are you sure you want to delete your void? Please remember that with our new pricing schema you can pay much more and thus contribute to a better experience for new residents”, etc., then whatever the reply it will be a month more, usw …
I wish my deletion orders were processed in the same week. Or month. Oh well. I’m sure tomorrow M’s announcemend will bring us plenty more of adorned nothingness :-)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings about that!
I’m glad I own my own drama - at least LL hasn’t found a way to charge us more for *that* yet :) And ‘yes I am!’ at the end of the post :P
Thank you Vint <3
I’m alright, a little sad, but alright. Focusing on the new projects, taking what I learned from all that hard work and applying it to the future.
Has reached the end, but lets see what the Lab has to say for themselves today.
Thanks Vint,
very sad that any sim has to be shut down like that but worse when they are basically showcasing how you can use SL to the best of its ability in different genre’s. If the pig needs a home, I have a lot of grass at Imogen. Not sure how many prims he is though but I would seriously consider it.
yes, I am!
Sad to see the Cannery go, so many sweet memories …
Thanks, Vint. Thanks for all your work there, you and all the Rezzable team.
I have sweet memories there, nice collaborating with you, Shoshana and all the people there.
[…] 05NOV08: Sadly “The Cannery” will be “deleted” in some days, take a look at this post to have more […]
Yes, I am too :-)
So sad to see them go… so many great memories from both SIMs!
Guess we’ll just have to hold on tight to them!
On another note… I never *did* see the giant flying pig… /me sobs
Yes, me eez!
It’s sad to hear The Cannery and The Dump are going to be poofed (in the non-gay meaning of the word).
I never really spent much time at The Dump, but was a big fan of The Cannery. I’ve met new people there, or their “artistic impressions of SL”, and it was fun to work together with you on that camera and with Claudia on the RFL fundraiser event.
That hopefully will find a new home now?
As for memorabelia: I bought that mouse with the box of matches, but realised afterwards it’s probably for sale at Greenies aswell. I liked the floating piggy too, but didn’t go for it cuz it’s rather big to rez over my place (and it’s no mod so can’t resize it). Perhaps it can be sold with resizer script(s) in one of the Rezzable sims?
I hope it can find a new home though, perhaps not Greenies, but it would be funny to see it make a “tour” around various places in-world (like that garden gnome in the Amelie Poulain movie) :o)
Yup! Right here and present!
Yes I am.
*offers plenty of condolences*
I’m saddened by the turn LL and SL is taking and losing beautiful artwork totally pisses me off….
Hehe nice pig ;)
Well I got to see the pig last night..
well hell yes.
nothing is constant but change itself and so it goes…)
