Bye bye Sploders

Code Red just lost it's last revenue stream (very minimal it was). We are loosing the sploders that was a real entertaining game to play while dancing on the floors. Oh well...

Definitely sucks. What changed? Wasn't the FBI invited into SL a long time ago to investigate casinos and we never heard anything negative from that, then suddenly this policy goes into effect? Sure, SL stopped allowing advertising of casinos a while back, but why didn't they just put the ban into effect at that time instead of delaying the inevitable? When I first joined SL, I was surprised to see casinos in the first place, feeling that it was definitely online gambling and not allowed in the US, but I figured LL had a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, hehe.

I have a feeling more restrictive policies are on the way - I am guessing they are afraid to implement them all at once or their online concurrence stats would plummet. I'd prefer LL did not string us along and just revise their TOS now and be done with it, so we know what they expect from us, and if we should look to other worlds...

I have mixed feelings on the topic too, mirroring what Myg and Alex have to say. I won't miss the lag-monsters that are casinos, but on the other hand, we lose one more right...so in reality this ranks right up there with banning words or "letter groups" from searches/events/classifieds.

"Profit motive interferes with concepts of human and civil rights, virtual or otherwise."

I couldn't have said it better. Robin Linden's 'lawyers' comment still angers me deeply. They are most concerned with covering their sorry asses.
I have been approved as a Mentor this week and although I like helping people, I am not too enthousiastic about volunteering for Linden Lab.

The fight for Topgol is not in opposition to the fight for virtual freedom. It's just important that we recognize we're living in a dictatorship, and that no matter how benign a particular dictatorship may seem at first, the corruption of unrestricted power is unavoidable. Profit motive interferes with concepts of human and civil rights, virtual or otherwise.

Banning casinos is not good. We don't need to be protected--and LL is only trying to protect itself. In the end, that's going to backfire too.

I'm so totally mixed about it. Sure I want the lag to improve in Topgol and other places, but I cringe at the thought of over policing anything in Second Life. I was never against gambling, per se. I just thought casino owners shouldn't lag up mainland with crap scripts and camping chairs. That's not being a good neighbor. But I never wanted Linden to ban gambling--it's a terribly dangerous slope for us all and one that I fear will lead to a narrowing of our world, ultimately. They are setting themselves up legally, I think, and in the current atmosphere your fears about banning adult content are well founded. We may in the end have to abandon the fight for Topgol to embrace the fight for virtual freedoms...

I won't miss casinos but that is not a good thing to do. If it is our world our imagination, if it has to be a brave new world then dictatorship has no place in it.
