The Baron of BardHaven and I do not always agree. This silly nobleman seems to minimise the strength of the Second Life written press & rantings, and always has that elite ‘I am Caledon nobility’ air drifting around him. Not much of a positive intro, you say? Wait! That’s exactly why I was so impressed that the Baron - for the SL bloggers Mix’n Match - writes so openly about his first experiences in Second Life, and more important, what drove him here. Seeing the current high instream of new residents and the cause thereof, this is a story that proves that maybe - with correct guidance - they also can become a Valuable Addition to the Second Life community.

‘Day One’ was suggested by Tiessa Montgolfier. The Baron of BardHaven chose ‘SL and RL - Separated at Birth or Art Imitating Life?’ which ended up in Ariadne Korna’s virtual lap and was published at Free Finds For Men. News from BardHaven is hosting Toilets in SL by Eliza Wrigglesworth. ‘Day One’ was originally mixed and matched to appear on avatrian.com, but as they seem to have bailed out, The Baron’s post goes here, and I hope it will be appreciated by many!

Day One

by BardHaven

I have been asked to examine my earliest experiences in Second Life and as I have been here more the three years now, it takes a bit of work to remember that far back. Even now looking back at them they are a smattering of false steps and half measures and compromises and exploratory sex.

Like most people I know, I came to SL because of a woman. I had been in one or another virtual world, with or without pretty pictures, for near on ten years when I stumbled into the beta for The Matrix Online, and spent more than a year playing and creating in that world. At the time, it was a perfect fit for me. Clever storyline, stylish avatars, and guns, guns, guns. Some of the most enjoyable moments I have ever spent online, certainly the most exciting and action-packed were in the closing days of that Beta as the world was destroyed horrifically by a burning virus to make way for the release…the Matrix was rebooted and I was there to watch the servers shut down and the Megacity fold in on itself. Heady days indeed.

I remained with the released version for some time, until role playing dramas become to much for me, and I realized it was time to find an exit strategy. That was about the time one woman I was role playing with left the game suddenly and brutally (at least character wise) and I met…well, I will call her L since that is the initial of the name she took here in SL. We were drawn to one another and spent a great deal of pleasant time speaking and role playing and *cough* other things in avatar form, or as they were called there, Redpills.

The *cough* other things were not always simple, however, as in MXO, one could not actually remove your underwear. Daunting, to be sure. So one would end up in an abandoned virtual building, stripped down to briefs and bra and panties, sitting on a couch next to one another making with the sex talk in IM. Add to this that the animation was a pretty typical nonchalant pose, appearing slightly bored and distracted, not looking at one another…and it was not the most erotic presentation one could find. Plus occasionally a mission would be generated nearby for another character, and you might suddenly find yourself in the middle of a small shooting war or attacked by wandering gang members, while sitting in your underwear on a couch next to a pretty girl who looks like she wants to be somewhere else. It actually reminded me a bit of my Junior Prom.

Eventually we both had had enough of this situation, so L suggested we try out SL since many refugees from MXO had come here. At first I resisted, it made no sense to me. There was no point to SL, no goals, no levels. It was just a massive chat room. However, without me (and without my knowledge, fwiw) she explored SL and came back to tell me it was really nice…and you could have genitals…and whips.

Whips.

She had me from the whips.

I had been very involved in several Adults-Only MUDs and MOOS before Matrix Online, so this seemed to me like the next natural step. I agreed to create a character and have a look around. Inside of a week, she had taken me around, shown me how to buy a shape and hair and decent clothes, bought me my first virtual penis, and soon we were buying land and architecture together, setting up house. Curtains and everything.

Whips. Genitals. Domestication.

And Sex Animations.

Did I ever really have a chance to resist?

The next few weeks are a blur of buying and meeting and dancing and confusions and jealousies and Jesus Christ (don’t ask) and pixilated boot bumping.

When the smoke cleared, L had moved on after a few weeks but would come and go from SL for awhile, under several alts. She may be doing so still for all I know.

I, however, am still the same, still here in SL.

Still here buying and meeting and dancing and getting confused and *avoiding* jealousies (thank god) and boot bumping now and again.

Jesus Christ isn’t involved anymore however. At least not to my knowledge.

Thanks L, for everything…and the whips.

The Baron of Bardhaven: biography

Lord Zealot Benmergui, Baron of BardHaven, Ruffian King of Caledon, Last Defender of the Dark Hope, Keeper of the Shadow that Sings and Magus d’Calamatia Majora was born at the age of 6 in a speeding carriage somewhere on the Italian/Swiss border. His parents, a morbidly sentimental English débutante with a taste for the intellectual and the excommunicated and an elderly Italian nobleman with a weakness for somber ladies and erotic pastry, died in a tragic Mongoose stampede when he was still at school at Eton, leaving him the only heir to the vast holdings of BardHaven.

Embarking on a successful career as an international businessman, adventurer, evangelist and agent provocateur, the young Baron soon was a familar face and community leader in some of the more unusual and disgraceful circles in Europe, Asia and Latin America before returning to the family seat in Mayfair at the legendary Palace of Lost Causes. Since returning to Caledon, he has become well known as a writer, fashion reviewer, gothic savant, betrayer of innocent strumpets and torch singer performing under the name Miss Monique Borgia, the Iron Chanteuse.

Although there are many in Second Life, those ‘non-profits’, we don’t talk about them that much, unless they organise a shoe, fashion or hair fair. And because there are so many, it is hard to keep an overview, know them all. And because there are so many, we - the ‘average residents’ hardly do anything more but buy a beautiful new outfit for ‘the good cause’ and feel we’ve done our part. So I was relieved I did not have to write this post, and very much er.. ‘chuckled’ about Tiessa Montgolfier - Mistress Strangelove - having to write this. I wondered where non-profits would take her.. a hilarious post about even more hair - pubic maybe - for her adventures? New shoes? But no, she wrote a good, serious and touching post. With a hell of a ‘challenge’, or ‘call to action’, whatever you may name it, in the end. So by this, Miss Tiessa, I apologise!

My blogpost for this Mix’n Match Game was about ‘Creator vs. Consumer‘ and appeared on Her Royal Princess Ivory’s Blog, whilst the topic suggested by me ‘The evolution of SLex‘ was blogged well by Teagan Blackthorne on Crap Mariner’s blog. ‘Non-profits’ in Second Life was suggested by Rik Riel from Rikomatic. On Tiessa’s blog, Cat Magellan is writing a first hand report on ‘Mixing RL and SL – The dynamics and pitfalls of living and playing in SL with your RL significant other’. And so the circle is round. ;)

Non-profits in Second Life

By Tiessa Montgolfier

Through the mix and match blogger challenge, I received the challenge of writing about non-profits and Second Life for Vint’s blog. A topic I know little about and about which my usual irreverent writing style is probably out of place. I contemplated writing about “The Home For Wayward Subs” or some other imaginary non-profit and making a cutesy, joking blog post, as is usual for me.

However, something compels me to be serious about this because non-profits are almost all designed to help people in some way or another. In my simple, black and white world, helping people is serious business and when this post is seen, I want people to be
educated about the subject, rather than entertained.

So, my own internal challenge is to educate about non-profits in SecondLife, a subject I know nothing about, on Vint’s blog, one of the more highly read SecondLife blogs, and say something profound that will move everyone to be more aware of non-profits in SecondLife. Yeah. No pressure.

Oh, and add in some photos. To Vint’s blog. Let that thought sink in for a moment. Double the pressure. Or triple.

Let’s begin, then, where all good stories begin… with me.

Okay, I couldn’t even do one sentence of serious. But all good articles or stories begin with a problem or a conflict and through the
course, bring the reader to a conclusion or a resolution.

Thus, let’s begin with me…

Because I am the problem.

I know nothing about non-profits in SecondLife and when I was thinking about what to write in this article - an interview, an overview of non-profts, or a whirlwind tour of resources for non-profits. All of those have been done, and done much better than I could ever hope to achieve. Just type “nonprofit second life” into Google and you will have links to everything you ever needed. Knowing one’s limitations is the first step in overcoming them.

Why do I know nearly nothing about non-profits in SecondLife? Have I been living under a rock? I’ve run into the Relay For Life signs and other worthy charities; I’ve even donated to a few in world. In Real Life, I volunteer for many things, donate to many causes, and participate in numerous activities involving charities. Why am I so divorced from that activity in SecondLife?

It goes back to the “education versus entertainment” dichotomy I mentioned earlier, I still see SecondLife as a place for
entertainment, a place to go, to be an alternate me, to have fun, but not a place that is actually a true part of my life. At least not how some people use it.

Let me tell you about a few of the people I’ve met in SecondLife and how they use it. Right next door to my plot of First Land was a very nice person, we talked, we had fun, it was all very neighborly. One evening we talked more about Real Life. I discovered she was in a wheel-chair in Real Life. It was like I hit a brick wall. She told me about walking, dancing, and just being. She was able to do things she was not able to do in Real Life, but even more importantly, she was free to be “normal”. She wasn’t seen as “that girl in a wheelchair.” A person to be helped or pitied; not an “other” at all. I won’t moralize about this, it is sufficient to know that it occurs.

One man I know is a “shut-in” in Real Life, he is nearly unable to travel outside of his home because of his illnesses and their
challenges. However, he plays in Second Life all the time. He too is free to just be himself, forget all of his problems, and have fun in a way he is unable to in Real Life.

Someone else I know is deaf, but in SecondLife, she can socialize completely normally with everyone else because of the chat interface.

There are many more like that, people I’ve met in world that I never knew had Real Life disabilities. Many more in my friend’s list are probably disabled as well and I don’t even know it.

THE WILDE COLLECTIVE ON CRIMES AND INJUSTICES - MORE THAN OUR SHARE
[”Written by all the members of wilde, but namelessly for their protection and greater transparency”]
most of us, if not all of us,
have had things stolen from us, because we were disabled
many of us, if not all of us,
have been slapped or abused physically, and several times
all of us have been verbally abused - a lot!
which hurts by the way!!
we’ve had our money taken from us
perhaps the greatest pain when our dignity has been taken, stolen.
our humanity, feelings, kicked around and abused control.
people take control.
they take control of our things, our decisions.
they force their will and preferences upon us.
no we cant buy that. no we cant eat that.
no we have to watch this. no i dont have time now.
no you cant go anywhere.
no you will be unable to move for awhile.
no…
- Wilde Cunningham, 05/12/2004

That was written by sufferers of cerebral palsy and found in the wonderful post, Second Life Is My WheelChair. I told you others say it much more eloquently than I.

At least one non-profit is dedicated to enable the disabled to enter Second Life.

All change begins with an intent followed by a single, simple action.

The challenge in the title of this blog-post has nothing to do with the challenge of writing this post, it has everything to do with the challenge I am about to give to everyone, not a simple meme where you list a few things people don’t know about you, but a real challenge…

Anyone can donate money, the real challenge is to donate time.

I want to see blog posts about how people volunteered their time to help others.

A very simple challenge and the action doesn’t need to be major, every little bit helps. If all you can do is donate and not provide time, do so, make a difference in someone’s life.

If you are looking for ideas, the picture shows the Path
Of Support on HealthInfo Island, where a large number of non-profit organizations have provided easy links and information about what they do. Talk a walk down it.

Maybe I didn’t educate very much in this blog post, maybe I didn’t entertain you much either, but I did one thing, I spoke from my heart.

What’s this all about? Well, ArminasX came to me with the idea of ’swapping blogs’ for a few posts. The idea quickly grew into something bigger, and we would like to invite the entire SLogosphere to participate. In this Mix’n Match game, more players means more interaction which means all the more fun.

Why would you participate?

A few good reasons why you would participate in the SL Bloggers Mix’n Match game:

You hate to be left out.

You’re looking forward to broaden your virtual horizons, and with this I do not mean maxing your draw distance! ;) Admit it, we all have our ‘hot issues’ we regularely blog about. Would it not be a good thing to look beyond that, to go & write further that we’re used to, and research some new virtual stuff?

You want to make new friends in the SLogosphere. Because you can never have enough friends or linklove?

You’re currently suffering from blogblock. You’re desperate for a good story!

You appreciate a challenge. Demonstrate you can write something that makes some - or absolutely none at all - sense, regardless how comfortable you are with the topic.

You like the unexpected. Because who knows who will be writing for your blog!

Mixing and matching, how will we do it?

You let us know you want to play by leaving a comment - including a valid email address - either here or on ArminasX’ announcement. You have until Friday the 31th of October to decide if you want to participate in one of the kewlest Second Life blog games ever. That comment will include:

Your blog’s name & location.

Your name

A title and subject for a (Second Life related) blogpost.

A valid email address.

On November 1st, a innocent hand - I suggest that’s mine, no offence meant, Mr ArminasX Saiman :d - draws the ‘winning’ combinations and those will appear on vintfalken.com and secondeffects.com. Participating SL bloggers will also be notified by email. An example of how the list will look like:

BloggerA

BloggerB

BloggerC

SubjectB

Subject

SubjectA

BlogC

BlogA

SubjectB

This means that BloggerA will write about a subject suggested by bloggerB on the bloggerC’s blog.

Once you got your ‘blogging mission’ you will start writing on your assigned subject. When your story is finished - and between 500 & 1000 words - you hand it over together with at least one snapshot to illustrate your story to the owner of the blog that will publish it. Deadline to do so is Sunday November 9th. All stories will be published on Wednesday November 12th. The format for that is:

Blogpost & pictures. Style at will.

Author name (+ link to his/her blog)

Person who suggested the subject (+ link to his/her blog)

Link to the blog where your blogpost will appear (optional)

Link to the person who will blog the subject you suggested (optional)

Who is game?

I’ll start with signing myself & vintfalken.com up:

My admiration - as usual, btw - for leading lady Veyron Supercharge and her side kick Tiessa Montgolfier. Where Jene Tempura was the best selling male avatar - more than 20k L$ - both Zoe & Codie broke SL Blogger sales records with dazzling amounts such as 50,000L$/blogger. But congratulations to all who had the nerves to get on that auction platform!

How did I do? First, I should mention, I bought myself two SL blogger slaves: Mickie Nikolaidis - which besides being utterly cute stays a mystery to me still, can anybody get me some linkage for ‘micky nikolaidis’? - and well known blogger Rheta Shan. I lost bids on amongst others Jene Tempura and Nadine Nozaki. Where Mickie will be used as SL photography slave, Rheta was donated to Mistress Codebastard Redgrave.

And whom did I went up with? Well, I’m delighted happy to tell that I may now - for a short while - call Her Royal Red Highness my Mistress, and Rheta Shan, Gabby Panacek, Marx Dukek and Jessyka Richard my sisters. Although… I always did want a brother! ;) Now just to find - non-sexual, I did put down some limits - ways to keep the Mistress happy and proud of me!

Best outfit award - which has no prize attached - goes to Mr Keeme Brown for his lobster attached to ****. He & his team also get the ‘best totally silly but hilarious entertainment on voice’ award. Regardless if you won a slave, got sold, met new people, or bumped into old ones again, I think we can all agree that this SL blogger’s party was a huge success and we should do this monthly again. Who’s up for organising the next one?

As communicated by Miss Veryon on Google Docs for immediate release:

When: Saturday September 7th, 1pm SLT until we pass out
Where: Sierra Nevada Sim (TP)

Tired of the same old usual party? People showing in some unusual costume or outfit, everyone commenting on how lovely they look. How about something different? :D

Mistress/Master Ball (subs invited too)

Theme: Mistress/Master Ball - submissive’s can come too… :D If you’re not “into” D/s, then come in your favorite kinky wear for fun.
Rules: Things have to stay like movie R rated at most. If you’ve seen an R rated movie lately, that covers a lot of ground…. Some area will be provided for extra curricular activities.

SL Blogger Auction

Now for the fun part, a submissive auction. Not one, but two of them. First auction will start at 2pm SLT. Second auction will start at 7pm SLT. You can be in both auctions should you choose to be. The winner gets the slave for 24 hours (if that’s 1 RL or SL day that’s between the two avies). Any limits the sub has must be stated before the auction starts. No SL TOS violations (you know what that means) are allowed. As part of terms the sub can agree for the time to start after the party or during it. Starting price for all auctions is L$500. The auctioneer will take a 25% commission from the winner, and the sub will get the rest. While the auction is going on, the auctioneer is the the sub’s dom and must be obeyed.

Subs who will be auctioned should report to the auctioneer 30 minutes prior to their auction and be prepared to be available for viewing. Comments from the peanut gallery are welcome during the auction.
Doms who wish to volunteer to be auctioned off - for a good cause - will be given preferential treatment, but once you start, you have to finish, and you are bound in good faith to follow through.
Anyone who is not a dom or sub and wishes to be auctioned off may do so, but should understand - uh - what they’re getting into… :D

If you want to be auctioned off, you need to IM Veyron Supercharge or email her at veyron.supercharge at gmail dot com before the party. Note which slot or slots you want to be in. If you plan to attend as a bidder also email or IM as a courtesy so we can gauge how much interest there is.

Try to wear a group tag that lets people know if your a dom, sub or undecided… :)

P.S. Rumour has if there is a good response, several well known bloggers might be up for auction….

Most in-theme Blogger and Flickerite was probably Mylena Aquitaine, who with the catfish-look took ‘nautical’ to a whole new level. She stood and danced bravely: defeating lag and ignoring all sushi-remarks. Alhough I have just meagre building skills, the lady deserved a decent fish tank, I thought. And in the end, well, she makes the whole bowl look good. ;) Runner up was probably our own personal mermaid that Veyron became for the occasion. A close match with Mr. Fugazi’s penguin.

New bloggers? Yes, as always people I did not meet in SL - or not even read about - showed up. Amongst others:

Miss Pia Qi from the ‘Silks Caravanserai‘. No need to say, it’s all - or a lot - about lovely Silks?

Tymmerie Thorne from Girl Wonder Speaks - she writes about the Blogmeet here in ’seamen all over the dancefloor’ -, pointed out to me by Casius Masala (his Flickr stream).

Sofian from Second Life Sofian, who seems to be in the assumption I ate the fish. Well, I did not! Really! Honest! I like the fishies! ;)

And then there were also the ‘old SL bloggers fossiles’ present: Miss Zoe Connolly, Her Red Hawtness Codie, the lovely Lillie Yifu, Mr Wrath Paine, … . Noticeably missing from this Second Life Blogmeet were Miss Myg and Mister Alex. They claim illness as an excuse.

And we did not even go home empty handed: during the late hours, Mister Crap Mariner gave out clockworks and wind-up’s for all who favoured one. Yeey! I now feel fully automated and even more cute! ;) And Mr. Popinjay took me a lovely photograph. I look like one of the though, film noir girls here, no?

Other write-ups of this super-fun SL Blogmeet:
