SL4B: The Lindens (Paparazzi Style II)
August 21, 2007 3:31 pmStill wondering why it was that hard to catch a seat at the opening speech Philip Linden gave @ SL4B? Lots and lots of Lindens present. Now, you’d think, if they want to talk to Governor Phil, they can just email? Some I managed to snapshot before crashing:
Lotte Linden

She must be from Texas, aiwght?
PierreLuc Linden

I just knew some of them were taking their God status just to serious. Hun, giving the residents an open source viewer which is terribly buggy and has huge memory loss, still doesn’t get you this wings!
Mia Linden

Hmmm. Maybe that was fashionable four years ago, it isn’t anymore now. The balloons do get Mia some extra points for cuteness.
Kona Linden

Neat! No mean comments. *grins*
Lisa Linden

Hmm. Lady, you know, we have prims for a reason. Hair is one of those reasons. And did you paint your eyes with tip-ex again?!
Neuro Linden

The old man with glasses look makes me want to trust him. Really. I’d take a cookie from him anytime.

Shoeboxing: SL4B visitors and call for reviews
August 9, 2007 12:42 am
I snapshotted a lot of people that came to visit me at SL4B. Here are some of the photographs. =)
I also remember seeing a photograph on Flickr from a lady that said she just gave up on SL4B and would tear her whole build down again because of the unbearable lag at the SL4B sims. Does anybody remember which lady / photograph that was?
Warning: I just ‘rediscovered’ that folder, so you may expect more of these pictures in the near future and maybe a review of what I liked and disliked about Second Life’s 4th Birthday event.
They already started planning the 5th, so mentioning what could be done better might not be such a bad idea. SignPostMarvin said that he did not receive much reviews for SL4B when he called for them by group notice - I missed that notice too - so, what were the first - and second - impressions?

Second Life 4th Birthday: Paparazzi style
June 24, 2007 5:40 am
I’m not that good at sitting still during speeches (and TP’ing out did not work), so I’ve shot some Lindens. I figured I’d just read soon to be ex-governor of SL Phil’s speech in the chat logs. ;)
Does anybody have the link to the media file/video already? I was one of those persons not being able to access it for leave streaming.
PS. *hint* Voice is enabled on the SL4B sims and I’m running Firstlook Voice. *hint* (I still did not test it, as nobody seems to enable voice on their clients?)
Anyway, here goes the chat log:
Philip Linden: Hi All
Philip Linden: Happy happy birthday everyone!
Philip Linden: So many people.
Philip Linden: Who here was there that night?
Philip Linden: When we had the ball drop.
Philip Linden: Love that old map
Philip Linden: Reminds me of June 22, midnight, 2003
Philip Linden: I’m not using the voice client right now.
Philip Linden: How is everyone?
Philip Linden: Feeling good myself. Nice to be in-world.
Philip Linden: So many new faces.
Philip Linden: And a few old ones too…. hiya Yadni.
Philip Linden: We’ve got some old lastnames out there…
Philip Linden: Nomad
Philip Linden: Zugzwang
Philip Linden shouts: Does anyone remember how many times we used to let last names be used?
Philip Linden shouts: Yep, the original goal was 150
Philip Linden shouts: But even back then, we still sometimes let it go to that.
Philip Linden: This is an amazing event and set of builds.
Philip Linden: OK that sounds like fun.
Philip Linden: Let’s start with a Linden bear… I guess that is a crazy idea.
Philip Linden: OK next person to buy for zero gets it.
Philip Linden: That was sorta fun.
Philip Linden: How about another one?
Philip Linden: Hope we don’t crash the sim :)
Philip Linden: OK let me get closer.
Philip Linden: Can everyone hear me?
And then, then Phil’s Big Speech:
Well… let me just start by saying thank you…. For being a part of this big dream coming alive. People often ask me these days if I felt at the start like SL would work. And what I answer is that I always knew that SL would work,But that I dodn’t know exactly when. So thank you all for being the ‘when’ For those who haven’t heard me speak before, And I guess there are a few here! I was dreaming about SL since I was a kid. I felt sure that a whole world could be simulated on computers. and watching it all happen. We used to talk at work about a giant forest… full of evolving plants and things… a place you could wander around in forever, which noone had ever seen. and not see the same thing twice… and know that there were places in there you would happen upon, That was how I can remember thinking about SL at the start. It is also interesting to note, There are really a lot of ways in which it also hasn’t changed. that while SL has grown so much over these last 4 years, As we grow, it is easy to worry that the magic of this place will somehow go away. But looking at the world today, it is just as magical, only bigger. The things that make SL special are coded into it at the lowest level: Those are things that are enabled by the basic technology here. That is what makes me happiest today, and keeps me loving my job! I hope this day and event are fun… a way to see SL through time. Thanks for being here! I’ll hang around to chat, but let me wrap up so that we can all wander around and enjoy the day. I’m gonna logoff and get the voice viewer so I can chat a bit!! Back in a few.
Philip did not return, though:
Daedalus Young: I warned Philip he wouldn’t be able to get back in :P
And Iridium Linden:

SL4B’s artist’s linkage
June 23, 2007 9:42 amThe artists list I took from the SL4B Art wiki and may be incomplete. If an artist has multiple plots on different sims, I only list him or her on the ‘oldest’ sim he or she is on. The linkage goes to what I find the most ‘typical’ web page for that avatar or it’s art I could find. If you find that I forgot someone or missed a ‘more representable’ page, feel free to correct me. I’ve already had to add Oliva Arteer to the list, so I think there are still others missing too. :( *still updating the list as I get more info* ;)

Pfieew, almost finished for SL4B

Ok, still doing some ‘fine tuning’ although it’s way past deadline, but who cares? Nobody responded to my ‘may we still build?’ question, so I guess it’s ok. *grins* This is how it sort of looks right now (of course with some shallow DoF added and some PS to make up for the lack of WindLight). I’m not really that happy with the build, as compared to the other boots/plots there it looks so damned artificial. I started building this with the WindLight client open and in the back of my mind so the reflections were really neat. Now, well they are just shiny. And I assume nobody will be as stupid as to take the depreciated WindLight Firstlook unto what will hopefully be a full sim. *sobs*
What I do like about the whole Second Life 4th Birthday art expositioning thingie is that the cooperation with Myg & Alex was awesome. As we have neighbouring plots, it was easy to just pay a visit or ask the other ones to come over for some help. With positioning my ‘broadly offended poseballs’ for instance. And did I already mention Myg allowed me to paint on her back wall?
Yes, you hear that correctly, if you are broadly offended by any of my work, you will now be able to show that. At the moment there’s only one close to The Irony of our Second Life’s comics - doesn’t Myg look awefully cute when broadly offended? - , but I’ll place some other ones so you can also be broadly offended by my portrets, SLelection campaign or Photoshop work.
And also Olivia Arteer and Dancoyote Antonelli seem to be friendly and cooperative neighbours. Yey! for them too. ;)
Something I also wonder about is the need for every SL4B artist to build that high. I figured it would be nice if it was easy to scout the sim by flying, so I maxed my build at 4 meters. Yet 20 to 30 meters is not an exception and that makes flying with low draw distance on - which will be probably necessary to prevent crashing - a pain. I already flew lost twice, needing to TP back to my plot and start all over.
I’m also doubting if I should put older photographs in the FlickrViewer set - the photographs in that set are the ones that display at SL4B - or that I should just put only SL4B related ones in it and add to the set as I have new ones. Anybody wants to toss a coin for me?
Still to do: broadly offensive content-texture, signs towards Arteer’s and Myg’s plots (+textures), texture for the blank wall I, texture for the blank wall II, put out more broadly offended pose balls and I’m not very happy about how the FlickrViewer boot looks.

SL4B = Stressy
June 20, 2007 10:57 am
Although I was able to strike some things off my ‘to do list’ for SL4B, it keeps growing as I’m clearly not the only one last-minuting everything. As the ‘deadline’ of 20th of June midnight SLT comes closer also the organizers are asking for a whole lot more of material. *stresses*
Luckily the FlickrViewer works, and I can still add to or remove pictures from the FlickrViewer set later. And then there are the SL4B volunteers who are always willing to help a hand. Or a paw, in Thomas Shikami’s case.

SL4B ‘Artist’s statement’ Audio File
June 19, 2007 1:56 pmOk, this is finished:
Ignore the birds and bees wind, I urgently needed to work on my tan.
Still to do before… *swearword* tomorrow:
- Find out how an object can offer/ask to open a web page when clicked upon. (rephrased: learn LSL *grins*)
- Create textures (Myg’s wall, SLelections poles, border Vint/Arteer, floor, manual for the FlickrViewer, top and side of the walls, ‘click here to open vintfalken.com’ texture, …).
- Add SLelection posters into viewers at the SLelection HQ at the SL04 sim.
- Select FlickrViewer pictures and put them in the FlickrViewer set. (+ picture of Kris and I)
- Try to make some things a bit more low-prim.
- … (I’m sure I forgot about some stuff right now).
