Video Tutorial: Using PS ‘Liquify’ on SecondLife snapshots

April 19, 2007 11:14 am

I’ve - tried to - explain this to other avies in-world for over 20 times now, and frankly, I’ve gotten rather tired of shouting out ‘use the frigging liquify tool to correct that!!!’ over and over. Badly made clothing edges, avie limbs seriously messed up by strange poses, squared parts that should be round, strange shadows, prim sticking in or out, exaggerated breast size, … most of this snapshot problems can be very easily corrected by doing some basic post-processing using the ‘Liquify’ tool in PS.

An example:

Squared breast vs. Rounded breasts

I was going to write a tutorial about this already ages ago. And then I realized I needed tons and tons of screenshots to go with it, and that I had to aquire those by taking a snapshot in PS, going to GIMP, pasting it, continuing with the liquify tool in Photoshop, taking another snapshot, going back to GIMP, copying, and back to Photoshop, and again, and again and again…

So I gave up on my ‘Text Tutorials uber Alles!’ resolution and made a video tutorial. It’s my first one evvah so please, be mild. If you have any more questions: *points at the comments and miaws*.

This video tutorial is shot in Photoshop CSII (maybe III has even more options there?) and is only a basic. Now you know that the liquify option exists, and what it does, play around with it. Get the hang of it. Experiment. And then show me some results! I’m curious!! Ow, and if you want to play with it without watching my tutorial first, you can find ‘Liquify’ in the ‘Filters’ menu. ;)

Video-tut on using the liquify tool in Photoshop to correct avatar forms and clothes in SecondLife snapshots:

Errors against the English language I bravely admit:

  1. Cloth should be dress.
  2. ‘First and all’ is no English. At all.
  3. Ctrl+Alt+Z is very bad pronounced and sounds like Ctrl+Alt+C.

I beg for forgiveness for those! There was only one take for video and one take for voice. Next time, I’ll try harder (or just go with text again). *grins* *playfully moves her neko-ears* ;)

SL-Photography tip: slow down animations

April 13, 2007 5:34 am

In the Client Menu* go to ‘Character’ and then ‘Slow Motion Animations’ to reduce the speed of all animations running on your charactar. Yes, only on yourself, so you can only use this to more easily shoot your own great dancing moves. Others will see you normally animated, so don’t waste your time asking your models to activate this.

SL printscreen: Slow Motion Animations

Credits go to Gaynor Gritzi who figured this is a Photo Tip For Narcissists and is also making some nice mosaic selfportraits using SecondLife snapshots with ArcSoft Photomontage.

*If you still don’t know how to pull up the Client and Server menu by now: it’s all about pressing ctrl+alt+D. ;)

Edit: If you have annoying things opening up when pressing ctrl+alt+d in stead of the client meny, try ctrl+alt+widowskey+d. For Mac it’s ctrl+option+d and on Linux it’s ctrl+alt+shift+d.

Full Screen Preview ‘Matrix Effect’

April 9, 2007 2:02 pm

Co-belgian-SL-hottie Bella March discovered an - until now - undocument SL-photography/snapshotting feature concerning the full screen preview and baptized it ‘the Matrix Effect’. (When are they going to name features after me?!! *grins*)

When the freeze-frame pictures appears, the ALT-ZOOM functions used during normal viewer operation, remain active and functional. This means you can freeze the action by activating the snapshot function and then you can at your own pace, zoom - rotate - pan using the regular techniques. This is so amazing and it gives you endless opportunities. While Alt-zooming part of the hidden UI reappears and after releasing the mouse, the viewer composes a new snapshots according to your snapshot-options. You can change as long as you want, 90% of the objects remain frozen, giving you enough time to look for that special angle or to cover annoying artifacts by moving the camera position. (From Discussing Matrix effect while taking snapshots.)

You can still only save the photograph once, though. So choose wisely! ;)

And of course, as Bella knows about the strange forced called ‘machinima’, the video tutorial on the ‘Matrix Effect’:

The Eyes for Free, Render Ground and IRL bugfix

March 13, 2007 1:01 am
  1. Upon request ‘my eyes’ are now available at slboutique.com for 0L$. And don’t bug me for getting an extra discount! I treat all people Avies alike. ;)
  2. Torley found yet another way to make Second Life photographs look more beautiful: turn Render Ground on or off. He’s not totally clear about that. I guess we just have to try ourselves. Go to the client menu (Ctrl+Alt+D) and then it’s ‘Rendering’, ‘Types’ and then there is ‘Ground’. On or Off? Play with it, and then let me know which one is the right one. :d
  3. Belgian country police finally catched the griefer that was constantly mouselook-move-sunning the sun either behind the horizon or behind tons and tons of rainy clouds. Excuse me whilst I enjoy that a bit. I’m getting myself a somewhat more tanned skin. ;)

Linkies: a collection

March 7, 2007 7:04 am

A random collection of Second Life related www-links I think are worth checking out:

  • SLtree.com - Tired of using search to find a nice sim to hang out? The grid is down and you want some first life reading material about second life? Second Life Tree is a directory that contains SLurls as well as ordinary ones.
My two favs? ‘Sightseeing & Adventure’ for exploring the Second Life and ‘Web Resources’ for when I don’t feel like bying extra bandwith. Codie & Vic, the Paradise Lost Club is listed, where is your CodeRedLounge? :d
  • Notabene-sl.com - If you need a Second Life contract ‘made official’ this is where you gol Nota Bene, a Second Live’s notary. ‘A Notary certifies signatures on documents. That is, it assures that a signature made on a document was indeed made by the avatar making it.’
Nota Bene also supplies model documents for building contracts, lease agreements, credentials, group statements, … Don’t expect to much of that, as there is no way to enforce the contract, but it can come on handy. If you have some free time (eg. the grid is down), you could also read this reflection on ‘The Rule of Law in Second Life’.
  • Avatar Toolbox - The Avatar Toolbox might not look slick, but it gives an easy to grasp explenation about what your avatar actually is and how to build a new one/mod one. That and a heap of links to other intersting avatar/building/clothing/… related tutorials. Refer newbs there, please! (Ow, and they give the most understandable information about invisiprims I’ve read until now.)
  • AV UV templates - A part of Robin Wood Second Life Tutorials: Vector clothing templates!!! *cheers* Why didn’t I find these any sooner? Other interesting Tuts from Wood: easy way for creating alpha masks, lace (partly shine through) textures, … .
  • Build (Cloth, Building, Script, …) - An overview of all tutorials Natalia Zelmanov has written on her blog until now. Amongst my favorites: Shirt Collars and Ties and Prim positioning.
  • Torley's assumed ancestorsTorley’s SLexicon - Just laughed my ass of with this one. I *heart* the whole blog, especially because of his humerous writing style and his way to put himself and other things into perspective, which he has proven again with this lexicon. If it was not for me suspecting him of enslaving tons of watermelon-elves in a giant factory and forcing them to create those awesome textures, I would beg her to move into my skybox. ;)

Kisa’s ‘Bokeh!’ Tutorial

Bokeh! by Kisa Naumova
Bokeh! by Kisa Naumova

The lovely - and smart too! - Kisa Naumova proves that you don’t have to be completely sober to write a good Second Life photography tutorial about ‘Bokeh’.

Bokeh is derrived from the Japanese word for Blur - boke (ぼけ) - and is just another way to say ‘Out Of Focus / OOF’, ‘Short Depth of Field’ or ‘Lens Blur’.

I second the ‘Go! Go! Go, marching ants!’ ;)

New Tutorial: a Sense of Depth

February 20, 2007 7:46 am

I’ve added a new tutorial about using Photoshop or other imaging software to add a sense of depth / gaussian blur / partial blur / DOF / shallow depth (of field) / … or whatever you wish to call it to your Second Life Snapshots.

I hope you enjoy it.

Tutorial Video: Second Life Camera Controls (by NNS)

February 19, 2007 9:06 am

I’m not a huge fan of video tutorials, but I guess some of the stuff inhere could be interesting for my younger SL-friends. The part of ‘how to break into somewhere in Second Life’ is handy when … let’s say a certain someone locks you in in her bedroom and you don’t feel like teleporting out.;)

The tutorial is made by NaturalSelectionStudios.com (visit their site for a better quality version of this tutorial) and is part of the ‘Noob Be Gone’ Series.

Ow, and the part about the fact that buttons are made to pressed is rather funny. *giggles*

February 12, 2007 11:52 am

I present to you:
Second Life Photography: in-world tips and tricks.

It’s my second tutorial and takes off where Second Life Photography: The Basics ended. It’s all about in-world options in Second Life’s Preferences and Client menus. Feedback very much wanted! ;)

Tutorial section

February 8, 2007 10:43 am

I’ve added a tutorial section and a first tutorial: ‘Second Life Photography: The Basics‘. Read it through, and ’snapshotting’ shall have no secrets for you anymore.

You can posts your results on the Second Life Flickr group and I’m always willing to take a in-world look at them too. Happy snapshotting!
