Aaargh! Cannery, AdSense, 2k comments and spam
August 23, 2007 7:39 am- Very busy working on the website for SLart at the Cannery, thus neglecting vintfalken.com for a day. ;) PS. I’ll never claim WP makes an excellent CMS again! :p)
- Gave AdSense a second change, although planning on trying this ‘let users hide ads’ thingie out. With a CTR of 0.54% I think I might as well not have ads, though. =) Like, you’re all to smart to click those things? Damned! ;)
- Spam is annoying me and probably causes me to smoke two extra cigarettes a day. Askimet - although doing a good job - can’t handle everything, so the comments on vintfalken.com switch to ‘moderated’. Don’t worry, comments from people who previously commented on this blog should get through without a problem - if not containing any urls. But new visitors will have to wait a while for their comment to be approved and to appear.
- VintFalken.com has reached over 2k comments now. *applauds to self* Trying to arrange a date for an in-world photoshoot with the lovely lady that made comment n° 2000. And no, it does not count the spam.

VintFalken.com Housekeeping
August 20, 2007 8:48 amAdded the following plugins to my WP install:
- Subscribe to comments : allows readers to receive notifications of new comments that are posted to an entry.
- Comment email responder : emails commenter when an admin replies to the comment, if commenter is not subscribed to email updates via Subscribe-to-Comments.
- TimeZoneCalculator : Calculates different times and dates in timezones with respect to daylight saving on basis of utc. For my own convencience the below of all my pages are now showing current CET and PDT/SLT time. In 24 hours format that is! But I was actually looking for something that would allow me to tag the blogposts with both CET and SLT time. I think that might be possible by tweaking the ‘time of the day’ plugin.
- Wordpress OpenID(+) : Wordpress OpenID Registration, Authentication, and Commenting. Disabled again because it is not working at the moment. Need to beg the hosting company for this and/or this first.
- Random Words : adds the ability to play with ‘random’ lists without to much hassle. I’m sure I shall think of some neat ways to use it. Either that or it stays ‘disabled’ until eternity. ;)
- Pownce plugin : Displays your public Pownce messages for all to read. I figured as Myg got me an invite for Pownce and it seems to be Twitter ‘evolved’, I should give it a try.
At first glance I like it: better ‘conversation’ functionality added, the special link & events format is neat, no more being limited to 140 characters and file sharing possible. I don’t know if I will end up continuing tolikeuse Pownce - I liked Twitter for about 3 weeks too - but as long as I do, you can find my latest public Pownce message in the sidebar. *points to the right* Just click the comment number to reply using Pownce.
I have two invites for‘Twitter evolved’Pownce left, so let me know if you want one. And Myg had/has some leftovers too. And for those already on there: feelobligedfree to add me. ;) Now let’s wait for the API and a PownceHUD?
Mozilla Firefox addons installed:
- Technorati Rank in status bar : shows a webpage’s technorati rank in the status bar. Out of curiousity and as an extension for SearchStatus 1.20.
- Split Browser Window : This splits the content area of the browser window as you like. It will help you in various cases. You can split browser infinitely, as many as your RAM and your screen allow. Enjoy split and split to your heart’s content! Ideal for blogging. Use the upper part of the browser window for writing, the below part for browsing through the (re)sources. Although alt+tab and/or ctrl+tab work fine too. Let’s just call it lazyness. *grins*

Sexgen mystery ft. Google Analytics
August 10, 2007 11:57 pm
I already mentioned on the BlogHer conference that a lot of my blog’s traffic comes from Google and other search enginges. But this *points at the Google Analytics composite* is even for me a lot of hits for only two keywords: 266 from sexgen and 263 from sexgen platinum in one day. And almost all those people did not leave the blog immediately. The same trend seems to continue today: HitTail - which I only installed recently - shows a total of 451 hits for ’sexgen’ and 400 hits for ’sexgen platinum’.
At first I thought it was just some sort of mistake by Google HQ. But then the hits wouldn’t be coming from 48 different regions - California, Texas and Florida on top? So, what happened?!
- I - severely - underestimated ranking good in Google for sex related Second Life keywords.
- Some RL USA news thingie wrote a story about Stroker Serpentine’s SexGen bed and non-Second Life people got really curious.
Betting my L$ on option number 2, I’m very curious what news thingie wrote what kind of news. =)

Blogtools: HitTail and Authorati
July 31, 2007 5:42 pmJust when my loyal Analytics were down, I got to urge to check them. I guess that is a normal phenomenom, you want most what you don’t have. And at that moment it was Google Analytics numbers. *grins* So I needed destraction. Hmmm. Testing some new stuff that seems neat most of the time works!
So I decided to create an account at both HitTail and Authorati and to see what they can and can not do. Out of the two right now I think HitTail is the most useful to this blog, but time will tell. These are the first test results and a short review of what HitTail and Authorati do/promise to do. The blogtools I often use were allready mentioned in Blogger tools, also for SL Bloggers.
HitTail.com
HitTail.com (basic, which is free) promises to reveal in real-time the least utilized, most promising keywords hidden in the Long Tail of your natural search results. We present these terms to you as suggestions that when acted on can boost the natural search results of your site. It’s that simple.
Basically, they take the ‘long tail’ (less common search queries which lead to your site) and suggest keywords for you to blog about based on that ‘long tail’ and a - only god and the hittail people know which - algorithm.
I like the idea, because indeed, I was already longtime thinking of answering some ‘often posed questions which lead to my site but aren’t actually answered on this site’ - Google search queries which I see through Google Analytics - but was to lazy to sort them out. HitTail makes that job more easy.
What did HitTail index for VintFalken.com (after +- 36 hours)?
| Top 10 keywords are 16.0% of all your search traffic. Long tail keywords are 84.0% of all your search traffic. Total unique keywords collected: 141 |
What does HitTail suggest I should blog about?
- age play (Nah. It’s not gone because of the Linden ban anyway. Just a bit more ‘underground’.)
- second life templates (Maybe I should create a better template for the SL Bikini project. I do know more about bikini lines now.)
- second life multiple avatars free (I’m not going to make a complete avie. Although Storm Thunders has an interesting idea on that! Hear him out!)
- neko in second life (That’s me! Almost full time now. ;))
- free clothes (Reminds me to finish the ‘Cross’ outfit.)
- second life building skyboxes (Maybe refer them to Tiana Meriman?)
- photoshop blur tutorial (Wow. I’m sure there are better non-SL related tutorials on that than the ones I wrote.)
- second life create skin (Well. I was planning to create a skin that actually matches my RL head. Might as well document that on vintfalken.com.)
Vint’s temporary judgement:
Neat to check on once in a while when I’m out of ‘to blog about’. Although with the amount of things in Second Life to blog about, that will be nowhere soon. Or should I aim for more Google hits? (Search engines are already responsible for about 50% of my blog traffic.)
Authorati
What does Authorati promises? Authorati is a portable ratings service that allows readers to rate your blog posts. In addition, the tags you specify are assigned an authority rating which helps build your reputation and visibility online.
In Vintish Authorati is a way to tag & judge on a blogpost’s content - opposed to technorati, which just tags. It could also help to get an ‘autority’ ranking on certain topics (they do have an ‘authority badge’ to display on your blog). Veyron, strippers for you? Readers (which have an Authorati account?) can easily vote on if your post matches the tags you added to it and judge your authority on those and your main blog tags.
If you are using FeedBurner’s FeedFlare’s - as I do - it’s easy to implement Authorati in your blogposts. If not, you will need to go through some more hassle.
For VintFalken.com, the first problem I occured was the question ‘What are the topics you predominatly blog about?‘ As you can see on my authorati profile, I chose ’second life’, ‘metaverse’, ‘3d world’, ‘avatar behaviour’, ‘SL photography’, ‘SLex’, ‘SL Security’, ‘RL/SL Crossover’ (change to mixed media?), ‘SL Blogs’, ‘SL Politics’ and ‘SL Art’. I sort of am not very happy with those, so if anybody has any better suggestions… .
Vint’s temporary judgement:
I’m mainly curious if anybody will actually vote and how they will vote. Besides maybe some on SL Photography, I do not claim to have any authority. For seeing any benefits of using this site, I haven’t explored it enough yet. I’m wondering, though, if Metaversed, 3pointD, VTOR, SecondLifeInsider, the Second Life Herald and such are going to ‘hunt’ for authority on Second Life. And Zoe on Steampunk? ;)

SL4B ‘Artist’s statement’ Audio File
June 19, 2007 1:56 pmOk, this is finished:
Ignore the birds and bees wind, I urgently needed to work on my tan.
Still to do before… *swearword* tomorrow:
- Find out how an object can offer/ask to open a web page when clicked upon. (rephrased: learn LSL *grins*)
- Create textures (Myg’s wall, SLelections poles, border Vint/Arteer, floor, manual for the FlickrViewer, top and side of the walls, ‘click here to open vintfalken.com’ texture, …).
- Add SLelection posters into viewers at the SLelection HQ at the SL04 sim.
- Select FlickrViewer pictures and put them in the FlickrViewer set. (+ picture of Kris and I)
- Try to make some things a bit more low-prim.
- … (I’m sure I forgot about some stuff right now).

SL Blogpile 1.0
May 7, 2007 3:11 pm
I trust on the others to do some sort of report on this as I can’t remember all that happened, but I’ll share this: the rumour goes we’ll be having a hawt male neko stripper over next time. Thanks again to our great host Zoe, who is continiously doing a lot of effort to bring the SL blogosphere closer together!
I’ve highlighted in this picture: Veyron ran out of clothes to wear? Who was Sherperz? The blogpile! ;)
But, where were Shockwave, Myg and Alexander, Melissa, Codie, Bella, Dolmere, Gaynor,… and last but not least: Wrath?!

Vint with camera
4:56 am
The AvaStar - Convention Center
Still, I find it a bit strange that the AvaStar is using a camera to depict what they do in SL.
The only link with their weekly magazine - which could use some more work still, where SL photography is concerned - that I can imagine is that the camera is a wink towards those RL paparazzi. And if that is what they mend to do, they forgot to put on a superzoom. ;)

The SL Bikini Project
May 2, 2007 10:09 am
Does this need any more explenation: The SL Bikini Project or ‘Showing Second Life’s Citizen’s Diversity Through or In Bikini’s’?
If yes, it al started here when Veyron stated ‘Maybe we need to do flags of the world on bikini’s…’.
Feel free to participate: on the project page you can find a Photoshop template to make your own bikini or you can go on a in-world shopping spree.

Shorties on Voice, MyBloglog, Flickr, Tiessa, …
April 18, 2007 3:27 pm-
SLforum.be could use some more visitors and forum activity. Flemish avies - and maybe the Dutch too, that is, if they behave - are very much welcomed on this Flemish SecondLife forum. As I felt like doing something crazy when registering back in the days, I left the space out of ‘Vint Falken’ for my username there: VintFalken it is. ;)
-
Search.sheeplabs.com is now (in beta) what Google is to First Life, as they ’spider’ (or whatever you call that in SL) all public sims regularely and list all the objects markt as ‘for sale’. Let’s say we want a Luger or all objects on sale owned by Vint Falken? Yes, ego-surfing is allowed. Do tell me if something strange turns up? Lordfly Digeridoo’s ‘Sheep Search Rapeocide Fascist Tekno-Orgy’ blogpost gives you a good idea of the pro’s and con’s. For some maybe this is the only thing that matters, you can easily prevent the items you own being listed: just Opt-Out. You’re still fucked if you build let’s say a Celine Dion statue and somebody puts it on sale without opting-out. We’ll all know you have no music taste whatsoever! ^^ Btw: did you know SecondLife has it’s own yellow pages?
-
Maybe this can prevent voice in SL ruining our economy: software voice changing stuff that can do male to female and a hardware voice changing tool. Hmmm, didn’t test any of them, but don’t be suprised if you soon hear a male Vint on the grid! ;) Ow, and history has learned us that castration works too.

A special Flickr group for ‘Shots of everything going wrong in SecondLife. Unrezzable avatars and objects, “ruthed” avatars, wheapon attacks, spam attacks, sparked prims, messed up attachments, and the list must go on!’? Finally, SecondLife Oddities was born. The proud single-mom: CodeBastard Redgrave. Amongst my favorites in the oddities-pool: Looker Lumet ruthed (I guess he’ll have to wait ’till the 25th now, as the update of the 1.14 client was postponed. All *purrr*, please! :d), Marquez Tone looking handsome as ever and overall winner: Arahan Claveau’s T-shirt Glitch the misprinted texture itself sums up the situation nicely: ‘Region Unavailable’, ‘Damn SL’, ‘DAMN U SL!’ ‘The need to sort it out’ ‘Morons’. I’d even volunteer to wear that T-shirt! :d
-
Tiessa has a new chapter posted on her - awesome - blog: Would you dance with me? (See Tiessa, I didn’t use ‘bimbo’, ‘mistress’ or ‘bdsm’ to link to you. I’m a good girl now, no? ;))
-
You can actually add your flickr stream as a blog to mybloglog.com. Nice! Does that mean I’m getting (basic) statistics on that one too now? *Purrrs*
And a bit about me and the blog:
-
Would anybody be interested in receiving a notification e-mail when a new blogpost is posted and the ability to subscribe to certain posts so you get notified when new comments are made? Or do we all know about co.comments and feedreaders? If interested, say so, and the necessary wordpress plugins will be added. ;)
-
A lot of people told me to update my ‘About’ page and I agree it needs some changes, but I don’t know what to put there. Any suggestions? (Humor is allowed here, but do know that although my footsize is 0 most of the time, my tows are easily stepped upon! ;)
-
Recently when logging in to my second life, SL tells me that I have to much IM’s waiting and they are capped off. So until I get a spam-protected contact form working, the safest way to contact me is to drop an e-mail at info at thisdomain dot com. *look at the url bar in your browser* :p

MyBlogLog and Recent Comments
April 16, 2007 9:55 amThe 5 most recent comments are now visible in the sidebar on the right. I think I want them justified but am to lazy to try and attempt changing css properties. Hmmm. Well, whatever.
Comments now come with avie-pictures. Gravatars? No thank you! The plugin MBLA uses your MyBlogLog profile picture to put next to the comment. That is, if you have a profile at MyBlogLog. So to avoid looking like an avie with midnight view on on a bad-rez-day you have to hop over to MyBlogLog and sign up. And that way I can check if it’s actually working, because at the moment my picture is the only one showing. :D
Other things that come with the free version of MyBlogLog: recent readers, limited analytics (top-10 referrers, content and outgoing clicks), site communities, …
