Comparison on Linden Dollars Exchange rates
November 25, 2007 2:15 amWell, I am not a financial genius. Frankly, if I were, I would be playing the real life stock market in stead of Second Life. But sometimes it does not take a genius to figure out some numbers:
When I stumbled over Anshe Chung’s site, I saw she also sells and buys up Linden Dollars: Anshe generously offers me USD 320 for 100 000L$. Wow? Did inflation hit that hard? I assume L$ are suffering under the bad dollar exchanges rates too, but only 320 Real Life Dollars?! That’s an exchange rate of 312.5 L$ / USD! Quickly I went to check the LindeX and found that all was more or less normal. So Anshe Chung is just ripping everybody off? And is she doing that over IMVU credits too?
Anyway, I knew you could exchange L$ on SLexchange too and they also offer the ability to export those USD to first life. So I decided to compare. And guess what? Actually SLexchange - which is partially owned by Anshe - is ‘best buy‘ and ‘best sell‘. SLexchange is even cheaper then the official Linden exchange called LindeX. I though maybe the catch would be in the ‘export to RL money’ feature, but no, they match the LindeX there too. Strange, no?
* The last thing I wanted to know, was what the losses would be if you take 100 000 L$ out of SL, convert them to USD, not to export them to First Life money, but to just revert them into L$ again. All this on ‘best going rate’. Losses - the amount of RL money you need to put in extra to get 100 000 L$ again - are smallest on the SLexchange with a total loss of 12.33 USD. When you would use Anshe Chung’s exchange, those losses would amount up to 79.98 USD. That’s six times the cost of this on SLexchange!!!
Any major Linden Dollar to USD or Euro exchange services I’ve overlooked?
Sell Linden Dollars
| Service | sell L$ | buy USD | USD to RL fee |
| LindeX | 100 000 L$ | 350.91 USD | 1 USD (paypal) |
| SLexchange | 100 000 L$ | 353.56 USD | a maximum of $1.00 US (paypal) |
| Anshe Chung | 100 000 L$ | 320.00 USD | none? (paypal) |
Buy Linden Dollars
| Service | buy L$ | sell USD | Loss* |
| LindeX | 100 000 L$ | 376.24 USD | 25.33 USD loss |
| SLexchange | 100 000 L$ | 365.89 USD | 12.33 USD loss |
| Anshe Chung | 100 000 L$ | 399.98 USD | 79.98 USD loss |
Disclaimer: Information about the rates were queried with a maximum difference of five seconds between the different websites. Buy & Sell L$ transfers fee were accounted in the USD amount I listed. And as I said, I’m not a financial genius, and if you would suffer severe losses because of something I say here, you may whine in the comments here, but under no circumstances will I pay damages. ;)

My God, you’re retarded, Vint, and malicious and nasty, as usual, just adopting like a mindless robot the hate campaign against Anshe.
Look again. The reason why her rates look “different” is that she includes fees within it that the Lindens *do not* include. That’s why your “question mark” about PayPal is there. Go and calculate ALL the fees to transfer a Linden through the LindEx into Paypal through Linden Lab, look at ALL the fees, then look at what Anshe includes, and then print a correction. Read what is on her website.
Another great advantage of Anshe’s exchange, and why people use it even if it might be slightly less advantageous is that it comes into your account very quickly at PayPal, she doesn’t take “5 business days” like the Lindens.
What’s especially dumb about your hateful and ignorant article is that you don’t realize that Anshe is a major owner of Slexchange.com So here you are praising an exchange that you think gives a better deal, but in fact Anshe is a major owner there, so you can thank her for that.
Prokofy, I don’t think I follow you. Let’s look at what you said up there:
“Look again. The reason why her rates look “different” is that she includes fees within it that the Lindens *do not* include. That’s why your “question mark” about PayPal is there. OK, let’s do that for 100,000 Lindens:
We know the Paypal fee is USD $1 per transaction.
From the Second Life community page, we see that “Sellers of Linden Dollars pay a fee of 3.5% per transaction. Proceeds will be credited to your US$ account balance.”
So, if I try to sell L$100,000 at market, here’s what happens, as I read it.
(1 - .035) * 100,000 = L$96,500 go up for sale on the market.
At the current rates, that nets me (L$96,500 / (L$276/USD$1)) = USD $349.64. This is exactly what the tool on the Sell Lindens page gives as well.
Now we subtract out that dollar for Paypal, giving a net of $348.64 if we use the LindeX.
Yet Anshe still only gives USD $320 for that same L$100,000. That’s a loss of USD$28.64, which is a lot to pay for the expedited processing that Anshe offers according to your comment.
So now that all the fees are included, how does that make Anshe’s rates better?
Anshe Chung is a major rip off merchant… We used to ‘rent’ land from her and when we couldn’t sell it, we sold it back to them for 50% of it’s value and THEN they decided that they wanted the rent too even though we had a PayPal account set up to handle it, but they’d not informed us of the switch from automated subscription billing to manual, so I think they were just being sneaky and underhanded… we had well over L$100,000 worth of land and walked away with a fraction of that in our pockets.
Scandalous!!! I will never deal with her or her company again. It’s a pity she owns part of SLExchange too… :(
Prok, I did include all fees, as I already subtracted or added the buy and sell fees to the respectively sell USD and buy USD amounts. So tell me, what fees did I miss? ALL fees were included. I’ll add that to the disclaimer, as I forgot to mention that.
Prok: What’s especially dumb about your hateful and ignorant article is that you don’t realize that Anshe is a major owner of Slexchange.com
And where exactly did I forget to mention that Anshe Chung is a major owner of SLexchange? I think it would have belonged in this paragraph, no?
Actually SLexchange - which is partially owned by Anshe - is ‘best buy‘ and ‘best sell‘. SLexchange is even cheaper then the official Linden exchange called LindeX.
Ow… wait! It’s there! And yes, I will still use the LindeX over SLexchange, just because I love Anshe that much. =)
I hope you don’t mind me whitening out your comment again? Especially because you called me retarded because of two errors you think you noticed that I did not make. You’re really getting pathetic if you need to start making up things to rant about.
I was just curious if you had considered using any of the “bank” exchange services like SLCapEx.com, Apez.biz, or AnCapEx.net.
I think it would be interesting to see how they stack up against LindeX, SLX, and Anshe.
What did Vint say?
Using Anshe’s service costs more.
What did Prokofy say?
Using Anshe’s service costs more. [OK the actual quote was …” even if it might be slightly less advantageous”…]
So what is Prokofy’s point other than: ‘I hate you Vint’?
What a strange reply that was.
Most of the people I’ve talked to use the Lindex or SLExchange. I’m guessing that Ansche has it simply to round out their offering of services. Some customers don’t look for the best deal, they’d rather deal with one person/company for everything. *shrug*
And for your entertainment: http://zapatopi.net/afdb/
Oh Anshe was more ambitious than just rounding her offer. She wanted to make a stock exchange for SL, IMVU and Entropia. As we can see now one can only change micro-currencies to RL money, but not, let’s say, lindens for credits. I guess that interest was not huge for that kind of service.
Try http://www.ELDEXchange.eu
Auwch, it seems those ELDEXchange people are even more expensive as it comes to buying L$?
100000LS would cost 312 EUR which is 464USD!!!
Selling 1000000LS would get you 250 EUR which is 371 USD. Did not check if there are any processing to RL bank account/paypall fees though.
So I can buy 100000L$ for 365.89 USD at SLexchange
and sell them for 371USD to ELDEX
with 5.11USD per 100000 profit.
That is 1.4%. Not worth the effort of course. Except if one doesn’t want to ruin ELDEX.
Well, a friend from Spain uses them frequently, as they are the cheapest option down there.
Um, you did make errors though, hon.
1. While seemingly noting that Anshe was partial owner of Slexchange.com, you still tried to portray Anshe’s own site as somehow a rip-off, and the Slexchange.com as not a rip-off, which is laughable, given she is a major owner of Slexchange.com
2. I didn’t say Anshe’s rates were *better*; it’s somewhat worse but not as bad as you imply. I said it was misleading to only post a plain rate of X dollars/X Lindens as if that is the final rate, when in fact Linden and Paypal both add fees. When Anshe presents her information on her website, it includes the fees. And again, what I said was that she was very fast — there was no 5-7 day wait as with Linden, but often within 24 hours.
3. Once again, it’s not about “I hate you Vint,” it’s about Vint’s tendentious, misleading commentary which is *hateful itself*. She implied there was something “wrong” and even “evil” about Anshe somehow “bilking people” without explaining that she *includes* the fees; she also failed to mention that she does everything much faster; and finally, she failed to draw the conclusion that if Anshe is so “awful,” how as she, as a major owner of Slexchange.com, able to suddenly become “good” when in that mode?
4. Guardian, it looks like you are not getting the point, either.
Here’s what Vint said about the Lindex in her chart:
LindeX 100 000 L$ 376.24 USD 25.33 USD loss
Here’s what you said about the same Lindex:
Now we subtract out that dollar for Paypal, giving a net of $348.64 if we use the LindeX
Here’s what Vint said, in a totally twisted logic:
“the amount of RL money you need to put in extra to get 100 000 L$ again ”
Um, huh? Why do you calculate exchange rates by the round trip? Everyone knows that it is precisely the cost of the round trip that makes playing the LindEx fairly pointless.
These comparisons should be made merely on the actual rate for purchase or the actual rate for sale, and what it really costs you.
Anshe uses mass-pay and saves people the fees of PayPal itself in receiving the cashout.
You have to calculate the fees for cashing out, pure and simple, all the way — and these can be .04 percent by PayPal, depending on what country you live in, whether you have the merchant account status, etc.
Therefore, re: “So tell me, what fees did I miss? ALL fees were included. I’ll add that to the disclaimer, as I forgot to mention that.” — there is the fee of PayPal itself in receiving something from Linden Lab.
Re:
>Anshe Chung is a major rip off merchant… We used to ‘rent’ land from her and when we couldn’t sell it, we sold it back to them for 50% of it’s value
Um, well, that’s life. Why would a land dealer be required to buy back your land from you at the same rate you paid? Huh? Do you realize this is a free market, and not socialism? In real life, do you think there is some kind of socialist guarantee that your land should be bought back? Be thankful she even pays 50 percent. It could just sit there and sell at whatever the market would pay, which might be $2/m or less.
The contract in the covenant implies no such same-rate buy-back policy whatsoever. It explains that you cannot expect to get such a thing, in fact. So why the fussing and fuming?
>and THEN they decided that they wanted the rent too even though we had a PayPal account set up to handle it, but they’d not informed us of the switch from automated subscription billing to manual
That’s patently retarded. Indeed they have informed people in the group over and over again, ad nauseum, with frequent notices and constant explanations. And it is up to you, when installing a recurring PayPal subscription, to yourself cancel it and not wait for ACS to cancel it — indeed they cannot cancel your recurring billing in a subscription.
>, so I think they were just being sneaky and underhanded… we had well over L$100,000 worth of land and walked away with a fraction of that in our pockets.
There’s hardly anything sneaky about a) keeping to the terms of the covenant which is your lease, which apparently you failed to read and grasp and b) buying back your land at 50 percent. Other landlords don’t even feel that obligation.
This is the part of your comment I was working with: “Go and calculate ALL the fees to transfer a Linden through the LindEx into Paypal through Linden Lab, look at ALL the fees, then look at what Anshe includes, and then print a correction. Read what is on her website.”
I did that. I leave the rest of the (flame-filled) argument to you two.
Thx, but no thx, Guardian. Prok’s all yours. You may have it. Debating it is rather useless, as it does not read/listen to people’s arguments.
Although… one, last try.
you still tried to portray Anshe’s own site as somehow a rip-off, and the Slexchange.com as not a rip-off, which is laughable, given she is a major owner of Slexchange.com
No it’s not. If you have two companies selling the exact same product: one very expensive and one normal, then the one selling the product expensive is a rip-off. Regardless who the shareholders are.
LOL, what a thread! Oh, hate mongering is a foolish thing.
Prok, someone might be inclined to listen to you if you stopped calling people hateful, dumb and ignorant.
It is true that there is no contract for Anshe to buy land at a fair price. That means “buyer beware”.
– Shoshana
I think you forgot one that is cheaper in selling lindens.
