Confirming rumours, it’s a boy.. errr… Acer ;)

July 6, 2008 12:40 am

Confirming rumours... Yeey! As I already plurked - yeah, Vint is to be found on Plurk lately - and listened around with a few peepz - do you foresee any SL-problems with this baby - there is a new addition to the Vint-family: Mao and Deng got a little brother. Although he’s officially named Acer Aspire 8920G (934G64BN) we’re still thinking of a name that fits the family tradition better. Naming suggestions are welcome.

Acer Aspire 8920G Specs

It’s a healthy baby, with a good - although above average - weight, black body and not to noisy (but sounds great when you tell it to make noise - for a laptop, that is). More specific: NVIDIA® GeForce® 9650M-GS, Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T9300 (2.5GHz/FSB: 800MHz/6MB L2 cache), 4GB DDR II RAM, 640GB HDD (2x 320GB) and the rest of usual features that come with such beings. The only icky thing is the CineDash Media Console, which imho is totally unnecessary (maybe it can be removed without to much problems, like the appendix?) It comes with a clean Vista install (no ‘hey, try this out, it’s shareware crap thanks to nice the PC guys from the shop) which is already way less scary now I found the way to revert it to ‘old, classic windows look’. :d

It’s strange how such a thing can give you a whole new look on virtual life. From 4:3 aspect ratio to almost 2:1 surely needs a while to get used to. (Yeah, I could not help myself. First thing I did was to check how Greenies Lawn looked on this one, and how my fps was doing.)

Software. Errr. Suggestions welcome.

Now the thing is, what to teach it in his first weeks:

* = He can already do that.
? = ‘no idea’ or ‘would this be a good idea?’

  1. Surfing: Firefox*, Opera, Firefox plugins
  2. Anti-virus: Avast
  3. Firewall: pffff. not needed?
  4. Zipping/unzipping: 7-Zip
  5. E-mail: Thunderbird
  6. FTP: FileZilla
  7. Graphics: Adobe stuff, GIMP, Adobe Reader*, Wacom drivers
  8. Torrent: ?
  9. 3D software: DAZ?, Blender (not that I’m good with it)
  10. Second Life: Second Life RC Client*, shadow branch test files, avpainter, clothingpreview, qanimator, ?
  11. Feed Reader: ? (might go web based)
  12. General comfort: Notepad++ *
  13. Office: OpenOffice
  14. IM/chat: Skype, ICQ, MSN, mIRC
  15. Capture audio: Audacity
  16. Capture video/screen: any good alternatives for Frapps?
  17. Fun & Various: Bryce, PacketGarden, Twinity viewer, ExifViewer, AMP Font Viewer, camera drivers, Spore Creature Creator (maybe), …
  18. Music playback: ? (probably WinAmp)

Did I forget any important stuff a PC should be able to do?

What won’t make it on the new PC: lot’s of useless Intel programs, Microsoft Office, Flickr Uploader, _anything_ CoffeeCup, Nero 7, Corel Painter (unless I buy a new Wacom someday, but never actually used it), Google Video Player, AC3D, QuarkXpress, Flock, Google Earth, Flux Player, Pownce client, HentaII3D, Plopp, meet-me (never worked), AC3D, … .

Fingerprint, a bit ‘over the top’?

A final questions, that ‘fingerprint identification’ that comes with almost every laptop nowadays, does anybody use that? Is it extra safe? And what if you loose your finger? Seems kinda silly and ‘unnecessary luxury?’ (ok, so is the subwoofer in the laptop and some other things, but still. :d)

Great configuration, Vint! :-D And in suggestions:

1. Surfing: Safari for Windows
11. Feed Reader: Google Reader (I’ve moved from Brief [Firefox extension] to it. It wasn’t all “sunshine-and-butterfiles” due to lack of native app speed, but I got used to it later and found it handy when I miss Engadget for a few days, as they post a ton per day and after 1-2 days, the entire RSS feed is replaced so it’s a good thing Google Reader updates quarter-hourly. :-D)
17. Fun & Various: Source mods? (user-created games/levels) Just go to here to use the special offer for Nvidia members to get some free Source-powered mini-games so you could get the engine, and then search the web or contact me for some “mods”. :-)
18. Music Playback: iTunes? :-D

And finally: Name: Ace? xD

Approved, sir! =)

Surfing FireFox is standard. Internet Explorer I keep because there are still websites that only do IE. I’ll consider safari. Opera I mainly use to ‘test on another browser.’ ;)

feedreader Hmm Google Reader ok? I actually like having a software one in stead of webbased, but don’t look forward to the need to have them synchronized on both pc’s all the time. And I dunno if I like _all_ my stuff over at Google. For now they are doing ok, but they already know that much about me. :d

Source Mods Never heard off. And for playing games, I limit myself to SL, PS ;) and other virtual worlds to try out. Oh, and the typewriter back then. :d And some(times alot) RL table soccer (foosball). me not gamer girl. :D (although Travian was a blast!)

itunes maybe. if I get an iPhone one day. :d until then, I like the program Tim runs on linux, but that’s errr.. linux. will probably be just winamp or so. :/

@Vint:

Google Reader: If you’ll use Firefox, be sure to install Stylish, and that way you *LOLCAT mode ON* can haz sknd ggl rdr n othr sknd wb aps n sits! *LOLCAT mode OFF*. ;-)

Source Mods: I got an example. The amazing short-yet-fun-to-play-over-and-over total-conversion RPG mod, Eclipse! (screenshot)

3. Firewall: ZoneAlarm
7. Graphics: Foxit PDF Reader (Quite a bit less weighty than Adobe’s reader)
8. Torrent: uTorrent
11. Feed Reader: Sage extension for Firefox
18. Music playback: Songbird (Based on Firefox :D)

re the fingerprint question: Usually those finger print scanners are horribly insecure and are generally just a waste of your time. I’d prefer to keep my logins password-based so if I lose all my fingers I could still type it with my nose if need-be :P

I’ve one of these machines and on the whole its pretty good. There are a couple of minor points.

Although it does have 4gig you’ll only get to use 3 gig the other one seems to be bound up with the graphics card.

with regard to SL it runs it beautifully, its the first machine i’ve had that will work reliably with all the graphics settings maxed out. On the down side you have to wait for acer update the nvidia drivers and so far they havent. I’ve had a couple of crashes caused by the displa drivers.

the cinedash media console is a real pain in the arse and pointless. I’m always accidentally touching the controls with my left little finger when typing and i drives me nuts bringing windows up and skipping tracks.

on the whole its a great machine and great for SL but it does have its annoyances that can make living with it difficult.

cheers

Aldo

Feedreader: I’m quite happy with NewsGator’s FeedDemon, which is free these days. They have a web interface as well, meaning you can either check online or use the installed client. Dislaimer: I haven’t used the online version much, don’t know how good it is.

Well, if you are staying on windows….

1. Surfing: Firefox
3. Firewall: welll… you need one
8. Torrent: azureus
9. 3D software: Blender (you’ll get a grip with it, give it a chance), how about educational edition of Maya?
13. Office: OpenOffice and , if your text needs are reasonable, abiword, quick, laight, easy.
14. IM/chat: Skype and Trillian or Pidguin (both are multi-protocol)
15. Capture audio: Audacity
16. Capture video/screen: any good alternatives for Frapps?
18. Music playback: WinAmp for sure

Wow, lot’s of suggestions here.

Mr Aldo Zond, I last night discovered that although my SL looks kick ass (and I know I need to tweek Nvidia’s native settings still, was the same with the card I so generously got from Miss Supercharge) I can’t snapshot it!. Upload snapshot goes fine, but when I want to save to disk it just crashes. And printscreen just don’t cut it for me most of the time! ;) Did you experience this too? Any solutions? Miss Veyron suggested updating the drivers, but as you say you have to wait for acer update the nvidia drivers and so far they havent, I fear. And tremble. And cry. *looks at you with hope, hope you encountered the same and solved it*

For although it does have 4gig you’ll only get to use 3 gig the other one seems to be bound up with the graphics card. I luckily got an advance notice. ;)

For the chat, I’ve tried Trillian and heard of Pidguin. I want to minimise being online on ICQ & MSN though, just need them in case. :d So no real need for a ‘one client fits all’. (Unless they can do Skype better than Skype does, eg. not delivering messages after 10 hours only or showing someone offline when they are on.)

Sered, newsgator feeddemon sounds interesting, as it then indeed synchronises between the two. This will also be an excellent occasion to clean out (and add to) my feed collection.

Torrent: lot’s of options here. Until now I held on to BitTorrent. Curious bout the others. I guess nobody knows an alternative for Frapps?

And Soraya, yes, I totally agree with usually those finger print scanners are horribly insecure and are generally just a waste of your time. I’d prefer to keep my logins password-based so if I lose all my fingers I could still type it with my nose if need-be :P My worst fear is not somebody else logging in, but me locking myself out! :d

Vint, no need to wait for Acer, just head on to nvidia.com and download the latest ForceWare drivers. :-)

Alex, you’re absolutely right. She should. :-D

Aldo, true, as the GPU in it has TurboCache, which, “steals” up to 1GB of RAM as VRAM. It’s not a feature I like, made me kick my PC like crazy and afterwards when I upgraded the GPU, it worked beautifully. (AKA TurboCache made my 3.80Ghz Dual-core PC work like a 500Mhz PC.)

Dandellion, one sweet replacement i’m using which works greatly with SL, is CamStudio. Google it, and download it. It’s a sweet solution for tutorials in SL, Windows, and everything which appears on your screen. Look on Torley’s YouTube videos, some of ‘em use CamStudio. :-)

Congrats, Vint! Hope the delivery went well, that looks… painful…

FTP: Try the firefox plugin FireFTP, I love it, and it works pretty well. Doesn’t do secure FTP (sftp) yet though, and I wish it would… still, it’s pretty useful.

Firewall: I agree, you want one. If you have a router with a firewall — and it’s configured well — then you can probably breathe easier, but I wouldn’t trust Windows to protect itself. At all.

Google Reader: another vote from me, it’s how I keep up with you :)

IM: I’m a fan of Pidgin, because I have friends on MSN and Yahoo, I love it. Also because it works on my Linux machines.

Fingerprint ID: I wouldn’t trust it either.

Have fun!

Regarding the fingerprint reader:

Well, today I was at my local (not so local, 20-30 minutes away by car/bus. :-S) computer/PDA store Handy, and I can safely say the fingerprint ID is pretty nice. Just slide your finger across and the password goes in and the computer hits “Login”/”Submit”/”Register”. If I ever get one of those (thought of buying one by Microsoft once), I think i’ll be using it immediately. It’s nice for those who use multiple passwords, though I keep a set of only about 3-4 passwords, mainly the 1st one for 95% of my services. *Gasp!* Still, it’s pretty nice and easy. And the configuration wizard was easy, just take 4 samples and you’re done! :-D
