Daniel on the ‘ass’ and ‘Lolita’.

July 5, 2007 2:11 pm

Laetizia Coronet dropped by at Daniel Linden’s office hours to aks about ‘Lolita’ being blocked from search and ‘ass’ from ‘pick your avie’s first name’. Daniel was vague/clueless/…, read it for yourself. Laetizia writes it down better then I ever could when she says:

In an international environment there’s no such thing as an offensive name. There’s a place in Iraq named Kut - meaning cunt in Dutch. There’s an airport near Zurich, Switzerland, named Kloten - a rude word for testicles in Dutch. An angry Frenchman might call you a con, but in Italian and Spanish that’s a common preposition (’with’) and in English it means a lot of things, but it’s not a rude word. There are many more examples like this.

Any other ‘real’ first names with ‘ass’ in them that we missed up to now? I can only think as Crass as last name. We allready had ‘Cassandra’, ‘Massimo’ and ‘Massimiliano’.

Update: Laetizia tested Event Lisitings and Classifieds on taking or not taking ‘Lolita’.

I was planning to go to that Office Visit but didn’t because of the rolling restart. Sorry I missed it.

Ah well, I think Laetizia did a great job at representing ‘concerned residents’. ;)

Now, how about a vietnamese name “Huy” ?

They should definitely ban it too! :-)

Thanks for the nice words :) How about the common last name for South African black people, ‘Sithole’? Maybe only Dutch speakers see the link because of ‘zitvlak’… Talking about South Africa, they had a minister of Justice there called ‘Pik’ Botha. A ‘pik’ is just another ‘Huy’ ;).

ah, which reminds me, in an ancient ‘polyglot’ HTML chatroom I frequented you couldn’t write ’shit’. That gave some strange problems too - the one example I remember is that of a large company called ‘Matsushita’.

Van De Cloot, Neuckermans,… “rude” words in Dutch/Flemish, but , on the other hand, “common” and accepted family names in the same flemish speaking part of Belgium…

so, if we are not offended by these names in RL, why should we be in SL, where most peoples tolerance limits are stretched far beyond the onces they live by in RL.. ?

I think we all are convinced of that, having “rude” names in RL, which are normal, and the stupidity of Linden to have blocked “ass” from the search.
It is Linden Lab who we should convince, not the other readers on this blog. There are enough examples in RL to endorse our point of view, we can go on like this forever.:)

Aha… euhm.. Looker, and what is the plan of action you have for us? *grins*

If you want to keep throwing with examples, be my guest, there are plenty.

Actually, finding the examples is fun. (And I’ve even learned some new words.)

But as I said in the former comment, if you have a better plan of action then talking to Lindens during their office hours and mentioning it as a ‘bug’ on Jira, shoot… =d

‘Shoot’ eh? I have a push gun somewhere, maybe we can blast Lindens out of their own office hours? ;)

I think that would lead to an AR that would actually be followed up. *grins*
