Der Untergang is, obviously, a German movie. And a respected one at that; I have only read positive reviews, including reviews from the German press. This movie definitely isn’t banned in Germany.

As far as I know, it’s the selling of Nazi paraphernalia that’s banned on ebay etcetera, because most of the market for those goods is with the neonazis. Youtube clips that spread a positive message about nazis are probably banned as well, but probably on a case by case basis.

Maybe there’s copyrights involved? They did after all take a clip from a copyrighted German movie. But that would be nitpicking, wouldn’t it..

Conclusion: Countries still don’t know how to handle their history - geeh, make the subject ‘discussable’ instead of just banning everything - and thank god for proxies? ;)

I do know that other websites, like eBay and Google, have had to put in ‘Nazi’ filters to please the German government. Perhaps it’s on a case by case basis and someone complained to YouTube about it and they quickly censored it. Even worse would be YouTube preemptively censoring it because they thought someone from those countries would complain.

For Belgium I don’t know, for the Netherlands I know both Soviet and Third Reich WWII insignia are forbidden. (That is, wearing them on the street.)

But in the Netherlands recently a film about WWII was made (it was even promoted with a SL casting for the lead role, in SL then) and as they can’t make a movie on WWII without Germans (ah well, not that movie), I don’t think it counts for films and such too. And as far as I know, you can get Axis of Allies in Germany as well as in France. ;)

It may be a Germany and France limitation, where, I believe, it is illegal to display Nazi paraphernalia, the swastika, or other things ’sympathetic’ to Nazi Germany.

Maybe the Netherlands, Belgium, etc. have more sane free speech laws.

This is really confusing. As far as I know, the IP is to blame. If Germans and the French may not see this, why am I, who lives inbetween those two countries - allowed to see this. So it’s not a Euro-thing.
