Freebie and other poses: Copy or Trans?
July 21, 2007 5:01 am
When playing around with Qavimator, I’ve created a - still small - collection of poses that I want to distribute as freebie. Opposed to all those generous people that say ‘Second Life community, this is now yours, do with it as you please’, I’d like to keep some control over how the poses I’ve made spread on the grid. Why?
- I can’t stand people that make money out of selling freebies.
- It would be nice if the people that like the poses come and say ‘Hi!’ at this blog. Well, and those why dislike them can come and say how to improve. ;)
- Keeping track of SLexchange/SLboutique/MetaMart and account history gives me a good idea of what people like and do like.
So, what’s the way to go the asset permissions to go with? Make them Copy / No-mod / No-trans or make them No-copy / No-mod / Trans? Or is there a better solution that I’ve overlooked?
Iris Ophelia has a poll on the question on the Ophelia Drowns blog: What permissions do you prefer having on modelling poses?
Personally I would tend to go for ‘Copy / No-mod / No-trans‘ as that would mean you can use them for instance in an AO, a posestand and a poseball at the same time, without being forced to move it in and out all the time. If you want a model to use them, you just rezz either the posestand or the poseball. Right?

Yep, I’d go with copy/no mod/no trans as a way to keep people from selling them. It’s useful for the individual av, but they have to get it from whatever/wherever you designate as the source.
I’m with Myg on that. You keep control on where they come from and the owner can use them several times, which for me would mean in my AO as well as in the Pandora Poser and/or Pandora HUD and maybe Mystitool :)
I’d agree that copy/no-mod/no-trans is the best if you want the people to get them from a single source.
And you might charge people a nominal fee of, say, L50-L100, for no-copy/no-mod/trans (per animation)- this way even if they resell it, you will benefit from it (and it would provide a natural barrier against reselling in the first place, imho).
Definitely for animations go with copy but no-trans. Resetting a borked animation HUD like HUDDLES with no-copy animations is *tedious*. Animations I use all the time I love to have copy versions so I can flip between different controllers/HUDS with different avvies.
I can appreciate that you don’t want the work you’ve given away simply resold, but if you make them nocopy/notrans, you also keep anyone from using your poses in some item that might possibly contribute to SL. Whether they sell it for money, or simply give it away, you’ve closed the door on that chance.
How about, clearly label them in the description as FREE POSES, NOT FOR DIRECT RESALE and make them nomod/copy/trans? That way, anyone who DOES try to simply resell them without adding to their value, is at least clearly in the wrong, for anyone to see.
Rejeanne: I think this can be treated by adding a notecard of something like follows: “If you would like to use these poses in your product, please get me a sample of it, and I could consider giving you the animations that are copyable/transferable.” ? This way the folks who are for quick money would not be inclined to ask even… and those who would do something useful - would not be limited ?
Copy, Copy, Copy, for animair thats the best and place them on SLX for people to get copies. The ones that like them in a product will ask. I promise you, I get those questions all the time, that also often like small changes in the animation.
Mine all all copy, mod, no trans, (sell them in poseballs) but none yet as freebie.
Nice people that ask might however get one for free :-)
