GMI poll: SL users want to avoid RL-reality
April 30, 2007 5:32 amGMI went and asked questions to 479 Second Live residents about marketing and branding. If you want to read the actual part about virtual consumer marketing and branding, go to their press release: ‘Latest GMI poll reveals Second Life’s potential for virtual consumer marketing and branding‘. I just figured these figures below are striking too, as I definitely belong to that group of 55% that watches TV less now (read: not at all anymore). ^^
The poll also revealed that many Second Life users go to the virtual world to avoid reality. Twenty-four percent of respondents claim they go to Second Life to escape real life, which they are not satisfied with, while 64 percent present themselves differently. Additional findings include:
- 45 percent give themselves a more attractive body
- 37 percent make themselves younger
- 23 percent give themselves a different nationality
- 55 percent watch less television since becoming active in Second Life
- 22 percent have more Second Life friends than real-life friends
- 29 percent feel Second Life interferes with their real-world social life
I wonder if they have asked about how many switched gender?
Via GigaOM, who also compares this with the Komjunity survey and does some other math. And for those who didn’t hear of it yet: the older Komjunity survey.
Edit: Yet another suvey about real life brands in SL that was published inbetween the Komjunity survey and the GMI poll that I’ve overlooked up to now: MTL Second Life Report. You can find a full transcript of it here. (Via SLcrew.be)

Yes to: More attractive body (though people irl say my body is fine), younger, watching less tv (also working on music less =P)
No to: Different nationality (Wait, is there a Neko country I don’t know about? ;-) ), more SL friends than IRL, SL interfering with RL.
Though there have been times when I’ve been tempted to ditch friends IRL to go on SL.
Yes to the following:
“watch less television since becoming active in Second Life”
“have more Second Life friends than real-life friends”
“feel Second Life interferes with their real-world social life”
and I would add…
“feel real-world interferes with their Second Life social life”
“give themselves a taller body with larger breasts”
“lose sleep remaining in Second Life too long at night”
