How to OpenSim DIY on Windows XP

January 4, 2009 7:16 pm

Fed up with Linden’s idea of “fair” Miss Zonja Capalini wrote out an easy-to-execute tutorial on Installing OpenSim on Windows XP with MySQL. This isn’t about how to login to an OpenSim, no, this is about running your very own grid!

The end result? Virtual land that you really, really, really own. And err… if I can do it.. well… most of you can. :) May I present to you - with an uptime of over an hour on a very old XP box - “Vintville”:

Vintville - OpenSim DIY result

A few additional bits of information:

Creating user accounts

When logging in with the super avatar created in Zonja’s Step #6, I ran into this “Could not authenticate your avatar.” Which is strange, as I triple-checked spelling. Ah well, I just created another user in the server console. This is how to:

  1. You have your “server console” (the Command Prompt Window) still open and will see: “Region <root> # :”.
  2. Type “create user <first> <last> <password> 1000 1000″ and press enter. (Example: “create user Vint Falken v1ntr4wks 1000 1000″.) (The “1000″ are X & Y locations, and a necessity when creating users for a standalone grid like ours.)
  3. Login with your client and use first & last name and the password set above.

Shutting down your OpenSim

In the same “server console” (command prompt window) type “shutdown”. Your OpenSim will automatically run ‘backup’. Important sentence: “[scene]: persisting changed objects”. This means next time you start your OpenSim, your objects laid out on your virtual land will still be there.

If then you want to close the command prompt window too, just type “exit” and press ENTER.

Restarting your OpenSim

Go to Start > Run. Type “cmd” and press ENTER. Type “cd c:\program files\opensim” and press ENTER. Type “opensim” and press ENTER. Give it some time to load. Startup with me takes 14 seconds. When you see “Region <root> # :” you’re fine to login again using your Second Life client. If all went well - and you used the ’shutdown’ command for turning it off, anything created previously will still be there.

How to see the uptime

Curious how long your sim is running already? Type “show uptime” and press enter.

Other fun (and possibly grid-breaking! ;)) system commands to play around with can be found in the OpenSimulator wiki.

Thanks for the coverage! :-) I’ll review your comments about my step 6, many thanks for that, and make the necessary corrections… but this will be later — I’ve just completed my first successful HyperGrid tp YAY! And I’d love to make a video of it before dinner!

Np. I figured “this cause” could use some graphics to go with it! ;) Also, I’m feeding planet.opensim.us, so hopefully, it will soon appear there. :)

Re: step #6 … I really believe I did everything correct, first name Vint last name Falken and then a new pass. I checked spelling over and over, but to no avail, I could not login using the Second Life client, the correct loginuri & even start page ( -loginuri http://127.0.0.1:9000/ -loginpage http://127.0.0.1:9000/?method=login ) but I kept getting that error message. The server console does show “[PARCEL]: Found master avatar Vint Falken [9247c51a-c86a-4ae0-b9a9-5d
4ee3b9908a]”, so I _know_ I exist. :D It’s kinda weird. (But the create new user account workaround work, and default seems to be set to all avatars having superpowers, so… nah. :d)

I don’t see how this is really worth the time to start your own SIM when those open source software are lacking out more than itself.

No working Inventory…
No working database, that could share with other users…
No working scripts…
and of course… it may be working but Physic Engine are sadly poor.

Not looking forward to waste my time trying to get friends onto some shit land. They’ll look at me and speak these ungodly words “This sucks, I’m going back.”

Nice Tutorial, but you don’t seem to understand such value that OpenSim don’t have. It’s either stupid or just too soon to release OpenSim to the public… they got a lot more work to do.

Awesome screen image. Never seen anything as dramatic as this with plain OpenSim. Really exciting to see lots of people getting interested in OpenSim and rolling up their sleeves.

Nacon, it’s almost Sunday evening, which means 75% chance at logins disabled, or at least: no working inventory, no working transactions, no working friend list, no working scripts, … . So this is exactly is good as trying to spend a Sunday in Second Life! ;)

But now serious, yes, of course it isn’t Second Life, but it is definitely a start. The “one step at a time” saying goes here too. If you don’t wish to waist time on it, that is your choice, but others are interested. :)

Exact info:

Second Life client says:
“Login failed. Could not authenticate your avatar. Please check your username and password, and check the grid if problems exist.”

Server console says:
Region (root) # :
[LOGIN BEGIN]: XMLRPC Received login request message from user ‘Vint’ ‘Falken’
[LOGIN]: XMLRPC Client is Second Life Release Candidate 1.22.2.104576, start location is home
[LOGIN]: Authenticating Vint Falken

Silence after that. status.vintville.com says it’s up though! ;)

@Nacon: Wait. In one day of work I’ve migrated to opensim 65% of the stuff some customers of mine, an educator company, have in SL. OpenSim is *already* usable by educators — it implements presence and shared presentations; voice can be streamed thru the multimedia channel, and questions from students can be typed, or they can call thru skype. Creating a user for each remote student is a trivial task, and no, you don’t need fancy avies for students (but you can put assorted boxes of freebies if you so like). And with the possibility of HyperGrid teleports, if you make the place nice, it can be visited by other people.

Then you’re right. To meet friends SL is *still* the place. For the moment. But I don’t think you can underestimate the *actual* potential of OpenSim. It can be used for serious things right now. And I’m pretty sure it will be usable for much more things tomorrow :-)

Good going Vint, I have a Virtual Linux server at work, it’s a bit low powered so I’ll see how installing Opensim goes on it.

The firewall ports might be an issue .

Yeah, by the time you finish a good working OpenSim, SL would be dead like ActiveWorlds. No one would have such interest to use or hear the titlie “Second Life” anymore if SL did indeed dried up in summer of 2009.

Not that it has anything to do with you or the OpenSim bringing SL down… Linden Lab’s stupidity is brewing their path to the final door.

At the moment, there’s way too many people have such ego. They like to have sexy avatars. Looking cooler than some freebie/newbie avatars. So speaking the question for “education” is a very blurry line. If anything, best bet are senior adults using it for education. Nothing wrong with them learning something new but why? Most Educator get their money from young punks whom are easier to reap because they have to jump through hoops for better jobs. So they have to jump through hoops, but they get choices in looking like crap or actually show up in classroom.

The true potential for OpenSim is long over due. I really doubt there will be any hope for it because developers are changing their ways to support their real-life self at this time of the year.

Investing in it with education and such… It’s not wise to jump through hoop if you don’t know what you’re going to land on.

It has been more than a year now… nothing major had changed nor added.

“Nacon, it’s almost Sunday evening…”
It’s Sunday everyday. I gave them a month. No good.

Excellent post Vint, makes me really fuzzy and warm inside to see non-dev people installing OpenSim. Right from the start, it’s been an ambition of OpenSim to be easily accessible by the newcomer. I believe your post shows it to be, router issues aside. (It’s always those router issues) - On a side note, we did adress some of those newcomer issues in Tribal Net, which is a grid of easily setup self-hosted regions. Welcome to the world of OpenSim!

@Vint: Re: your problem with step 6. To me it sounds as a password problem. The master avatar and password you add the first time you run OpenSim.exe is stored in /regions/default.xml; maybe there you’ll find the culprit? Anyway I’ll incorporate your explanations about the “create user” command to my tutorial, in case somebody experiences the same problem.

Thanks for testing the tutorial! :-)

I should try out OpenSIM again. I recall testing ti a long whole ago possibly when it first came out. It was ugly and the AV didn’t animate so I pretty much got bored with it.

It was a decent novelty.

On the point of trying OpenSIM again. I have an decent laptop with a dead screen that would be perfect for this. I just need to get WIN XP installed with remote access (difficult without being able to see). I could stick the machine in a corner somewhere.

@Josh: Don’t laptops have “screen out” cable connection thingies? Or is it the graphics card that died?

@Stefan: Tyvm. From what I understand, that might explain. :D (But err, as said above, it’s more or less fixed. Although, until now, nobody else reported that problem?)

@Zonja, will include it in my following link-list. (And track back when I finally finish my post about DRM … which is difficult, as I keep changing my mind daily. :d)

JoshMiller wrote a comment on January 6, 2009

Yeah it has a screen out but it’s broken too. Seems to be video card related which on a laptop is of course nearly impossible to replace. I plan to stick the drive in another similar laptop and do the install and work out driver issues later remotely.

Well I started work on it last night but because both PCs are second hand and broken I had trouble getting the machine with the working monitor to stay powered up to complete the install. such is the inherent problem with being “cheap”.

I got to thinking though. If I get it working, I’ll basically have a SL Island I can take anywhere. Just set it down turn it on and hook up to it via another PC.

@Nacon

Don’t you find it very limiting and inconvenient living on a Flat Earth pal ? :)

Opensim = open minds.

Nacon wrote a comment on January 10, 2009

Earth is flat? Don’t think NASA wasn’t aware of that.

As for OpenSim, I do believe you know about the limitation. Due to such limitation, it’s has become quite inconvenient to wait for any sign of improvement update. You may be open mind but you’re inconvenient for some reason I believe.

However, you’re not the only one. Linden Lab is inconvenient as well lately.

Evad Babii wrote a comment on January 10, 2009

@Nacon

True, there is a lot about OpenSim which is not ‘convenient’ at the moment, but the same was said about the internet/web in those heady days when all you had was very slow black and white text on a screen or teleprinter.

Fortunately, many people believed in the possibilities of it, and stuck around waiting for it to grow and improve - which it obviously did.

I very strongly believe that OpenSim has enormous possibilities, and am prepared to wait for it’s potential to manifest itself. The whole VW concept is still in it’s infancy (on the WWW timescale) and has yet to find a true niche market (imo), but when it does, I’m confident that OpenSim will be one of the big players, even if not as a marketable product, then at least as one of, if not the major contributor to the ‘Metaverse’ … or whatever it might be called then.

Limitations can just be challenges if dealt with as such - they don’t need to be a reason for negative thinking.

Evad :O)

PS. Kewl comment at RaR ‘boss’ Rimbaud’s hypergrid post. You did a great job at utterly and completely ignoring prok by starting your comment with @RaR. :D *pats Evad on the back*

Ah .. me misinterpreted your reference - ‘OT’ = ‘Off Topic’ - not sticking to the subject (a big weakness of mine LOL).

PS: As I’m not into being stalked, I avoid all comments by prok like the plague (and treat them with the disdain they invariably deserve). I’m sure you can relate to that ‘Miss’ Vint ;)
