How to Sort Noobs (Take I & II)

November 29, 2008 2:54 am

Noob Sorting - Now

Noob Sorting - Future?

Agree? Great! Go and take a look at Dandellion Kimban’s JIRA proposal to sort noobies new arrivals future Residents, mentors and help islands according to language.

Bullshit you say? Ok, ok, it’s just a sketch! But really, if you have a better idea for ‘Noob* Sorting’, share it with us in the comments! I’m curious.

Disclaimer: ‘Noob’, ‘n00b’ or ‘nubile young thing’ is never meant to be disrespectful. We like them - most of the time - and wish them a happy stay and a easy road to grown up citizenship of Second Life. (At least, if whilst growing up, they support the SLeconomy and purchase stuff.)

The focus needs to change a lot indeed, it’s not really inviting people to “stay” on the grid.

I always thought there was a difference between “newbie” (people who genuinely don’t know but want to) and “noob” (people who don’t know and don’t really care).

And the former kind is rare.

Like this idea so much, and would vote there immediately. *Language* matters!

Although selecting language at entrance can be more handy both for new residents and mentors, I believe that this could lead to some sort of “ghetto”.
The diversity of Second Life is what appeals to most people from what I have seen in my 1 year and 9 months of mentoring. The people I know that were confined to the existing language communities from the begining have a narrow sight of what SL is.
Until now - and I spend some time per day at HIs - I always got Mentors for people who don’t speak English when called in the Official Groups, most of the times more than one.
But may be I’m just a lucky girl *winks

P.S.: Jira voted

Winter -

Its human nature for people who speak the same language to want to be together. Would you hang out in a German sim as they all spoke (chat/text) in German?
You cant avoid this.
As a business owner in in SL for 4 years now I have noticed hordes of none English speaking customers coming in and I put on my translator hud and help as best I can but generally SL needs some kind of in built language translator - built into the actual interface for sure.
Not everone esp newbies ( and none english speaking newbies more so ) know these translators exists or where to obtain one.
