Inventory tagging system

December 3, 2007 1:03 am

Just some wishful thinking: wouldn’t it be nice if we could ‘tag’ stuff in our inventory? Each inventory item would allow up to 10 tags. And maybe I’d finally succeed at managing my inventory.

An example:

I have

  1. a pair of silver shoes bought on Veyron’s advice.
  2. a silver dagger that’s just for decoration purposes and attaches to left upper leg. Dandellion likes it.
  3. a notecard on Veyron’s secret affair with Dandellion.
  4. a freebie pair of jeans.

I could tag

  1. the shoes: silver, shoe, Veyron, november 2007, outfit A, outfit B, outfit C, creator name
  2. the silver dagger: left upper leg, decoration, outfit B, outfit D, arms, role play
  3. the notecard: Dandellion, Veyron, gossip, to blog about, CodeBastard Redgrave
  4. the jeans: blue, jeans, pants, freebie, outfit A, outfit Z, august 2007, creator name

Of course, one could choose to ONLY search the invent for tags. So if I have a left-over attachment spot on the leg, I would search for ‘left upper leg’. Needing shoe’s, I’d go with ’shoe’. Wanting to see all I have involving Veyron, I’d type ‘Veyron’. Feeling dangerous I’d go with ‘arms’. No?

*Wondering what’s coming with the jeans and silver shoes from outfit A and if Dandellion would like it* ;-)

Silver shoes and jeans sounds like a bit of a disaster, BUT I love the tagging idea…

Hehe, if I didn’t know better, I’d say you had the hots for Veyron too, but I know you don’t and just said the above for comedy effect n’ stuff…

Hej! My human owns a lot of jeans and some silver - cutish - summer shoes and that look fairly ok.

I needed an example, and then I needed an avatar that was likely to have an affair… =D

Love the idea of tags….. but not the idea of tagging the 8000 or so things in my inventory! o.O

Besides, I think I would just find another way to misplace everything, tagged or not! :-)

[…] I also have a pretty clever system for changing clothes fast.  I also concur with Vint about the tagging system she’s talking […]

Vint doesn’t have the hots for Veyron?

::sob sob::

Come on Dandellion… let’s go…. I need to work on a new outfit to get Vint’s attention….

(Disclaimer, I didn’t have Vint buy the shoes with the jeans… :) )

Pretty nice system, although code-wise, each item would need 10x the data space it takes for folder storage :-S. I mean, each item has something similar to a UUID for what folder it’s stored in. For example:

‘Silver Shoes’_'My favorite’_001_12345678901234

So, with tagging — let’s make this example like the item has 10 tags — it would be like this:

‘Silver Shoes’_'My favorite’_001_12345678901234_12345678901234_12345678901234_
12345678901234_12345678901234_12345678901234_
12345678901234_12345678901234_12345678901234_
12345678901234

(did a few line breaks to save the example from being cut off by WordPress bugs, and 001 is permissions [0/1 for copy, 0/1 for modify, and 0/1 for transfer])

But, usage-wise, that would be great! Although I like categories better :-S. Plus, 90% of my inventory is copy-enabled, even furni (I “order” copyable versions for extra L$), and most of my stuff don’t need more than one folder. For example, Clothing has outfit folders: “Flames”, “Shadow”, “Formal”, “Cyber”, “Human”, and “Silver (work in progress)”. You should get around to doing that too :-).

LMAO on Veyron’s disclaimer.

Barry, if they would allow us to host our own invents, that problem would be instantly solved? ;)

Actually, hosting inventories can be shared between users and LL (or whoever will do the assets in the future). They keep this part they hold now for security reasons, and all the other info including tags is stored locally.

And I want the only copy of that notecard!

Dandellion, not locally, but somewhere on a private server on the i-net. Although, maybe that’s ‘locally’ too. And you’re not getting the notecard. Gossiping using notecards is difficult, it always reveals who started the gossip. =d

I can close my eyes if I am asured that I got the only existing copy :)

And tags can be either on private server or indeed localy cause you’re the only one that needs tags from your inventory… though that will make one imobile.

What’s this about Veyron’s secret affair with Dandellion?
I wouldn’t need a tag to remember somehting like that!

Codie, it’s only logical to tag the notecards also with the creators name? :d And Seraphine, contact Codie for more details, as said before, the notecard is no-transfer. :(
