Is She really a she?

July 24, 2007 5:02 am

L.C. shared with me his tactics for testing if female avatars have a lady or a gent behind their keyboards. L.’s way of gender testing is somewhat time intensive, within narrow minded standard gender thinking and probably not completely fool proof, but worth a try:

For two months, each morning, ask the lady avatar how she is feeling today. If during those two months, each morning, you get the answer: ‘I’m feeling fine, thank you.’ it is most definitely not a lady you are talking to.

Now that is what I call a sexist tactic!!!

The causes of our bad moods are allways reduced to some “cyclical events”…
Your L.C. may ask me how I am feeling NOW, and I will answer him by gunpoint… ***

And as if guys never feel bad… never been turned down L.C., never had a hangover…??? Allow me to doubt if you are really a man, you there behind your keyboard???

***(thingking of it.. that isnt such a bad feeling.. *grinz*)

If each morning you get that answer, you’re talking with a bot, not a person. :D

A much better test that does not require any questioning is something I heard: When meeting the av, note the clothes she is wearing. If the clothes are the same each and every time, the probability of “she” being a “he” IRL is rather high :-)

I think this is the most retarded thing I ever seen. For all the reasons above, plus how about loosing your time. Do you think all girls tell everyone when “indisposed”? Yeah that is sexist and have a faliure rate of about 80%. Very sad and pathetic…

Dal, your humorous attempt to add up to it is also fail. I think I will keep the same clothing for 2 weeks long (which I already did! lol). Ever heard of poor people, or noobies, or just lazy? lol

I have the best trick for you. And how about merely asking her, if you care that much. And how about respecting her decision if she don’t want to tell you. If you don’t trust she is, pass to another phone call.

Vint, i’m used to see you post worthy news. This sounds like the Avastar, sorry to say that *lol*

Yeah this is more of a joke … apart from that, I mean, I don’t login to SL to discuss my issues and not-so-well-being in first life … what’s the point? So I’m always fine in SL :)))

I just love when somebody is testing me. It is mostly experiment in superstitions. :)))
Once I’ve been accused of being a man wearing fem avatar because I spend more time in a sandbox building things than in clubs dancing! ROFL Nevermind the fact that, as much as I count, I spent most of my time teleporting around and talking….

Question is, why are people so obsessed with human’s gender?

Or, apparently, you could just sit back and watch who gets offended by such posts and take that into consideration… *grins*

and runs away quickly.

Now I’m a big fan of not pushing RL into SL, so if I’m having a crappy day in RL for whatever reason, I try not to let it creep into SL. SL is my way of having a good time, so why would I start out by logging in and saying - I feel like crap this morning….

Rather, I’m glad to be online talking with you, it takes my mind of RL problems.

Dalien, I OFTEN wear the same outfit in-world for over two weeks. Just because I’m to lazy to change. =)

And I think Wrath found the solution. *writes down: Veronique, Tobie, Tiana, Amelia, Codie, Milena, Dandellion: female for sure* :p

Strangely enough Codie, if I post ‘worthy news’: almost no comments. I post this stuff - I found it rather funny - 12 comments. *scratches ears*

It is quite simple (note that I have experience in posing as a girl in SL!). Ask the person about their computer. The answer is telling: women, even women like my own girl with much more knowledge about computers than me, will hardly ever try to dazzle you with figures. Most men, predictably, give you a (grossly exaggerated) measure in ‘inches’, so to speak…

Ok, thx Laetizia. A recap then: Veronique, Tobie, Tiana, Amelia, Codie, Milena and Dandellion, please list your computer specs. (So we can see if Wrath’s theory checks out. ;))

Uh oh, just read dandellions comment:
“Once I’ve been accused of being a man wearing fem avatar because I spend more time in a sandbox building things than in clubs dancing!”

… so if I as a male avatar do way more dancing in clubs (like … most of the time) than building in sandboxes (which I never do), does that now make me a girl in RL? *checks* ;)

Well I work as a network admin for my day job… I’d hope I could list my PC’s specs… Otherwise I’m in the wrong business… ^_^

There are ways to tell, but in the end most people just go with their gut instinct… And then get it wrong as often as not…

No girl is an admin LOL
That is simply because admin needs to know specs ith numbers and girls are not capable of that. Sure there is a way round, but that piece of paper is always lost in the purse.

I think Laetizia ment the amount of bragging that goes with listing your computer specs, not about actually knowing them. =)

Anyway, it’s guessing. And then the second question: why would you guess at gender anyway. Just judge people by their SL looks! ;)

*nods at Vint* Really, why guessing somebody’s RL genitals? In 90% of cases you just cannot be sure. You puts yourself in the pits of suspiction and you are ruining your experience of yur second life, second life in the whole and your experience of that avatar. For what?

I think that this is one of the funniest exchanges I’ve read for a long time. Giggles quietly, crescendo, suddenly great belly laugh. And I’ve got a GREAT belly right now. And come to think of it I feel like shit this morning.
Well, back to the sandbox. (Thinks….Must change my clothes first.)
Viva Vint!!

::Giggles, shaking her head.:: Wow. Such a funny way to respond. Such a funny thing indeed.. Same answer every day is a guy.. Pft.

Yaknow.. I’m not sure what the obsession is with caring whether the human is a male or female is. I couldn’t care less.. Whatever someone represents themselves, in SL.. is obviously what they wish people to think them as. It makes most sense to just respect the person, instead of constantly guessing and wondering. The doubt eats at relationships.. so why have the doubt? ^^;

I’ve found out quite a few times that a (sl) female I care about very much, Love very much, is a (rl) male. It made no difference, even though my prefrence, RL or SL, is pretty much 99.9% female. I still Love the person just as much.

Who knows.. Maybe I’m just odd that way. ^^;; ::Shrugs, and waves.::

The gender of the person behind the avatar, I can never know for sure. I do find it somehow interesting, but in the end who cares. (as I am bisexual anyway) ;-)

But I do know when they are (fe)male chauvinist sexist pigs! :-P

Interesting blog by the way Vint, I just discovered it and put it staight on my blogrol!

I wish people would not view this gender issue as a yes/no, right/wrong, either/or situation. Clearly it is important to SOME people who is behind the avatar. To other people it is not. To a third set, it is a political / personal freedom issue and shouldn’t be important, whatever they personally feel.

A friend and I tried the experiment of trading roles. I created a female avatar and she made a male one. Then we went out dancing. One of us found no difference in the experience, but the other was extremely uncomfortable in their new skin (and I’m NOT revealing who it was). This argument is as much about feelings as it is about the intellect.

My personal experience is that over the course of several months, you get to know the people you go out with. If that doesn’t satisfy you that the other person is being open enough with you, then you should quietly end the relationship rather than prying into the other person’s affairs. Just my $0.02.

Oh! Now I’m curious. That’s not fair! =d (Really, I am curious. My guess would be that the one who moved from being female to being male was uncomfortable.)
