Is there a purpose to Virtual Life?
January 26, 2009 10:00 amThis one made me giggle, trice: “What is SLex? When a boy avatar and a girl avatar and the men behind both avatars love each other very much, they rez some pose balls and text dirty to one another until a wife/girlfriend walks into the room and asks what in the hey is going on. The end.“
These are words by - Girl Wonder - Tymmerie Thorne, where she protests the fact that we are being treated as “SLab rats”. According to Miss Thorne, every thesis, survey, … involving Second Life, focusses on SLex, romance, dating, flirting, … more than any of the other possibilities as there are entrepreneurship, education, non-profits, role play & gaming, fashion, … .
I must say, I haven’t filled in much surveys re:Second Life lately - less hype, less surveys? - but certainly, most of the documentaries made do focus on virtual affairs, sex and betrayal. So do most news stories. That much, that you’d - almost - start to believe the only thing we rezzed for was SLex. Or did I miss any good, constructive stories & research papers that were released recently? If so, please hit me up! SLex is not a necessity for procrastination in the virtual world, so what is the purpose of our - virtual - lifes?

SL is just a part of real life so the question for me ends up back at what is the purpose of life? I’m not sure what the purpose of real life is so I can’t answer about SL ;)
As we know, the answer to life is 42.
The meaning of my virtual life has changed over time: First it was lots of watch&learn, then it became serious research (for a book), turned into a blogger’s life of meet&greet&write about it - and now I left my news desk to be a comic drawer - just without a pen but with my SL snapshots as the picture…
SLife is always changing, SLex may be a part of it for some, but after all: SLex is not NECESSARY for it to go on! Phew!
