It was this… or telling you about script limitations.

January 3, 2009 2:14 am

Did Lindens really need an entire 3 lengthy blogposts to say this… ?!!!

We haven’t delivered the promised ‘before January’ information on script limitations for OpenSpace and Homesteads yet, but… lookie!!! Snowman!!! Whilst you’re distracted by that much snowy goodness, we’ll look into continuing to keep this promised information from you in different languages*). Happy New Year!

Snowman ’shot’ by by Nim and build by Cutea Benelli.

* Not that we’re doing a good job at that.

Update: LL just released a time estimate on inserting script limitations, which differs a lot from the initinal “Before January 5th, we’ll tell you what the script limitations will be.” Timing for Script Limits:

  1. In Q1, we will be gathering data on script load, and sharing this usage data with the community before deciding what the most appropriate limits are.
  2. In Q2, we expect there to be Viewer changes to allow you to monitor your script usage against those limits.
  3. In Q3 we will begin enforcing script limits.

I commented on the lack of information a while back, when Jack posted his nonsense blogs. I feel a bit chuffed as I think this is the first time I’ve blogged on a subject ahead of you, Vint! ;-).

Seriously, are we really surprised at the lack of information, vis-a-vis Homesteads?

- We know for a fact that while there is a resource problem, it is most certainly not limited to the “old” Openspace sims, but is a grid-wide issue (which is why Babbage Linden et al have been looking into possible solutions since…oh, the end of August….)

- The technical issues were merely the hook on which to hang the “less for more” Homesteads. Now LL have got what they wanted, the need to keep up the rest of the pretense on Jack’s part has passed. After all, the resourcing issue isn’t his problem….it “belongs” to Babbage - so all is la-la happy in Jack’s little cubicle on the south coast of England.

On a side note, I find it interesting that Clare starts her post off with the “American” definition of “international”, rather than the more widely-regarded definition. Could this be a way of opening the door for later posts which say, “well, of course ‘international’ could mean _that_ - but in our joyous little world of Linden, we have decided it means _this_…” (followed by a description of the minimal amount of work required to complete a given “internationalising” task)….

Yep. It’s a new year, but it is still the same old cynic in me…!

Great. Now they edit the pingbacks. I’ve seen several pingbacks appear and then go. Your “Sudden gaps” post http://www.vintfalken.com/sudden-gaps-in-ms-perception-of-2008/ made it into M’s post http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/12/29/a-look-back-a-look-ahead/, but this one I’m commenting now doesn’t get linked back. Well, it clearly contains broadly offensive notions: incitation to suicide, degradation of family values, … ;-)

“Responses are currently closed, but you can trackback from your own site. ” => Liars! ;) Yes, Miss Zonja, I noticed this also. Main reason for this blogpost was to trackback to their three latests and scream “where is that info” through those… . Fail. :(

@Inara… *shakes her head* No, you were not. I mentioned the lack of OpenSpace script limit info already a few times here, and “please, linden gods, we pray for more knowledge!” is an ungoing theme here at vintfalken.com. *grins* (Still waiting for a roadmap also, btw! ;))

Nadine, yeah well, I assume the whole world understands “happy new year!”, on the other hand, the whole world does not understand this large chunk of text. ;)

Well, I *did* mean in reference to Jack’s Xmas, “everything is well in la-la land” posts, which I responded to to at the time; don’t remember seeing anything here until you mentioned them in connection with Clare’s post :).

Still not a competition. We all feel the same way where the script limits are concerned. and leave us not forget, that when they come in, they won’t only apply to “Homesteads” and “OpenSpace” sims….

Reminds Inara. :D And no, not a competition, but joined cause! :) That they will probably also apply to ‘full regions’ => yeah, I figured that much after reading the transcript from Babbage Linden’s office hours. =/

You know the “free beta” offers? And then after 30 days you need to pay much more (of course, anything more than free is “much more”) or live with limited/capped functionality? Well, it seems like 30 days is +- 6 years in Linden time and we’re coming out of free beta now.

Vint,

Yup. I found the transcript of Babbage’s office hours interesting when I read it back in November. Darien Caldwell has also posted more on the subject on her website forum, which makes it pretty clear the model LL are going for will be to cap & manage script resources per sim in much the same way as prims are managed - with an “additional” pool for avatar attachments.

To say the least, this is going to take some implementation - tools-wise and educationally - hence why Jack’s long-awaited post on the subject is actually light on the technical aspects, as they are very much “tba” (no surprises there).

To be fair to Jack he’s not a techie. They’re just preparing the ground so that script limits on openspaces are more severe than full sims.

Interesting that they find a known problem that effects openspaces and homesteads more than full sims now, still no proper attempt to justify the price rise but I’m sure they’ll thank us for the informative discussion we never really had.

And now we have the details and - perhaps unsurprisingly - it’s wait and see. I’m speculating whether the huge decline in Open Spaces has made the script problem less relevant.

this whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth… I am not sure what the future will hold, but i’m hanging on to my hat. :)

Well, with the landmass going down, we should expect to see some kind of reaction from LL, because that means tier is also going down. My expectation is to see a fairly stringent script limitation, but landowners will be able buy a new kind of land (ScriptStead) which will allow them more scripts. Of course, this will cost much more money but since people have already been dup … wups, sorry … conceded the Homestead land issue, it should be easy to do ScriptSteading as well. My predictions:

(1) All current landowners will be allowed to run 10 lines of
script per month. After that, scripts will not longer be
allowed. Of course, sim owners will be charged the
conversion fees.

(2) A new kind of land (ScriptStead) will be made available to
anyone who has at least four (4) sims. For a conversion
fee of only USD$1200 each (when converted in groups of
four), you will be able to convert your sims to
mini-scriptsteads, while will allow you to run
25 lines of script per month. Your tier for a mini
scripstead
will only be twice what you are paying now for a normal
sim.

(3) Within 6 months, a ScriptStead product called Assistance
ScriptStead will be available, allow unlimited scripting. It
will be a fee producer (whups, we mean free product) to
anyone who owns 4 or more mini-ScriptSteads.

(4) At that time, you will have the option of converting 2 of
your mini-ScriptSteads to full ScriptSteads at a price
which has yet to be arrived at. More than two will be
subject to a 200% surcharge (and VAT of course). Tier for
these ScriptStead should be no more 150% more than
tier for a mini-scriptsteads, which is quite a bargain
considering that you can run scripts, and are getting two
mini-scriptstead for only one and a half times the price.

Of course, LL has never done anything like that before, so I am sure that they would never do anything like again the future.

One (*unrelated, honest Linden*) query: How do I get on OpenSim?
