Let group membership limitations be history!

December 21, 2007 1:12 am

Second Life Group Membership LimitationsTired of having to ‘justify’ yourself to someone as to why you do not join their group? Tired of hearing the same excuse over and over - sorry, I have reached my group membership limit - when asking people to join your group? Tired of having to go over your list of groups and decide which person will be the least insulted when you quit one?

Well, all this group membership limitation trouble and pain that burdens your Second Life will be over soon! That is, if you go to JIRA issue MISC-208 ‘More than 25 groups!’ and vote positively for it. Veyron said to do so in her putch to expand SL group limit! And CodeBasterd Regrave also thinks this is a great idea. Yet I do not see why we would have to use a petition if we have JIRA.

Update: If you’re not familiar with using the JIRA, Cherlindra Lamont has a nice step-by-step explanation of the login process and the voting over on Fabulously Free in SL.

Yeah, I know: this probably has been begged, pleaded and demanded for before. But let’s try this. See if we still own our world, or at least are a tiny bit able to influence it. Oh, and dear Linden gods, if you can’t give us this, then at _least_ give us RSS feeds for group notices!

I hope this is the last time I’ll be ‘cleaning out’ my Second Life group memberships:

I want this personally, but, I can think of very valid business arguments for not having it. As it stands, group chat is a massive bandwidth sink, as it sends to a large number of users all at once, and maintains a live session. Group voice chat adds a new dimension of usage to this that is even greater.

There are 30 or 40 groups I’d love to be a member of, but I also realize that this is a potentially huge money pit for them.

yes this is awesome! there are so many groups i have to turn down because of this crap. it makes it hard when you have to maintain groups of your own and then you have staff groups for things, and rp games and sometimes rp games have more than one groupt that you need to be in… i am so voting for this right now and i’ll pimp it to my friends as well

Indeed. I’m in favor of the “Zero-One-Infinity” principle myself; if you’re going to allow possibly-multiple instances of X within your system, you should allow either none of it, exactly one of it, or an unlimited number of them. Voted.

I signed this online petition for more groups in SL. It was started for DJ’s, but since serious merchants have vendors in more than one sim, you all need more groups to be able to put out your venders in those sims. Add your SL name to the list and pass the info on to your friends to sign it too.

We got this new list thing that sends info and doesn’t use a SL group. So get rid of your number 18…! Keep the others!

Shouldn’t it be 32 = 2 to 5th..or did Lindos forget about all that 2 stuff…

I still think a petition is rather useless, as this is perfectly solvable by voting on JIRA. This way they now for sure people voting are people signed up for second life, and they can even try to figure out of the majority of people voting on this are premium accounts or not, are very active in sl or not, etc. If you can login, JIRA may serve it’s purpose! ;)

Katrina, I think by now some suggestions are made to stop abuse: only for premium members, pay (small amount!) / 10 groups added, not all groups always active, RSS feeds for notifications, … Somehow: anything that keeps us 1) informed about the groups we want to be kept up to date about and 2) we can join all groups we need for vendors, rezzing permissions, etc.

Nushi, I’ll consider. Once we are allowed to have more than 25! ;)

Jon, yes this is possible also using avatar keys, I believe those systems work that way? Yes it’s a whole hazard of opting in and out, and as we know we the spam, opting out does not always work. Keeping it to the groups would nicely centre all and SL groups would become a nice version of ‘kind of feedreader’ on what’s to do in-world? (Really, as far as I’m concerned they may disable group chat completely. Almost never use it.)

Lillie, as for the Naughty Nine, I think I’ll need to rezz some booze, or really be sleep depreviated before I dare to answer that one. :p (So, in a couple of hours? ;))

I was voter #399, blogged about it, and signed a petition too. Let’s get this bug fixed so SL can be a social network!

Dedric, yep! When I blogged this, votes were at 307, now they are at 462. Onder Skall says this is JIRA issue #1 at the moment. (And does point out it is _still_ unassigned.) Let’s see if we can get another 200 votes or something?
