LittleToe Bartlett, it’s a she!?

July 21, 2007 8:47 am

LittleToe Bartlett @ Greenies Launch PartyI am severely impressed with wat LittleToe Bartlett and Pavig Lok did with the Greenies Home Sim, so when I finally got to meet LittleToe on the launch party I was totally going Whaaaaaaaa! =d Especially after she gave me that bottle of meds. :p

The strangest thing happened though, when after first talking in main chat and then IM I focussed my camera on LittleToe: the builder I admire that much was not a he but a she. Wow! I was shocked. When I told LittleToe about me totally not expecting her to be a ’she’, she answered: ‘too funny- I thought the same of you… :)’.

LittleToe Bartlett @ Greenies Launch Party (close up)Strange, isn’t it? I know that on our grid we have kick-ass female avie designers, builders, photographers, scripters, … but when communicating with one of those avies which does not have an obviously female name, I still assume to be dealing with a male avatar. So far for emancipation / emancipated Vint. Same thing happens to me all the time. Most of the people I first meet in IM or main chat think Vint Falken is male until they get me in camera view. And who claimed SL differs that much from RL again?

It seems we do not only recreate First Life goods in Second Life, but also stupid First Life embedded thinking patterns. Now let’s just await the first study that compares the wages of female avatars with the wages of male avatars that do the same job. And career opportunities for female avies vs. those of male avies. Etc. *grins*

PS. I forgot to ask LittleToe if she owns any guns. I think Miss Bartlett would make a great Girl with Guns (and Glasses). Really. She would be awesome at it. Damned.

Well, hopefully enough gentle corrections may actually one day do some good in terms of the general awareness of gender issues in all walks of life. It’s certainly more likely than achieving popular use of those godawful gender-neutral pronouns.

Ah, Ms. LittleToe, known her for some while now. She keeps trying to hire me, but I keep turning her down. Great builder.

I thought the same about you! “Vint” sounded like a strapping fellow, a cross between “Vince” and “Clint,” maybe…

[…] Told you so. Now I wonder, if I would replace the giant header with a picture of my female avatar here on my blog *points up* by a picture of a male avatar, would people finally realise I’m female or so? ^^ […]
