NBC4.tv, hush!
May 7, 2007 8:26 am‘Oh Hush!’ was actually my first reaction after seeing this lousy attempt at an apology from a nbc4.tv reporter. I quote: ‘It is very similar to the avatar that I created for Second Life, but I couldn’t use that one because it didn’t have a white background. I was able to find that one on another website and to use that background and dissolve it in our story.‘ More about all this in this Flickr thread.
Creating a white background for you avie isn’t that hard. You can invest: a Photosphere or N30 with a plain white background and full bright on will do just fine. You can (ask someone) to mask the avie out in PS. You can even paint the background with white in paint. But the easiest way? Watch this:

(And actually ’stealing’ had to be in red type too, my mistake! ;))
See, NBC4.tv, we can do video too! (And stop referring to ‘Second Life’ as ‘a website’. It’s a game, a 3DWorld, a metaverse, seed of all evil, … whatever you like to call it, but not a frigging ‘website’. Aaargh!!!!)

Awww that was awesome! Thank you, Vint =)
You should send it in to that idiot.
Is it just me, or did they now took the ‘apology’ too?!Nvm.It’s still up. You know, I never got to see the original video. My only gripe was that my photo was being used without my permission. After I found out that Kriss’ avatar was being misrepresented as the reporters, well that really got me mad.
And now he just told everybody that your RL name is ‘Amber’. :d
Left a friendly comment on the vlog:
In the Second Life ‘website’ we have a way of capturing video too, and it’s called Machinima.
I did a quick one especially for you, just to explain how you can easily create a white background behind an avator. You can watch it here: http://www.vintfalken.com/nbc4tv-hush/
That was an excellent rebuttal (tutorial) for a rather hasty - and to me - false apology (called covering his ass). Especially to be what you call quick and dirty, Vint.
He as a reporter, he simply did not do his due diligence in his, “Story of Second Life” and decided to steal an identity, in laziness OR because he just didn’t think we would care? Wrong.
I would hope by now atleast the news station and ‘reporter’ realize how much we treasure our Second Lives and how much value & pride we have in ourselves and our metaversal community. Trying to introduce Second Life to others does not justify stealing identities. Period.
All he had to do was politely ask permission and all of this could have been avoided.
You Rock Vint!
Actually, I never spoke to him. It was Ardemus Howitt that spoke to him. Here’s what she says about it:
“Yes, I called the station and talked to him. I made him very aware of the copyright issue regarding Second Life and Flickr. He claimed to be ignorant of this. I also talked about the swimwear I am selling in SL and that I didn’t want people to think I was a male reporter.
He said he would apologize in a video blog and pull the video off the website. I never mentioned the name of my avatar and he never asked. I never expected him to say my real name in the video! (As you can see, I was not very creative with the name!) And I didn’t ask him to promote the swimwear! All I want was an “I am sorry” statement.
I am sorry for the confusion about this. And to set the record straight, the woman with the afro is my other avatar, Olyna Juran. I use her for modeling my swimwear.
Like I said earlier, the cure is worse than the cold! Best regards, Amber (aka Ardemus)”
Very good demo video Vint! To bad some reporters haer about something hot, then get the bare minimum of info on the subject, then present what they found, with no real depth.. Guess it takes too much time and effort to do things right anymore….:(
DesertWolf, there were some rather good articles in the Flemish newspapers, so it can be done otherwise.
Ty Melodious, I still don’t see how Tobie and the others can keep that calm at this. Especially as you see how he fucks up in the ‘apology’, not even realising Toby and Aredemus are two different avies AND persons.
And he didn’t even apologize to Zoe! :d
Just an aside
The Linden legal department are suing an american sexuality foundation for an article (now withdrawn) that they wrote on sexuality in SL on behalf of a former girlfriend and I, who were defamed in a typical superior and off hand way in a snotty article by a supposedly sexulaity expert wrote and published on the web.
Its so inaccurate and blatantly nasty that they have not denied causality.
Unfortunately - they were stupid enough to name us.
We were having a smooch at Oasis and she asked us (via the manager) to show them a new poseball set they had installed.
We were fully clothed, but not in her snotty piece!
I don’t suffer fools well I am afraid
Archie
