".....feu de mes cuisses, amour de ma vie"
Loved it in English, loved it in French - of course Nabokov did his own translation. Loved the Kubrick movie. Hated the pale copy. Jeremy Irons was enough of a sleaze arsehole (see, didn't use the dreaded "ass" word) but you couldn't see him as a suave professor.
The whole Linden "moral" process gets right up my nose. We come from every nation, colour and creed and are supposed to live in anarchic harmony under some sort of a code cobbled together in San Jose, Palo Alto and Harvard business school. Check out Tom Wolfe's terrific essay in "Hooking Up" tracing the origins of IT business ethics to Congregationalism. We're supposed to be obsessed with the same things as obsess the boardrooms of Silicon Valley, especially intellectual property to the extent that we have no power to resell things which we have legitimately bought. Unique in human history.
I don't want to be a Californian. I don't want to be a British Colombian. I don't want to be a Congregationalist. To me the Linden philosophy is just a step below the Playboy philosophy. Leave us alone Lindens!

@Smiley Barry: Well, as he says 'ass' is a part of some official names. As far the Hebrew, I'm already trying to learn LSL, so I can't take Hebrew too ATM. ;) But Flemish works fine too, if I would ever want a 'broadly offensive' first name. :p

@Laetizia, I've seen (one of the) movie(s). As far as the movie vs. book, I agree on that one. Especially since the LOTR movies. :p (And the 'Vallen' (Provoost?) book vs. the 'Vallen' film. Major disappointment that was. In my imagination the villain in the book was rather hansom. *grins*)

I don't know if I can find and view the movie by then Vint :) Anyway I hate seeing the movie of a book I have read - it replaces the imagery I made up in my mind with the ideas of the director. Plus - there are more movies than one.

Why would people want to use 'Ass' in their name anyway? And if they would want, they could've just used a translation. There's one language that's never blocked even if you use curse words :p "Hebrew" '^_^.

E.g.: 'Ass' = 'Tahat' (in eng(lish)-(heb)rew , or in Hebrew if you have Unicode enabled: תחת)

On the book: will you just screen the movie, please? I don't know if I can manage to find and read the book by then! That is, if I will be able to find the event in the listings. :p

We'll see. What about me hosting a discussion of the book next week on MS Parkkade? Or putting my tee up for sale?

So they do have time to let Lindens go through search listings, but not to reactivate accounts of persons banned for no reason?!!! *gasps*

Robin Linden said tonight that they don't 'ban' words, but use those words in their own searches to see what is advertised and dish out bans on the basis of that - as opposed to blanked bans on anything with the word. But it remains to be seen if she was truthful. It's easy for someone with a shop and a meeting space to test the waters - you can bet I will do just that.
As for the names... sounds like another impossible idea courtesy of LL.
