OpenSim ft. SLOpenID ft. Imagination

August 19, 2007 3:52 am

OpenSim? What’s that? Well, Dandellion started to explain what OpenSim is all about - reversed engineering Second Life’s server code, btw - in a way it’s understandable for normal humans, furries, goreans and neko’s in her recent series of blogposts. She started by listing some basic information about the OpenSim project and the benefits it offers.

I assume you’ve read those by now, and we can proceed to the next piece of information: SLOpenID. What’s that again? SLOpenID as you might guess, is a way to combine Second Life with OpenID. This allows you to take control of, and own your identity on the web when using sites that support the OpenID protocol.

You give the people your Second Life Resident Name and your Resident UUID and you get a neat multi-purpose ID in return. If you look at the many possible implementations for OpenID, I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of SLOpenID yet. As soon as I find out how to, you’ll probably be able to use your SLopenID to comment on this blog. (Somebody, help on getting the OpenID running here? :d)

(Just wondering, is there any cooperation with someone on the Teen grid, so they can get their own SLOpenID too, which could be transfered to a main grid avie when they reach age 18?)

Moving from Second Life to OpenSim (quick sketch)And for the imagination part? I think OpenSim is a kick ass project but I shall not leave Second Life. Why not? The friends? Partly, although lately even avatars have mail addresses and I’m sure most of them would love to give OpenSim a try too. But it’s that darned inventory. I’m not a materialistic person, I claim. Yet I am grown attached to my guns, clothes, skins, clublights, skybox, … . I feel like somehow they define ‘Vint Falken’ as much as what I write here does. I know LL will not (and probably never) let us - not without violating ToS that is - take the stuff out of whatever place they keep our inventories, although they claim we own them, but for OpenSim, it might be different:

What if they could somehow provide you with a sort of ‘OpenID’ for OpenSim which you could use to log on the different sims. Or there would be a possibility to link your avatars on those different sims to that ID.

The ID represents - amongst others - your inventory, somewhere stored. Be it on an own server, or on a server which you pay for depending on how much ‘closet space’ your inventory takes. So, although you travel through different sims, which do not need to be connected at all, you can still take your inventory along, as it’s not limited to one netwerk of sims. Creators could then choose to set ‘transsim’ or ‘not-transsim’ for their objects, depending on if they want them to travel or not. So I think that would force the object to know also if you own it on all sims, or just on a specific one. But as ‘open sims’ will be less ’sure of existence’ for starters, that would be a good way to make sure you do not loose your inventory when a sim or group of sims ceases to exist.

The ID could also be used to back up claims like ‘I am avie-X on sim-Y’, to run cross-sim groups, to support a general currency (if the different sims would feel like creating a ‘Euro’), … .

I know it’s asked a lot of probably impossible stuff from a project that does not even have a male population yet, but it would be neat, nah? =)

I know of OpenSim, but that darn thing doesn’t work on my PC even with the physics engine it requires, nor can I log on to DeepGrid. I’ll just wait for it to be bug-free-enough. If I could run a sim on my no-LAN-network computer… Ah, that’ll be the day OpenSim Space Engine will start to develop ‘^_^.

Smiley: there’s lots of stuff still in progress, physics included :) running the sim: possible. Not sure how about windows, but on linux - definitely. my RL av was probably running the highest sim ever today - on the height of a couple dozen km over atlantic :) So - catch me via mail at dalienta on gmail, or via googletalk, i will try to help.

P.S.: Now registering to OpenID, and hopefully when SLOpenID is done, and Teen Grid-compatible, i’ll search for a plugin for my TSL Talk system.

Thanks for posting about OpenSim, SLOpenID and imagination! :-D

TSL Talk? Did I miss something (again)?

About OpenID on WordPress… I am trying this right now…
And one stupid question, how do I open an account on SLopenID? Or is it that page that returns PHP error?

For me what defines my avatar is it’s shape and skin. I would love to be able to export that to other worlds. After all it’s just a set of figures and a graphic? Right?

Vint: there’s a few inherent interesting technical issues with the inventory/money. Every sim is a “man in the middle” which (if I recall well) would see everything. re. “trans-sim” - that’s something interesting. best of all would be if creators could sell watermarked textures without any bindings to platform. But both of the inventory and the money are quite big and interesting topics :)

@Vint: Nah, just a small website i’m trying ‘^_^ Once it’s all done, I should open it to the public. It’s Main-Grid-supported too, shall I send an invite?

Smiley: Duh! :p
Dandellion: Neat. Shall take a look at it between work and the blogger’s party, so I can shoot at you with questions when hanging on a pole? *grins*

@Vint: One last thing though — once i’ll get home, i’ll change the name to SL Talk. I think TSL Talk, for a website that is Duo Grid-based, is kinda stupid, huh?

P.S.: Please add comments subscribing by email! It’s a pain to use RSS or refresh constantly :-/.

Co.comments? But I’ll consider. =)

@Ravishal: if you are the creator of those - then you should have no problems exporting them elsewhere - since you own all the rights on them. If not… well, then the way the intellectual property works in SL it would not be allowed - otherwise you violate the ToS.

1) This plugin is better
2) SLOpenID is almost ready for it’s beta relaunch, I’ve just got to make the SL Profile Widget

Oh, re: SLOpenID on the teen grid, go along to Blue Linden’s Main Grid or Teen Grid Office Hours and ask him about getting SLOpenID’s HUD server installed on the Teen Grid.

(SLOpenID accounts are created just by clicking on a HUD)

Smiley, hear that? *points at SignpostMarv Martin’s last comment* (and happy now?)

As for the OpenID support on this blog, apparently I need to do some begging to my hosting company, before it will work. *sobs*

@Vint: Wait, you don’t host the server yourself? O.o I thought you do.

P.S.: Teen Second Life is running now at 0.00 Time Dilation, 13kmsec frame time, 20k Ping Sim time, etc. See here. I hope I didn’t cause it! :O

Smiley: oumps. I did not mean “crash the TSL sim”, I meant - “crash the opensim sim” :-)))
