Own the content, not the - virtual - world

October 31, 2007 3:16 pm

Although I’m still *sobbing* over not owning the world, the beginning of Linden Lab’s statement on the Wonderland Scandal (aka Age Play, episode XIV) did gave me some hope again. Not only do they communicate clearly to their Residents and the real life press that there’s nothing objectionable nor illegal in having a child-like avatar in itself and we must assume innocence until proof of the contrary, they also use the ‘own’ world again:

Second Life is a 3D virtual world in which all the content is created and owned by its Residents.

Hear, hear!

Yes, that changes as the circumstances changes. If Linden’s ass is in danger the content is owned by residents. If they are trying to talk with big corps, the “residents own content” part becomes invisible.
Though, it really surprised me that now again it is OK to have child avatar. Question is can we take that as a community standard and a rule or that will change too as soon as Angry-Bored-Mothers-Concerned-For-Their-Spoiled-Brats start yelling around?

It was always OK according to Linden Lab to use a child avatar in Second Life? It were only residents making a fuss, putting up signs that say ‘forbidden for child avs’, etc?

I see the right of existence for child avatars as a community standard. (But I guess I made that clear already a few times. ;))
