I believe the RESTbot (or it's successor) is used by http://www.sinewaverobots.com to offer ActorBots.

It's basically a service that lets you create bots and add simple behaviors to them - they can respond to instant messages for example, or when they receive money, etc.

What's different about this service is, it's all hosted, you don't need to run anything on your machine, for your bot to be logged in SL at all times.

While I hate to see that bots and similar implementations are only used to exploit things like SL search system, and game traffic, the geek side of me is also optimistic and excited about all the possibilities - I'd love to see some really smart customer support bots, that clients could use to either contact the shop owners (getting around the IM capping issues or excuses :P) or automatically perform some tasks like item replacements (you sent the bot the transaction number and the exact timestamp of your purchase, which is matched in the sellers transaction history and the bot sends you a replacement, for example).

Or automated tour guides that take you around an exhibition, etc.

Unfortunately, currently gaming the search system is basically the only thing people seem to come up with or care about when it comes to bot avatars. What a waste of possibilities :)
