Nope. But you kinda can't blame it. You did _cancel_ your account. I'm sure there must have been a 'are you really really sure?' button?

Is there a way of retrieving a whole inventory loss due to a cancelled and reactivated account.
Lindens say they cant retrieve it, surely there must be a way?

Second Inventory, at best, is buggy. At it's worst, it simply doesn't work. It's expensive, and clumsy, and these are just some of the reasons why we introduced Inventory Backup.

Inventory Backup is a cheaper alternative to Second Inventory and gives the user complete control over his or her inventory.

Second Inventory runs 11,000L$ - with that you can use the program on any name but still only copy things you have full perms to.

Inventory Backup runs 8,000L$ - with that you can use the program on any name and copy any item you have in your inventory, regardless of permissions. Of course with this power comes responsibility, and it's not our job to cripple our program with the thought that our public will abuse our program; ultimately it's the buyers responsibility.

Search Inventory Backup in SL and come on by and check it out.

Somebody needs to come out with a freewave version of something like this, Quite a few of us would like the ability to be able to backup inventory and dump it to OS. I just personally can not see dumping 40usd on such a program. penny pencher ~mew~

The team thing would be a handy addition but I can see contention brewing in that one. While Dae, Gadget, and I are constantly borrowing bits of each others work for new things, we're all within rl smacking distance if there's any dispute - I could see issues arising for long range partnerships.

I know why they're not allowing for the backup of non-full perm items (can you imagine the hullabaloo if he did?) but before this can become an actual useful tool for content creators they really do need to fix the issue of multiple items and bulk changes (perms, sale prices, etc) but I don't see them getting fixed anytime soon given the core of the system seems to relate to being able to "equip" the item (I think they're using the ability to store data on your current outfit as their tool). The only way I can imagine they could fix it is to essentially allow you to pick a group of items, and build a queue - you'd make the changes to the queue list (set perms, make it sellable, then backup), and it would then automate attaching each item in turn, make the changes, then detatch them and move on to the next item in the list.

I also discovered that it doesn't in fact allow editing of scripts - was trying to edit a bullet I made yesterday (since they have a die factor in them, it's difficult to edit them inworld without turning off the scripts, which I always forget to turn back on), So I figured I might be able to make some changes via this tool to the one in my inventory. No joy. Also, re editing shapes, prims, etc: there's no visual feedback (as in it's just the number input fields...) - I haven't tested that part yet - it may be that it's just a visual representation of what the parameters of the object are and not in fact an editor.

As is, it was a 40-odd dollar failed experiment. Ya lives ya learns.

Great, Solivar! It looks it can still use some work. And that what I would want to use it for, is not yet there (batch editing permissions, batch ordering, ...). Also the search would be incredibly handy, when added.

It wasn't the content I was worried about, - as you say, there are other ways to fetch that - just that I would still not be able to backup bought items (so no full perm).

What do you think for building/business teams with full perm items? Could it be handy for them? (For instance, they keep a 'backup' on a remote server somewhere, and the whole building team can access those goods through using SecondInventory and transfer them to their in-world inventories when needed?)

kay - so I laid out the money and bought a copy. Here's some introductory impressions:

- it logs you in - I saw my avatar pop up on Daequix's screen, so if you spend any time using it, be aware that people will see you logged inWorld - you can check to see if anyone's talking to you via the debug window, or simply be logged in via the regular client as well.

- examining and backing up an item rezzes it attached to it's default connection point - if it isn't assigned, it ends up on your hand. The drawback of this is that it won't allow you to examine unlinked sets eg: you've pulled a number of unlinked objects into your inventory - say a house with doors not linked but in place. You can't attach an unlinked set, thus, it can't let you back it up.

- it won't back up items you don't have FULL permissions on, and you cannot adjust permissions on protected items.

- you can't view information for items you don't have permissions for - scripts open to show a message that you don't have mod permissions for.

-You can edit notecards and scripts, view component textures, edit dimensions for shapes, edit prim parameters, set permissions and sale settings, but since you do it much the same way as inWorld, the only advantage is being able to do it in your inventory.

- worry point: inWorld, when you examine an item with a texture you don't have perms for, it just won't let you see the texture other than the thumbnail in the texture picker window. In this, you see the texture at full size with an obscuring cross and watermark. I imagine that might be easily hacked (not that there's any problem using GLI/OGLE to grab tetures already)

- No serach function like your regular inventory - everything is laid out like your inventory, only no search function.

I checked out the files it does save to your machine - they appear to be encoded xml files of some sort, so it's not storing textures as visible textures or anything.

And the big item:
- You can't back up multiple items - each item has to be backed up INDIVIDUALLY. GIven I have in excess of 20k of inventory (not counting the archives I've made), that's a LOT of work.

So no, this isn't a copybot - hackable I'm sure, but then so is SL in general. You should be more worried about the inWorld "Replicator" which is doing more of what copybot was feared to do - ACTUALLY impacting inWorld content developers. Copybot got stamped on pretty quickly before it could do much damage - the replicator is still running free, and there are daily laments on Designers in Seclusion about discovering yet another place selling hacked copies of someone's work.

Clearing up the questions posted earlier...

No you can not use this object as a method of gaining any permissions on anything that you did not already have them for.

Long story short: Calm the hell down, its not CopyBot

hmm. after looking at it, looks like someone has bolted a gui on top of libsecondlife... funny. :-)

about copying stuff into opensim - I suspect that it might be iffy from the licensing perspective, as the things stand up now.

The creators that would like to have the now almost empty space filled, might want to include the explicit "I allow the use of this item by its legitimate owner within opensim-based virtual worlds as well" somewhere.
