What size image do you need? XL!

Send a postcard IIIt seems Linden Labs has worked on the ‘Send a postcard’ function in the snapshot menu, where you can e-mail Second Life in-world photographs directly to someone (or to yourself) as a .jpg. Now changing the size of the snapshot actually works! I tried a snapshot up to 1024×768 pixels and that’s exactly how I got it in my e-mail inbox. Neat! No more stuck to icky low quality 640×480’s full with jaggy lines. I wonder if the same goes for the snapshot quality. Somebody tested if they fixed the ‘quality’ too?

And changing the aspect ratio (768×1024 is what I tried) works too! So you can now also ‘crop’ your photographs before posting them directly to Flickr, Snapzilla, BlogHud and the like. Neat²! (Although I think I’m still going to stick with the .bmp’s.)

Flickr problem: When submitting by email directly to Flickr, you will also upload the Second Life logo publicity thingie included in the mail.  I think you can bypass that by first submitting to BlugHud and/or Snapzilla and to let those submit the picture to Flickr.

Publish on the web

Send a postcard II wonder though, if the ‘publish on the Web’ button does something. It says ‘Selecting the Publish on Web option allows us to publish the photographer’s Second Life name, subject line, location, message ans snapshot on the Second Life website. You are responsible for indicating if any of the above content for each snapshot is considered Mature according to the Community Standards‘, but when I search ‘Community’ as well as ‘Showcase’ on SecondLife.com, neither of them shows any Second Live snapshots send directly from Second Life, only from the Flickr SL4B pool. So, if they publish those snapshots, where so?

Torley confirms

Silly me forgot to check Torley Linden’s blog on this:

Hi-rez, hi-quality Second Life postcards — they’re here!

‘Sup Second Life snapshotters! Just wanted to let you know that when sending postcards from Second Life, as of NOW, image size and image quality in the Snapshot Preview tool finally work. That’s right folks, it was buggy and busted before, but I just got word from Zen Linden… he and Jose Linden fixed it, compleat with a cleaner, simpler template, and it passed through quality assurance and went live on the main grid with Joshua Linden’s help.

Images can be up to 1 MB, so we’ll be watching that if there’s any problems. But just wanted to spread the good word; I’ve already notified several Resident admins of snapshot-showcase sites, and hope this’ll allow us to preserve our memories even bettah. I’ve been pining for it so long.

Hey Vint! Great of ya to blog this, I spotted the trackback and came right over here.

Re: “Publish on the Web” doesn’t do anything practical right now. It used to show postcards on the front page of secondlife.com, when we had a webmap before the current layout. The “Mature” flag isn’t put into use currently either, it was also used as a designator for whether piccies would appear on secondlife.com. I’ve suggested removed and/or improving them. I just made a post to the OLB with a quasi-formal announcement:

Enjoy your new XL postcards!
