SLim, a Second Life Light Instant Messaging?
August 9, 2008 1:09 amWill we soon be done bitching about how we are forced to spend 2000 euro’s on a laptop capable of running Second Life (and the whole CS3 suite at the same time ;))? No more to much MB’s client updates? Tateru Nino over at Massively reports on a new trademark application by Linden Lab:
IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: Instant messaging software; communications software for electronically exchanging voice, data, and graphics accessible via computer, mobile, wireless, and telecommunication networks; computer software for processing images, graphics, audio, video, and text; computer software for video and audio conferencing; file sharing software.
IC 038. US 100 101 104. G & S: Electronic and digital transmission of voice, data, images, signals, and messages; e-mail and instant messaging services; communications by computer terminals; electronic exchange of voice, data, and graphics accessible via computer, mobile, wireless, and telecommunication networks; voice over IP (VoIP) services; video and audio conferencing services conducted via the Internet, telephone, and mobile devices.
“SLim” with “SL” in upper case as an abbreviation for Second Life, and “im” in lower case as an abbreviation for instant messaging.
SLim definitely sounds like it could be a lightweight client for Second Life Instant Messaging! ;) Hamlet Au does point out that this might just be Lindens making sure they have a name and patent, just in case - and before somebody else does so: as with any company’s patent filing, caveats are in order– corporations often file patents and trademarks as a way of preemptively staking out territory, even if they don’t ultimately use them. For now, my best bet for getting Second Life communications on my iPhone is Katherine Berry’s AjaxLife?

Just thinking, might also be a smart move from Lindens, to take more distance from the connotation that comes with ‘Second Life’:
Have you downloaded SLim already?
What’s that?
Oh, a 3D instant message client & filesharing system. Really slick! Based on the old Second Life, but better!
Making Second Life more portable is fantastic for convenience and getting connected without being “tethered” to a desk — I’m in the process of using a different sort of “lite” client/viewer, the Second Life-Vollee one on mobile smartphones/handsets. Work in-progress on an iPhone version, see http://vollee.com/secondlife for more info and check out the forums.
Cute logo.
