SLprofiles Photography Meeting

March 11, 2007 3:53 am

Yesterday the inaugural Meeting of the Photography Forum Group for anyone & everyone wanting to share, learn & discuss photo issues in Second Life took place.

In the beginning, it was all Chaos, but Order arrived quickly when Kimo Paklena decided to moderate. We had a long discussion about the pro’s and con’s of the N30 as well as the photosphere and Jaxi - who was that kind to host the meeting - graciously allowed everyone to try out hers. And yes, a photosphere rezzed at 4.0 times it’s standard size looks impressive. For the ones wondering about prims, the N30 is 61 prims (without camera & sitting thingie), from the photosphere I only know it’s low-prim (10 prims exactly, thank you ‘Kota).

That my blur tutorial is somewhat not that obvious for beginning Photoshop addicts is something that Lena pointed out to me and Dove Swanson needed an quick explenation about the use of layer masks to mask out hair. For some more impressive Second Life photography post-procession/retouch work, see the SL Retouched Flickr Group.

Two other subjects that got a lot of attention were lighting devices (objects, chin lights, studio lighting) and pose stands (do they come with poses? how do I add poses?).

‘A monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type or create a particular chosen text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare’ or the Infinite Monkey theorem was something I pointed out to Carmilla Mirabeau as I strongly feel one should first know the basics of photoshop before one uses +20 layers. It’s about having an end result in mind and knowing how to get there, in stead of just clicking and clicking and clicking until you get something that you - more or less - like. The best book to learn the basics and actually grasp what a digital photograph and it’s colors are all about it Photoshop CS Artistry. Start with that book and there’s no possibility of getting lost anymore when you’re further unto your journey in the amazing world of Photoshop. ;)

Some other people present: Moriah Cosmos (Thank you for telling me where you’ve gotten that beautiful top and for handing out the personal lights.), DrErnie Vavoom, Mecca Merosi, … . If I forgot to put you in this list, do protest! ;)

A great first meeting, and something that’s definitely worth repeating.

And if you are in my friends list - or if you aren’t in there yet, but believe you should be - and you want to try out the N30, let me know in-world. It’s in my skybox, so you need me to TP you in.

Sounds like you guys had fun! I had planned on being there but got bussy doing other stuff. My loss so it seems. I’ll give it another go next time.
