Surfing, Surfline, SLSA and Havok 4
April 6, 2008 2:46 pm
Unsurprisingly, the Havok4 update LL pushed out yesterday has caused a bit of a problem with some of the boards and waves. We unfortunately didn’t anticipate Linden Labs pushing out the Havok4 release with a significant number of bugs still open and on short notice.
Sure they will… Who cares there are still tons of JIRA issues open that say ‘you will break our stuff when you release it!’ But Gweneth and Kalani managed this well. The SLSA surfing competition with 4 especially create surfing sims could continue. If not… for a grid lock down. Trouble with the Second Life’s ISPs network forced Linden Lab to keep the grid - or at least it’s residents - offline for more than 4 hours. Don’t they have a Plan B?! Anyway, the Surfline Competition got postponed and hopes are high we find a new arrangement that suits all.
If ‘extraordinarily prolonged and unusual disruptions‘ like this keeps happening, how does Linden Lab expect Second Life to ever be taken seriously? Imagine the Oscars ‘re-enacted’ in SL 2 pm - except if the grid is down, then we do it a day later at 4pm? Openings hours of Dell shops in second life being 9am-5pm, except if transactions are impossible during those hours, then we’ll stay open longer? Visit Mr. Harry Potter’s newest book in-world and live his adventures. Except if all our work disappears because of roll backs and overall grid problems, then you’ll just have to go and buy the book. Etc. Yikes!
Below the rest of Miss Heather Goodliffe’s message concerning the SSI waves:
Surfers!
We will be working over the next few weeks to resolve these issues as best we can as well as encouraging LL to fix them from their end. Many of the bugs seen with the waves are already known bugs in JIRA.
Any bugs/issues you see, please see if you can find them on JIRA and add your votes to increase their priority with LL. If you can’t find them in JIRA, please submit them to ssi.help@gmail.com, we will aggregate them and post them on JIRA. Once they’re posted we will likely send out another notice to request votes on the issue from people affected.
For now, please vote for the following issues:
- Boats Lower in Water in the Havok 4 Sims
- In Havok 4 server 1.20 (maingrid): physical hover height is lower than in Havok 1
- Energy constraints are wildly different in Havok 4
- (Havok 4) llPushObject applied to avatars is inconsistent
- Temp prims are erroneously counting against sim total prim count
Once we get a sense of what LL is planning to fix and what they are not, we will see what we can do as far as providing updates for any major un-resolved issues.
Thanks for all your support in this.
Hope to see you on the waves!

H4 is causing no end of problems for car scripters too, the new physics settings are a nightmare and plenty of cars don’t work…
I’ll have to go through my virtual garage and check them all…
