Or “how crashes & bugs can sometimes be incredibly enjoyable and enrich your virtual life“. This one might not look so impressive, but it really really really was kewl to have happening. (And totally my own fault, as I was teleporting around on the grid whilst they were still working on it.)

(watch on Flickr)

What was your best “bug encounter” or most memorable crash ever? (faking it does not count! ;))

When we had our photo studio on Sanctuary Rock and they were beta testing HAvok 4, it had some strange physics problems. We were having a party and folks were dancing and all of a sudden the floor starting tilting. It slowly tilted to the right until it was 90 degrees from its original position. People slid off the floor into the ocean except those who were on couple’s dance balls which stayed in sync with the floor. Then the floor shot up into the air through the roof, into the sky and then crashed back down with a bang and bounced a few times. An actual sim-quake. We moved the next day.

Haha, I love some of SL’s bugs. ^_^

Also, Cajsa, are you serious? That is one freakinly awesome bug. :D

Sometime early in 2007 probably, good friend and mentor Veronica was flying a couple of us around in one of her vehicles, bravely crossing sim boundaries at speed, when I found myself in the Void for the first time. We all know the Void, usually at (0,0,0) but sometimes somewhere else, where you find yourself sitting when a sit or a standup or a sim crossing goes horribly wrong, in either empty space, or seabottom, or surrounded by a clutter of odd objects that are perhaps similarly lost.

But this particular instance of the Void was almost entirely dark, except for an intense red horizon, and a pretty woman dressed in red dancing in the air. I of course couldn’t move. When I IM’d her to ask her what she was doing there, she said that she was with some friends dancing in a danceclub, and had no idea what I was talking about.

So that’s one of my fonder bug-memories: sitting in the dark Void, looking at the red horizon and the pretty dancing ghost, wondering if the world was going to return sometime…

Yes, when Havok 4 was in beta it was bizarre. We had to make the floors 4 m thick so we did not fall through them. It was something to do with building over water instead of land.

My weirdest experience happened with a good friend, Alma Fushikizoh at the beginning of 07.

She was flying me across the Mainland in her helicopter when we hit *something* (sim boundary? something else?) - and I crashed. She carried on flying - with a “copy” of my avatar still sitting beside her.

And the avatar wasn’t a product of the log-off update delay. It was still there AFTER I had logged back on at home and had IM’d her….she even had time to cam out of her helicopter and take a snapshot of “me” “sitting” beside her, and sent it to me as I stood in my house on a private island sim worlds away from the mainland!

The other me finally vanished as she landed the helicopter at her home….again about some 2-3 minutes after I’d logged back on, so the “other” me was there for about 5 minutes (including my crash log-out time & a short wait to miss the “5 minute ban” when relogging).

While I’ve not looked for it since that time. I think I still have the picture Alma sent….

No one believes this story, but I did get air-dropped naked onto a newbie island once. This was during the major server meltdowns that were happening in the summer of 07 I believe. Whatever my home position was, had got lost, or deleted or something, and I managed to log off the night before in flagrante delicato, as you might say… which resulted a kind of default dump of naked Kanomi onto a newbie island.

Fortunately I saw where I was and tp-ed out quickly before I rezzed for anyone.

Once I lost an airplane at a sim crossing. My avatar however didn’t notice, and I flew for quite some time without a plane.. A picture is here:

This could get to be a very long comment thread. :) Speaking of crashed airplanes, I once found an airplane underwater in the void (where nothing should be able to be) off Calendon. And it was occupied!

Dale, it’s quite possible that I was the pilot. The plane is definitely a Nieuport 17, like the one I own:

..and the picture I linked to above was also taken over Caledon. I flew that plane quite a lot of Caledon, but I can’t remember talking to you though :)

Kanomi, I believe you, really! Err… . ;)

Oh yes, the good old “void” where you could end up when even a single “sit” goes wrong. I must say, I’ve never encountered massively interesting stuff there, no sunken ships, although it’s probably the “bermuda triangle” of a sim? :d The sight was indeed sometimes fascinating, but I never snapshotted it, I believe, being to busy being frustrated over ending up there.

I have no bad experiences with airplanes inSL, but then again.. I don’t believe I have any experiences with airplanes in Second Life at all. :)

Inara’s ghost storie is a bit scary… something to tell with midnight settings, a campfire and a facelight! ;))

haha ghost stories. I was a walking-around ghost once! I was following a friend somewhere using my auto-follow attachment (it makes your AV stay within a certain distance of someone else, to make it easier to talk etc when following someone), when I crashed. When I logged back in I was somewhere quite a ways from where I had been when I crashed; she said that I’d been following silently after her for some time (rather creepily I imagine!) after the last thing I said before crashing. Scary!

I had some strange things occurring with my old home which consisted of 2 pieces of land, each on a different sim. Usually walking from one side to the other involved walking up in the air or in the ground. I had some quicksand warnings put up :)
My partner swears he once encountered a huge swastika while walking into the ground. He im-ed me about it at that time while I saw him disappearing into the ground. It was not a flash but he saw it for a minute or so. After that we have tried to find the swastika underground but of course we never found it.

And there was this other time when the 2nd part of land seemed to have dissappeared, there was only end of sim ocean. Tp-ing to the other piece of land was possible and there you could see the 1st part but you couldn’t walk of fly overthere.
