Lately more and more pictures of the Greenies started to reappear on Flickr, bloghud and the SL Blogs. Now these incredible cute well done and cute sculptures by LightWaves have finally found a home at the Rezzable Productions’ Greenies Home. Something I didn’t expect to see when months ago I saw sitting a green alien on a heep of DVD’s next to RightasRain in a Sandbox.
Two sims make a huge area for these little green ones - and the Second Life residents - to play, explore and even act a little bit mischievious. With the slogan ‘Join us! Green the Grid!’ Rezzable plans on letting them - as any self respective alien would do - invade Second Life. About the Greenies’ Home Rezzable says:
The Greenies are on the Grid! They are somewhat lost in SL, but forgot to try to find their way home. Just some kooky little aliens, enjoying whatever they discover in the metaverse.
The Greenies Home was based on the work of one of SL’s most talented and prolific artist, Lightwaves. Rezzable Productions has taken the initial ideas of the Greenies and developed this exciting, top-quality entertainment area.
The Greenies home is good fun, built to maximize the SL user experience. We have focused on exploration, fun activities and giving SL residents plenty of room to goof around!
Pavig Lok on the Greenies and (not) Starax
For this project LightWaves - which October Hush thinks to be Kisa Naumova, and about which RightAsRain Rimbaud says ‘Light Waves is Light Waves’ - created lots of new amazing Greenies sculptures, which are joined by the Greenie avatars, of which one is my ‘photographer Greenie’ avie. Ow, and Greenie merchandise. And some other Greenie stuff. :p Pavig Lok, LittleToe Bartlett and team did a great job on building the sim - whatever certain people may say, and they explain the build wonderfully in the comments of the ‘Let’s get Small - and Greenie’ article over at the SLHerald.
Unfortunately little of that or many of the great builds of SL survive any more except for in pieces in some peoples pockets. It turned out that there was a surviving copy of a giant dollhouse by starax at that scale, which we considered putting in, but when we looked it dwarfed the rest of the sim and looked very wrong. Instead we rebuilt the original prim by prim(with a few tweaks) at our scale as a cultural reference to SL art history. Oldbies have identified it as such and got the reference. It’s been fun to note that the “crappy house” people have been describing is a copy of the kind of art that was once the pinnacle of the sl experience. Not a great deal has changed since then, imagination is still the most important tool, but the toolbox techniques of the sl artist has grown substantially.
Hopefully the existence of greenies home will give SL artists who have so much to give, the inspiration to stick at it. If the corporate world realizes that it has much to gain from acting as a benefactor to SL’s strengths and community rather than treating it like other media, we may see more sponsorship of projects such as this. Surely that’s a better marketing strategy than making a sim so dull you have to pay people to be there.
Visit the Greenies!
If you want to learn more, the Things To Do group is visiting the Greenies Home together with Rezzable Productions owner RightasRain Rimbaud at 1 pm SLT/PST, 9 pm GMT today. Just use this SLURL to the Greenies’ Home.
Because of the Greenies Home being huge, Rezzable gives some advice on the draw distance settings for your client:
You’ll fine the scale of things here somewhat outside your usual SL experience, so you’ll need to set draw distance to a high value (300 meters plus!). To do this:
1) open preferences. ( [Ctrl-P] or “Preferences” under the Edit menu)
2) click on the “graphics” tab on the left of the preferences panel.
3) find the draw distance box and type in a number between 300 and 512 (bigger is better but might be slower on older computers)
4) hit enter or click ok.
If you have a slow computer or connection you might want to set draw distance back down before you leave this sim as it can create lag in busy areas (like malls).
