Things I think Second Life lacks

March 1, 2007 1:36 am

One day or another, everybody needs a blog post like this. It could be very well possible that there is already a way to do these things, but I didn’t figure out how yet. Do tell me if that’s the case. ;)

  1. The ability to highlight keywords in main chat. With good old mIRC there was the possibility to let certain words be highlighted and to get a sound notification when they were used in main/room chat. For instance, if I highlight ‘Vint’ and somebody mentions my name in the general chat, it would be in sparkling red so I don’t miss it, like I usually do. :D
  2. A ‘mark as unseen’ option for objects, notecards, landmarks, … you receive. When you receive something, you have the option to keep or discard. I would add a checkbox in that panel that lets you mark these objects as ‘unseen at’. In your inventory next to the objects the same checkbox option would be available. That way you can easily mark the things you need to take a look at later, when you have more time. A simple ’show only unseen items’ option in the inventory would show you all of them. I know I can go into my inventory after receiving them and put them in a separate folder, but that’s just to much trouble. Please implement, so I won’t have any unpacked new clothes that I forget to wear in my inventory!
  3. A ‘Warning! Laggy!’ before TP. I realize officially, there’s probably no such things as ‘lag’. But sometimes, on *coughs* rather rare *coughs* occasions, it does happen. It would be great if the client could somehow warn you before teleporting to extreme busy places with huge tons of lag. “The place you want to visit is rather crowed and doesn’t run completely up to speed, do you still want to go?”
  4. Download / Upload figures. When checked, it shows you your Second Life data traffic in the SL taskbar. How much bytes kilobytes megabiytes gigabytes have you already downloaded and uploaded in total, in this session and the average per hour estimated if you look at the data traffic of the last 10 minutes. I know I can easily monitor that outside the client. If the SL client wasn’t that egocentric to eat the whole of my CPU and RAM on it’s own and would leave some for other programs, I’d probably do so.
  5. Give me the possibility to offer a non-friend a TP back! You don’t offer friendship to every hitchhiker you take along, do you? Or to every handyman that comes to your house to do some chores?

ad 1: that would be great, very often people talk to me or make jokes about me in the main chat and while i am busy in the IM
ad 2: you can still see by the color of Landmarks light / dark red that it is used or not used
ad 3: it would be also nice to get a warning if there are enemies of you before tping :-)
ad 4: that is not interesting for me, but i try to imagine the facial expression of an egocentric SL client :-P
ad 5: isn“t it possible to tp not-friends? maybe via profile?!
i cant try it yet, cause i am at work and i dont use sl here
point 6 could be: copy and paste urls for example from external programms in the IM and main chat and backwards

c u soon, in sl

Yes but what works for landmarks doesn’t work for clothing bags/boxes. :D

Scan to see who’s there would be fun, but will never be allowed I think because it would become (more) easy to locate someone who doesn’t want to be seen. (Just scan the whole of the SL grid. ;))

Nope, TP to non-friends via profile is not possible anymore.

Your point six, can’t that be done by selecting them and then press ctrl+c? (And press ctrl+v where you want them copied.) I remember copying part of an IM conversation that way recently.

All very good points!!!! I’ve only been on SL for a week, but I agree completely. (And if someone who is just starting SL notices those things you’ve mentioned, it should be pretty obvious to LL they need to implement those minor changes already!)

I also think you should be able to set your ‘home’ landmark to whereever you’d like, instead of having to own a home or having to set it to an info hub. I have mine set to start up in the last location, and usually try to find a quiet spot to log out before I shut SL down, but if you happen to *cough* crash in a busy location with too much lag, and want to continue SL, you get tp’d right back the congestion.

And I think it would be nice to be able to click on and activate things while in mouselook, but maybe that is possible and I just don’t know how to yet?

Maybe. Although they would make sure you have the land owner/renter’s approval to do that first. I’ve set mine that way too. Because if I normally log of it’s either in my home or at a place I don’t mind relogging. It’s handy if I crash and I log in again, I’m at the place where I crashed. Saves me a TP. ;)

Mouselook click on thingie: Not that I know off. On the other hand, drop the mouselook (it’s only good for moving the sun) and use ctrl+0 to zoom in more. Ctrl+9 gets you back to the default zoom lvl. And somewhere in the preferences (I thought, it could be client menu too though) you can change the distance within which you can click objects.

Excellent tip on zooming!! I can’t believe how well that works.

Don’t suppose you know a way to make the landmarks in my inventory section match the landmarks that show up in the map section? I have my landmarks renamed and organized in my inventory, but if I have the map open and want to use one of the landmarks from there, a super long cluttered mess of landmarks (most I never even set as landmarks) shows up and I can’t figure out how to delete or rename them there!

Otherwise, I’m going to have to add that to my list of pet peeves.

P.S. - Excellent site, Vint! I cannot believe how much effort goes into your SL photography shoots!! Though I suppose that explains how you get such tremendous results. Well done!
