Thoughts on Flickr Views

March 19, 2007 6:41 pm

Why do some SecondLife snapshots/photographs get over 2k of views on Flickr and some end up having only twelve? Are they really that bad? No! Just look at Phinn Boffin’s awesome picture ‘Angel‘. This awesome photograph has had only 31 views in more then four months time. Yes, the Flickr Universe is that injust! ;)

Pole DancingFlickr has invented a horrible punishment called ‘Not In Public Site Areas‘, or shortly put: NIPSA. They reckon we are uploading ‘not photos’, ’screenshots’ and that some of us are even uploading snapshots that are ‘inappropriate for public areas’ or that ‘display full frontall nudity’. Booohooo!
Anyway, if you’ve been NIPSA’d by Flickr, there is nothing that you can do about it except complain and sob. Complain doesn’t help, not even if you have a payed account. The effect of the NIPSA/ban will be that your Flickr contacts can still see your pictures, but they will not show up on the main site and in group pools if the person viewing the photographs is not a member of that Flickr group.
Flickr staff say they are working on a ‘content filtering’ system that is high priority, but no further information about how it will work or when it will go public is released.

But let’s assume Flickr still thinks you’re a nice person and did not NIPSA you. Then this are some things I’ve discovered increase the view rate:

  • Naked Avie Flesh, preferable female. It didn’t come as a suprise to me that my two best ranking photographs contain uncovered breasts. Work well too: shiny, oiled skins and short skirts, huge minimally covered breasts and long legs.
  • If there’s one group you need to submit your pictures to it’s the Second Life Flickr group. The latest pictures from this group’s pool are shown on SecondLife.com’s media page as well as on blog.secondlife.com. That is, if you are not NIPSA’d. Do post when the grid is down as then a lot of people seem turn to clicking those pictures to get their daily dose of SecondLife. Remember that as this group pool is shown on the official SL site, you can only post PG stuff!
  • Pole DancingClose up action! Preferably an action that involves kissing and other foreplay stuff, hugging, posing really sexy, … . We are all curious about other people avies, what they do and how they feel. A photograph depecting a strong feeling of emotion, or that has an obvious sense of action in it will score better. It’s even better when the pictures is taken up close, as we are all voyeurist after all.
  • Is this possible within SL?! Bright, saturated colors, strong shadows, reflections, twin avies and images that are clearly post-processed do well too. The say bloody shots work great too.
  • Be original. Do not take photograph number 5658 that has the back of your avie in it, but hover your camera around, try some different angles, watch your composition. Take advantage of the fact that there are no limits as to where you place your camera in SL.
  • Tag your snapshots. You have a hawt lady-avie in your photograph? Well, then tag them ‘beauty’ and ’sexy’ for instance. A nice beach scene? ’sunset’, ‘beach’ and ‘romantic’ will make great tags. This way the photographs will show up when people search for those tags. And we all know what’s searched for most on the internet - besides Paris Hilton, maybe. :d Consider adding a (relevant) description too. Search engines look at that too to ‘label’ the picture.
  • Square Size 75×75 is the thumbnail format the pictures will show up in on SL’s official site. So pictures that still look interesting in that size are more likely to be clicked upon.

If you have knowledge I don’t have or totally disagree on this, feel free to comment.

This list is just about views. As for fav’s and comments I can only give you this advice: be nice, comment on other people’s pictures, join groups, take good shots, … . ;)

I don’t know if it would affect views on Flickr, but in general a “different” angel or point of view works well too. Since you can move your camera around av’s without restriction in SL there are no limits as to what you can do.

It is just not ending, hé?
The Flickr site is also one thing that you have to learn. It is not only putting and uploading your pictures, but also figuring out where to put them, which groups, how to tag them, how to comment, how to put them as a set ……
Once you figure that all out, you can easily switch through all the new uploaded pictures of your contacts and comment them.
I have noticed from new uploaders too, that it is not clear to them from the start, how to upload and manage their pictures. I receive regural some requests, how to do this, how to do that. And even I don’t know it all.
So all I wanted to say is thank you for these significant tips, I will surely keep them in mind when I post my next pictures, when my post processing is succesful, even in the details, ;D

Loki, thank you. I assumed everybody would know that, as that goes for first life photographs too, but added ‘Be original!’. ;)

Looker, what is not ending? I’ve gotten tons of those questions too and most of the time I tro to be polite and helpfull. But sometimes I just sight and type ‘RTFM!’. :D

No, Vint, what I was trying to say is, that the learning process is not ending. When we started with SL, well, that was one thing, then learning the post processing with other programs that we used to, then we had to post our pictures to “flickr”, and learn about this site, while we started SL just for the fun of it. And it still is. And worthwile too.
If we did not had blogs like this one, I can not imagine how we could learn all this on a short notice. I am grateful.;D

Many great tips in here, the tagging I haven’t given any thought yet.

Personally I have huge problems with deciding where the limits for PG and what groups to add images to. Maybe there is need of a slflickr.com, so we can share just out beautiful images.

I have seen one more think that important i think, timing, when you publish your image to the second life pool especially. If you add it to second life pool a minute before some other adds 30 boring images, you will get much less view that if you add and stay on the front row for a couple of hours.

Nadine, you are right about the timing, but I don’t see how we could control that. It’s impossible to know how many pictures will be posted after yours and when. (Except maybe for Marquez, as he’s God after all.)

The only solution to that would be to redraw your picture from the pool, and then to submit it again, but that’s not something I encourage. Besides, this would be way less fun without the ‘luck’ factor. ;)

Snapzilla is a wannabe SL-flickr, but I don’t like it. At all. :d So I just stick to complaining about Flickr and getting my hopes up high we’ll get a seperate devision, or as Torley said somewhere on the Flickr forums: ‘We just have to make sure that we’ll shoot the best screenshots!’

Uh, Vint, regarding your Be Original tip… does this mean I shouldn’t ask Zoe to get some shots from behind herself when she is holding a machine gun in each hand and wearing those leather pants?

Sometimes, seeing the avie from behind is still a good thing, right, I hope? ;-)

PS - Please feel free to skip over any pictures I might ever post, considering they likely break every guideline you suggest.

Wait a minute! OMG you wrote this article about me, didn’t you??? ack! Sorry. hehe

Wrath, I said ‘be original’. To decide what is original is up to you! ;)

I think it would look neat of you could photograph it that way that it resembles the view you had in first person shooters like quake and others. So yes, from the back with the two guns up. (The picture I have in mind would be to close to show the leather pants, but go ahead, I’ll ask her to pose for my idea later? ;))

And will it hurt your ego when I say the article isn’t completely about you? ;)

You like girls with guns? Zoe, maybe we can take him shopping with us?

I never ether liked snapzilla, I think the big difference are the lever of the images added to snapzilla and flickr. Or I’m just lucky to find good images at flickr and none at snapzilla.

Grrrls with guns :^) No that doesn’t give many views http://www.flickr.com/photos/42737673@N00/378269015/
But on the other hand that wasn’t one of my better images.
