Vint does OpenSim Machinima
January 30, 2009 9:22 amOk, I know it might not be visible, but tons of effort went into this on… first take a look - preferably high quality on YouTube (and if you’re there anyway, please favourite it or leave a sweet comment *grins*) - and then let me explain…
Shot at the Techra, PGA (OpenSim based Grid) & Crimson Shadow
“I’m going to machinima this!” was something that came up in my head all of a sudden when I noticed an extremely high frame rate on the PGA, so there I was, unprepared, with only a demo version of Fraps. Which lead to me having only 30 seconds fragments, of which some even got _lost_ somewhere on my disk. Stuff I know I shot, but can’t find anywhere. Then, next in line was Windows Moviemaker Moviebreaker. It would not allow me to edit anything longer than 90 seconds, well, I could edit it, but it would refuse to safe. So I had to make this one in 4 separate parts, and then glue them together and add the audio track. Hence, not much “alignments” between video & audio, sadly enough. There are 2 things though, that I take full blame for:
- I left the “avatar names” hoovering above the avatars. Basically, because I have no clue how to turn that off.
- I forgot to go into “full view without user interface”. Basically, because I forgot the key combination.
Ah well, next one will be better, I promise, especially if I can get my hands on a SpaceNavigator mouse thingie. ;) In the mean while, I do like the covers I did for Foolish’ “Sweet Home on the Mainland” and “Linden’s Lament” song. What you think? (If you wish to read more about the “Live in the Cornfield” show, or hear the full recording, hup over to my entry on the Rezzable Blog. *hums “Save the Drama”*)

Great vid and fun song! :-) I went to the PGA, but it was too late and it was deserted *sighs* The avie names can be turned off by Edit -> Preferences -> General, Show avatar names -> Never. The UI is turned off by Ctrl+Alt+F1, and the HUD attachments are rendered invisible by Shift+Alt+H (both key combinations are toggles). Oh, and don’t open the box of your SpaceNavigator until friday night — you won’t be able to leave your chair for several days, it’s simply orgasmic :-)
beautiful vinteo, vid!
i am using frapsdemo all the time and i recommend it to anybody who asks, and i have never lost any pieces. in fact, i like the 30sec-thing, because it helps me to find my cuts later.
besides, it is easier for moviemaker to work with the pieces if they are not too long. it would crash or create problems for me, too, sometimes.
always recommended to save “projects” often while working with this software! moviemaker is a bit like SL: free, but not too stable…
but for a non-profit-blog like mine, it’s always cool to be able to use no-budget-software.
greetings from the bus, nuschi
Excellent lyrics.
And yeah, I hate Windows Moviemaker too - it crashes every time I try to save my movie. Bah!
Fraps generally saves at c:\fraps\
Dear Vint:
Your song and machinima brings tears of joy to my eyes to as OpenSim becomes more used. Thank you, and please continue.

Thank you for the tips, Miss Zonja. As usual, what you say is very helpful. :)
For the fraps demo: yes, maybe, Nuschi, but if next time I’m going to get the HUD & UI out of the way, I don’t want the “fraps.com” text ruining my - hopefully better - machinima.
Gaynor and Charles, thank you very much, but I can’t take any credit for the song and/or lyrics. That praise should be wrapped in a beautiful gift box and sent out to Foolish Frost & Botany Black!!! You can download the song - and others - for free at the Rezzable website, if you wish to do so! =)
Kms, thanks for the suggestion, but they weren’t there (it’s indeed where I keep them.) I even search my whole pc for files larger than 10mb changed in the last 24 hours, to no avail… . I think somehow, inventory-loss must have found it’s way to real life computer technology. (Or my F12 button was stuck?!!!)
[…] favourite things (inSL)” is the Second Life live music scene. I’m also a ‘big sucker‘ for Second Life parody songs. Of course, I’m Foolish Frost’s number one fan, but […]
If you go and view Zinja’s videos you wll get a lot of ideas. She’s brilliant and I highly recommend the viewing even if it’s just for fun. I use FRAPS and works great on my system and best option is not to record audio if you can help it. Larger files and less FPS. CPU intensive although that’s to be expected. Make sure the least amount of background programs are running. Lowest draw distance you can get away with. The less avatars in your field of view the better unless you are going for a different shot. Really influences the FPS. The ide was grand and basically you are just short some tools epecially on the editing side of things I think. Sometimes I can film at 25 FPS depending on how much hair is there :-). I tell you though that image of you on the keyboards for the graphic is a work of Art. That looks like a record cover that should be on the front of the Rolling Stone. It’s brilliant.
cheers
